Tileset project

New ones: Skeleton, Mildly fleshed Skeleton, Zombie Scientist, Zombie Cop (riot)

EDIT: Forgot the image.

Swimmer Zombies?

Also, npc in the .json have different id for male and female, so you can make 2 sprites

Oh, great, I had assumed they wouldn’t.

I’ll probably largely leave NPC and mobs to you guys and work on terrain and objects.

Well, i made a Cougar, a Rat, a Wolf, and a Deer. My favorite is the deer. I like it.

http://www.wiki.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?title=Tileset_Support Just in case it’s needed.

Is the Google docs updated constantly? I wanna make sure I don’t make a sprite thats already made.

Anyways,
Chicken Walker & Mom? http://imgur.com/adarzH5,Z7lu1hD

Baseball Bat, Hatchet, Nail bat http://imgur.com/BprzTJx,h4f2Qy3,0pbT7I4

Wow they look great!

From its description the chicken walker look more like Star Wars’ AT-ST. I think you can put all of those others in.

Not a big fan of your walking cane either, look a big think and short. But that amigara horror is amazing.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that the walking cane is a bit funky, Ill fix that. As for the chicken walker, I’ll look into the AT-ST and try to replicate it in a cataclysm way. If that makes sense.

Edit: Better Walking Cane http://imgur.com/MYpYFVh Also, couldn’t really make a AT-ST that well, so Im keeping the chicken walker as is. But If someone makes a better chicken walker, they can replace the current one.

Edit: Edit: Are foods gonna have sprites too? Like Cola and water? If so, Ill get working on those right away.

Liked them, really. What is an Amigara Horror? Never seen it.

Uh, and also… maybe it woulb be better having the Mother having the same style as the player… but if you guys want lets stay it as it is.

Define “same style as the player” Like, an @ Symbol?

That naked dudes there.

Oh yeah, that’d be wise actually! Ill leave the Mom? to you then!

Also, here are some food sprites!

Right now for furnitures if they are made as a single width piece horizonally or vertically they will pull from the end-piece and edge multitile ids if available. So you’d need to make them backless so they will rotate seamlessly to match up with each other.

e : end-piece
E : edge

Horizontal:
eEe eE...Ee

Vertical:
e e
E E
e ...
    E

I was directed over here from my vehicle tileset support thread, and now I really wish I’d known about this thread yesterday.

I’ve been obsessively grinding out a tileset since I downloaded the new tile support version yesterday afternoon, can’t stand those Pink ?s everywhere

I’ve roughed out some vehicle tiles, walls, building elements, some misc environment effects… and placeholder-ed all the monsters to an assigned index to get rid of the obnoxious pink “?”.

Now I see all the cool kids are working in 15^2, and you guys have been creating tiles for weeks… Le sigh…

Now I have some questions on how the group effort is going along. Is there a generic JSON with standardized indexes applied? Is there a community tileset yet? Or has the effort been directed to raw art assets, and I’m jumping the gun on “is it ready yet”?

I’m starting to run into questions on how the JSON side of things work and am wondering if there is some expertise available to answer my questions.

I’m finding some mismatched monsters, the Zombie Dog isn’t in the Json file, but appears to use the Zombie Brute entry, and the Swimmer (also not there) uses the “Fast Zombie” image. Am I missing how these associate together?

And I saw a comment from Galen on items needing to be added to the Json, that’s another missing link for me… I’d really like to make the simple rock not be a question mark and can’t find an existing entry to work with. Assuming it needs to be added, what is the procedure for adding an item?

Issue: Is it worth having different sprites for spilled liquids?

Ah, I see what you’re saying. To be honest, I think that would be worth it, since were in no rush. Might aswell make some sprites for the spilled liquids too!

Dudes… no one answered his doubts.

Well… lets go for parts.

Now I have some questions on how the group effort is going along. Is there a generic JSON with standardized indexes applied?

We have Sheb, who wants to do this. But we are adding tiles all the time, so there will be a lot of versions. But for now, no .json yet. But maybe tomorrow. I don’t want to rush him, because he wants to do it and telling him to hurry will only be bad.
If you are reading this, Sheb, no rush! We still have lots of work ahead.

Is there a community tileset yet?

I think this will be the first of this size. Having so many contributors is entertaining and refreshing. So many styles!

Or has the effort been directed to raw art assets, and I’m jumping the gun on “is it ready yet”?

It will probably be never ready, because they are always adding content to the game. But it can be actually played… like the tileset it comes with the sdl for now. Kinda the same, they have just the basics for now. But we have more tiles, we just need to assemble them. This will be made lots of times. Updates every weeks or days.

I’m finding some mismatched monsters, the Zombie Dog isn’t in the Json file, but appears to use the Zombie Brute entry, and the Swimmer (also not there) uses the “Fast Zombie” image. Am I missing how these associate together?

Weird. I don’t actually entered any .json, so i don’t know. Probably a bug, or maybe it was made like that to put the zombie dog a tile in the sdl tileset.

And I saw a comment from Galen on items needing to be added to the Json, that’s another missing link for me… I’d really like to make the simple rock not be a question mark and can’t find an existing entry to work with. Assuming it needs to be added, what is the procedure for adding an item?

Really out of my league. But he can help you.

Sheb asked me about an easy way to get the item definitions in. I don’t really have one, but can post up a template json later tonight that has all of the definitions for all current items added to the hardcoded definitions. As far as mismatched hardcoded things, I need to update the template to fix some issues from added hardcoded items in weird locations.

Sounds good, I’m looking forward to seeing how this matures.

In the mean time, here are the results of my efforts so far (16x16, I’ve been extending off the stock example).

I have a complete set of vehicle tiles, most of the walls/fences (have strangeness at corners, not sure if its the engine or my definitions), placeholders for all the monsters. and some ground/water/environment stuff (basically whatever I could find that bugged me as I walked around).

Not a high quality set by any means, I’m mainly trying to get a playable tileset going for the new version. Looking forward to getting some defaults going for the various items, the pink ? is a huge immersion breaker for me.

tile_config.json (61.7 KB)

A tileset would be complete if a feature that if a specific item doesnt have a tile associated to it the game could use a general tile for the item category. Like a tile that could represent all the riffles or swords if there is no tile for the specifoc item. Its way better than a pink question mark :stuck_out_tongue: That way items could be added to the game and still have a tile representing them until a tile is drawn for the said item. Im sure it can be done.
