As for ways to keep your face warm could be cobble together a ski mask? Not a perfect solution (as people stare when you enter a store) but they are plenty helpful when the weather is around -40C.
Ski mask is a good suggestion, I will add it. It will be a step up from bandana.
Some weird stuff.
I slept with too many layers on (torso and face) and woke hot and hungry but slaked. After that it also made consuming any comestibles, even first aid kits, give the message “you can’t finish it all.” I quit, reloaded, and tried again. Going to sleep at Comfortable didn’t cause this to happen, so I assume it’s temp related.
I should probably also add a “too hot” to sleeping to avoid the player dying of thirst. I assume what happened is you got so thirsty the number wrapped around or something. Good catch!
yeah, a few more protective items (singular) would help, like the ski mask for face, ski goggles for eyes (dunno of those are already in, never found any) etc etc. maybe a set of winter pants? again, i’ve only ever found leather, army, cargo and jeans.
Ski goggles have been around but are pretty much a sporting-goods exclusive. Pretty much a combination of sun & safety glasses IIRC.
Clarification request: I’m thinking of the ski mask as a fabric helmet-type thing that one pulls over one’s entire head. 1) is that accurate, 2) if so, does the proposed ski mask have a mouth opening, or is it more of a balaclava? (That affects environmental protection, etc.)
could we have the 2 variants?
Ski mask - mouth open
Balaclava - mouth covered?
Clearly the balaclava would be preferable over the ski mask, unless the ski mask had more warmth overall than the balaclava did?
or just make the bala more rare.
and I guess i’ve never found ski goggles…do they provide warmth? (i’m assuming they would, if just a bit)
I think I’ll make make the balclava a better version of the ski mask, but the ski mask will be craftable. They will cover the head/face, but ski mask will be less warmth, or it will be the same warmth but with 1 encumberance.
Eyes do not have a body temperature, so ski goggles do nothing.
I thought i’ve had frostbite on my eyes…nvm, i’m retarded.
but i’m okay with having to find a balaclava and only being able to make a ski mask.
I was working on the wiki last night/this morning and saw an entry for balaclavas under the Clothing/Helmet section.
http://www.wiki.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?title=Clothing#balaclava
Not sure if that’s a placeholder or if they already exist.
They exist, but I also realized I don’t know how to spell Balaclava. I always spelled it Balclava. I hope it is spawning correctly!
Also, I woud have my work pushed to git by now, but git is being finnicky and I don’t know how it works. Hopefully I can get my changes in before 0.5 :x
I’m reliably certain I corrected the spelling of balaclava ingame, and they do spawn, I saw one on Jef’s stream a while back.
I didn’t double check my balaclava changes, but I finally got my git in order and pushed new items and crafting recipes to git I still have to add the ski mask too. And whatever else I said I would do.
It’s 50 degrees out where I live. If my house had no heating and I was wearing this much clothing (and I was in a bed no less) I would literally die of heat. I have taken over 200 Nyquil pills, and still can’t sleep. If I had taken that many, I would not only die of overdose, but also from absolute sleep deprivation.
Fifty degrees is not “extreme temperature”. Please get a perspective.

this is a WIP, please be more considerate? You’re not entitled to anything you know.
on topic: Where was the balaclava found? I rewatched jef’s LP but couldn’t find it, do they only spawn in sporting goods?
I just feel like a lot of criticism isn’t really met well. I get that the devs have lives and this isn’t at all a full-time project, but the point is that 50 degrees is not too cold to sleep in a bed. Shoes has said this, I have said this, and it remains a thing that happens. I’d love to dive in the code and do it myself, but… I’m not a coder.
I just request there are more options, and more /logical/ ways of getting warm.
I personally think that temperature has become a lot better in the
current 0.4 version. I have played it a lot, and I am “Comfortable” most of the time, if i dress correctly
I dont even have to overdress (much) to archieve this…
In the earlier version it was very odd and nearly unplayable at times, but IMO it has become at lot better, and is totally playable now with regards to temperature.
That said; I am not against some of the suggestions here, I just want to give credit, where credit is due.
In a project like this, all you can hope for ( as a non contributer) is progress, and we are seing that.
Its happening rather fast, and there are tons of awesome changes all the time…

Thank you for the screen shots; I can see from them that you are playing an outdated version of the game. Perhaps it is the latest you can download, but the problems you are having have already been addressed.
As Kaliffen said, it is much playable in the recent versions. Take a look at a few pages back, I posted some screenshots of those changes.
I just downloaded 0.4 (I was playing a pre-release accidentally) and temperature seems much better. Thank you, and sorry for that ignorance.
I will report on any bugs in the recent version however.
I look forward to them! The next update will really just have new items to facilitate fighting the cold. I may have time to tinker with numbers a bit too.
I know parts of this have already been mentioned in other parts of the forums but I would like to bring up here that:
A) The furred and lightly furred traits do not add any warmth to your body at all. (Defiantly been said before)
B) You can’t put any clothing on talons and hoofs. (Defiantly been said before)
C) Fire dosn’t keep you warm enough during the winter months, even if your beside it with it in a brazier or wood stove. (Don’t know if it’s been said before)
Basically I’ve reached winter and it’s regularly -10°C or so. I can’t wear gloves or socks, but on the parts of my body I can wear items, they are warm. But now I have to deal with constant spam about how frostbite has frozen my hands and feet off, but they never actually even fall off. So this is annoying, basically either they should rot away or stop spamming my screen with messages about them freezing solid and feeling numb. It’s annoying.
It’s like the game is expecting me to like care or something about my virtual hands and feet falling off or whatever but it never actually goes through with anything so I coudln’t care less. I just want the spam to stop.
support for mutations is needed…talons aren’t looked at with much love by the temperature system.
also, MOUTH temps. any way to add resistance to certain parts of the body? mouth encumbrance is something I constantly try and mitigate but I get frostbit at 40 degrees within minutes of removing my mask. didn’t know if this is working as intended but melee with a gasmask is terrible, but so is frostbite.
