Temperature effects are way to ridiculous

[hotheaded, irritated rant at Shoes removed]

Keep up the good work, we’re all behind you.

Seriously, after thinking about thermodynamics models for a while, I concluded that you are either very brave or very insane to try to get this working. Hurts my head to read through the temperature code.

Updated yesterday and have survived to day 3 or 4 so far and I think I’ve been cold all of once in that time… and that’s my fault because I was out in the rain.

I would be happy to shed some light on it if you have questions!

Yaaaay  Some games I find run colder than others; sometimes temps stay in the 60s, other times they are low 50s. Hopefully you’re managing even on the lower end :3

I don’t have a clue about Fahrenheit since I’m european, but 20 degrees celsius is not cold. Still, thank heavens the game DOES support celsius and metric system because otherwise I probably wouldn’t be playing it.

Yeah, I am not too familiar with F either. My sources (cited earlier somewhere) state that a lightly clothed person is comfortable in 25C temperature. So if you are not wearing enough, yes, 20C is cold. Keep in mind that “activity” like reading or crafting or fighting don’t affect body temperature yet. Also, being cold has no penalties for most body parts; it’s just a warning that you may run into colder temps still.

Well it seems that one of the current problems is that enough overlaps with way too frigging much.

20C in real life I would probably be out completely naked(if I could) or as minimal clothing as I can get away with. 25C I nearly melt (and I assure you it is most definitely not comfortable) under just a light t shirt and shorts. Hell 15 C I’d wear about half the usual clothes (T shirt, and jeans, single pair of socks and maybe a light coat as opposed to t-shirt, light jumper, heavy coat, two pairs of socks [at about 7-12 C approx, I wear way more at negative temps].

i just died from being so cold even while wearing a fur coat a scarf wool gloves a raincoat and army pants.

There’s a random death in sleep bug, which some people have come across. Not sure if it’s actually to do with cold (in fact I think shoes made it so that cold couldn’t kill you in this version).

By the way, Shoes:

Any idea why I’m waking up cold here? I’m full, slaked, and wearing adequate protection, so the only thing I can think of is that I’m sleeping on roll-mat, which isn’t ideal for warmth. Does that check out?

EDIT:

Happened again. Also on a roll mat.

I think the chance of waking up from cold is too high when sleeping; I will tweak that a bit. Also, I haven’t found a way to let the player know they will be too cold while sleeping, so when they are awoken, the @ menu still shows “okay” temps.

Do you mean that excess cold led to your death? Because you can’t die from cold. Care to provide some more details?

edit: was playing a latest git pull, and things are looking dire; body temperature is low because wolves mauled me and I am having a hard time keeping warm. I worked my tailoring up to level 3, and to my dismay, there was nothing to craft to keep my face and head warm using just rags! I am going to add those items in.

Speaking of which, is there -anything- you can use to warm your face? I’m currently sitting in my shelter, looking like the furriest yak you’ve ever seen, and my face is still freezing. (Everything else is nice and snuggly, though)

Bandanas, gas mask(I think), scarves.

I am fine near 0 degrees C in a swea5er and cargoes, but absolutely hate warm to hot weather. This has probably been suggested but I would suggest tempurature preferences and tolerations to the traits at character creation.

There’s not enough in the game to keep your face warm. The trenchcoat ought to give you some minor face warmth (pop that collar).

Can we possibly make it so that beds provide a static bonus to warmth (maybe +20) for all body parts? I mean, I’m assuming beds come with blankets. If not… add blankets.

Hell, add sleeping bags too for outdoor sleeping warmth.

Clothes really should be more about keeping you warm while outdoors. As long as you have a blanket/sleeping bag you should be able to handle not having a scarf or gloves on when sleeping.

latest character slept with:

[ul][li]Winter Gloves[/li]
[li]Sweater[/li]
[li]Jeans[/li]
[li]Scarf[/li]
[li]Wool Hat[/li][/ul]

These are in addition to my roaming clothes: Hoodie, T-shirt, cargo pants, sneakers, socks, finger-less gloves.

5 items I keep in a pile next to my bedroll and are a jiffy 15 sec put on/take off regime when it’s sleep time! keeps me comfortable all the way into winter (much needed triple/quadruple layering then) at around 40F/4C

newest .exe release, working as intended!

Beds only add a warmth bonus while sleeping. I never considered the player wanting to sit in a bed under the blankets.

I am adding 6~ or so “full body” clothing items, like cloaks and sleeping bags and blankets. I will also add more crafting recipes for these, and maybe have some “awesome” tailor/survival stuff, like fur trenchcoats at no extra encumbrance, but you can only craft them, not find them.

The system doesn’t allow “partial” warmth to body parts, so I can’t have a trench coat collar keep the face warm without getting the full trench coat warmth value. That’s why a hoodie also doesn’t provide head warmth…

For keeping the face warm, there’s really only the dust mask, bandana, scarf, filter mask and gas mask. Bandana is now craftable at level 0 or 1 I think. Perhaps I should add a turtle neck sweater!

Cloak + Platemail + Broadsword = ultimate win

Thank you sir, you are amazing! now my knight can truly die kill in style!

Personally my character always “sits” on his bedroll to read or perform other mundane tasks while i’m stuck inside. it’s a point of immersion for me so being able to do so without all of my sleeping gear on would be nice.

I’ll look into it. My first thought was picturing a player scrambling away from zombies by climbing onto a bed, into the covers, and then out again. But the amount of bonus warmth you would get for being on a bed for one tick would be quite negligable.

Could you make a timed effect? You only get the bed’s warmth after 5 turns on the same spot, or something?

That would stop the weirdness of a player getting snuggling the duvet whilst fighting a Hulk, and also simulate gradual warming up (sort of).

Also yes, yes please to the full-body clothes. <3

Some weird stuff.
I slept with too many layers on (torso and face) and woke hot and hungry but slaked. After that it also made consuming any comestibles, even first aid kits, give the message “you can’t finish it all.” I quit, reloaded, and tried again. Going to sleep at Comfortable didn’t cause this to happen, so I assume it’s temp related.
