Set up the templates for crafting weapon mods, now it's time for some feedback

It seems kinda’ strange that we can craft things like bayonets and shortened/extended barrels, but not other bits similarly intricate or less so like blowbacks and auto-fire mechanisms or forward grips and pistol stocks, so I sat down and hammered out a basic set of recipes for pretty much every missing mod barring the M302 and M320, which’re probably a bit too much for even a dude with a full set of tools to make on his lonesome. Now it’s time to finangle with the fine details (EDIT: oh jeez I’m going to have to split this sucker into 2 posts):

Main thing I’m worried about is which tool qualities to use and the appropriate skill levels for each recipe: on one hand you are dealing with very fickle mechanisms whose failure will literally blow up in your face, but on the other I’m wondering if I highballed them compared to the standards required for other projects (like how you can make a frickin’ implantable laser gun at a lesser level than an auto-fire gizmo for a pistol).

File these as a PR on Git, please. Can’t guarantee that they’ll make it in as written, but the general idea is sound enough. Forums aren’t a good interface for code review though. :-/

There are some obviously practical ones like a bipod, pistol grips or a rifle stock, etc.
Gun barrels and firing mechanisms are off the table, you need a machine shop to make most of that stuff.

I figured an initial and more informal review would be better than tossing it straight onto github from the get-go, but OK.

In that case, we might need something like a machine lathe or machine shop furniture object to spawn in places like gunsmiths and garages, perhaps a vehicle rig version as well, that combines all the different tool qualities and at high-enough levels to make this sort of thing feasible.

Or stick with, “high-tolerance machining isn’t something that’s reasonable for a survivor to accomplish”, that works too.
The main focus of the game is scavenging and making do, not crafting everything you might want from scratch.

“Everything you might want” would include not just individual weapon mods, which’re but singular components with one explicit function and operation, but the weapons themselves. An M16 is a complex system of a dozen components which have to work together perfectly in order to function, and making one by hand would certainly be beyond the scope of an individual between the time and resources required. An AR-15 lightning link, though, can be produced by a sufficiently-skilled person with an adequate metalworking setup like one might have in their garage or business, and in firing mode respects turns the latter gun into the former.

I suppose things like tuned mechanisms and match triggers might be beyond the capability of individual fabrication, but in those cases they could be salvaged from military-grade weapons or stuff that has them as stock, like H&K USP match triggers. Other things that’re basically small pieces of machined metal and plastic, though, should be viable for hand-fabrication.

I get that the design is focused on items that could be plausibly built by a survivor by themselves, but two things come to mind:

  1. no one mentioned this, but OP should still code his idea and the devs should just add it in as a mod. Everyone wins.

  2. I don’t understand why this sentiment is coming out right now. We’re already capable of ridiculous feats: creating coilguns, laser guns, plasma guns, cybernetic implants, FUSION REACTORS(!), nuclear bombs and many more. Comparatively speaking, a rifle scope is small beans.

The idea’s sitting on Github: removing the conversion kits, autofire stuff, and barrels would make it a shoo-in.

No, you can’t make a fusion reactor or most of the CBMs. Those that you can make are fairly Off and we’re trying to dial back. Making a scope is within acceptable parameters.

Yeah, the game was cool when it was that. At some point it became about building a mobile blacksmithing/alchemy lab that could churn out infinitely recyclable bullets, propellant, and diamond katanas.

Sometimes I like to make the game harder for myself- as I was doing this the other day, a thought occurred to me: If I set item spawn rates to nil and simulate a survival situation where many, many years have passed after “day zero” and every scavenge-able item to be found has already been found, I’m gonna have to rely 100% on crafting which means a certain percentage of items are going to be off the table for that character as they will never show up in the world.

What I’d propose in that case would be to allow only the most essential of items to be crafted so that players that enjoy alternative forms of play have a fighting chance, if not allow the actual weapon mods in their present forms, perhaps crappier makeshift versions of them to the tune of the makeshift suppressor and such.

The suppressor is already craftable, and has been for a very long time.

Of course, I mean other attachments like it- makeshift stocks, grips and such.
