So I had a thought while I was at work on the Datajack…
Rather than it be /just/ an E-Ink Tablet, I’m gonna split it up into two categories and suggest that it replace the finger hack.
Civilian Datajack:
E-Ink Tablet Functions, Can use as an Electrohack with 75% effectiveness (Low power). Can be used as a Control Laptop at “touch” range at 70% Effectiveness (Medium Power). Can deliver a disabling shock to low-end robots with 10% effectiveness (High Power Consumption). When hacking computers your chance of success is increased by 15%
Military Datajack:
E-Ink Tablet Functions, Can use as an Electrohack at 100% effectiveness (low power). Can be used as a control laptop at “touch” range at 100% effectiveness (Medium Power) Can deliver a disabling shock to all robots at 100% effectiveness (High-Power Consumption). When hacking computers your chance of success is increased by 45%
The “effectiveness” rating simply affects how well your computers skill works with the bionic.
Failure has some interesting effects. When hacking civilian terminals, the kinds that don’t shock you, it’s no different than failing a normal hack. But, when hacking military equipment (the kind that shocks you) failure can result in some bad shit. Damage from the ‘shock’ is increased (You plugged directly into the damned thing, what do you expect?)
The ‘touch’ hack radius is another interesting concept. On most robots (Manhacks being excluded because I don’t see a flying saw being something you’d want to grab.) you basically grab the robot, and plug into it and attempt to either override the IFF or deliver an electrical pulse to the robot’s computers. On the higher-end combat robots, attempting to hack their IFF or deliver an electrical pulse can backfire and the robot can send a pulse back to you. (Terminal shock concept)
A final idea, attempting to use the civilian version to hack or shock a higher end combat robot and failing with a ‘shock’ result can burn out your data-jack, resulting in double damage, destruction of the jack, and a new malfunctioning bionic for you to enjoy.
Attempting to hack a tank-drone with a civilian Datajack should result in catastrophic failure in all but the most skilled hackers. Might be interesting to hack cuffs while we’re at it.
Thoughts? When can I get one?
I’m iffy on making a Shadowrun-style datajack because DDA’s neuroscience isn’t anywhere near that spec. The Close Quarters Battle (auto-override motor functions to do pre-programmed moves) and memory backup (record your long-term memory as needed) bionics are about as far as things go. Being able to have a full computer implanted seems unlikely at best, and the cuffs, etc would probably be proofed against that sort of tampering anyway.
