Cataclysm: Metal Gear Solid

[quote=“LazyCat, post:230, topic:528”]I just tried this build on Windows 7, it’s terrible. There are all kinds of glitches and visual weirdness, it crashes, it freezes, it’s unplayable. How is it possible no one said anything about it?

Don’t you see any other problems with it on Windows 8 except that crash? When waiting, for example, don’t you see anything strange, like window “not responding”, flickering or turning to blank white screen?[/quote]

Never happened to me about that, MGS runs very smoothly, no freezing or flickering visual, much better than DDA, more playable too, are you sure? I’m using Win7 64-bit and do not use Win XP compatibility…

The Road map: the active and do not notice any additional information on the main map, never

I’m glad to hear that. It runs nice on my XP too, but I tried it on another computer with Win7 and it was unplayable. In any case I have now revisited drawing code and made the game run 40% faster while trying to figure out what the problem could possibly be, and when I install Win7 on some of my computers I’ll see what’s really going on there and why it works on some computers and why on some it doesn’t.

Whoever has problems with the latest release on Win7/Win7 computers should better use version 40.

The Road map: the active and do not notice any additional information on the main map, never

Additional information is that you can see whole of it. When you press ‘m’ you are looking at the road map. To know where everything is you either have to go there and see it, or you can use road map item and then you will be able to see everything on the map (road map) even if you haven’t been there yet, just like in real life.

Are you saying the game crashes at other times beside when you are using Chrome browser? When, where, what were you doing?

I see you tried this mod at lest since version 30b, but I don’t see you mentioned any problems before. Did you see game crash any time before the latest release? Did you have audio problems ever before? Did you see any visual glitches of any kind with any of the previous builds?

I got crashes on previous builds, but no sound errors and I saw a 8x8 square of none.

Normally it crashes when I’m continuously moving or doing something that requires time-consumption i.e. Crafting, sleeping, ect ect…

It doesn’t crash on my system at all. I can’t do much about it if I don’t know about it, you need to tell me enough information about it so I can make it happen on my computer to be able to track it down. What version, where were you, what you doing exactly? Can you save your game and then duplicate the crash in the next few moves?

Did you give us back the ability to have multiple character templates?

What is preventing you? You can have multiple character templates, as always. I even asked of people to make additional templates for other Metal Gear characters, like Revolver Ocelot, Cyber Ninja, Vulcan Raven, Meryl, Vamp, Fortune, Volgin, Big Boss… how would you like to make some of those character templates for everyone?

You know, it takes me 10% of time to code anything, and 90% I spend on testing. I’d imagine it would be in everyone’s interest to help with testing as that would produce better game faster, but strangely only a few people bothered to post even a simple feedback.

Find some bugs, make a report with a list of things you saw are not working right or you think it could be better, or give me at least some general feedback of the things you like and dislike in this mod, then feel free to request any feature or change in the game and I’ll do it like I did before for people who cared enough to write a feedback or bug-report.

Ever wanted to have cougar for a pet?

features pending: “animal tamer”

  • feed pets, train them, love them
  • feeding restores your pet’s HP
  • pet’s kills increase their skills
  • feed pets with dog or cat food
  • wild animals are harder to tame

Dog whistle is now “animal training whistle” and works for any tamed animal. Wild animals will not always respond, but the higher are you survival and barter skills the higher is the chance they will obey or be tamed to start with.

The SDL version not work… and they both have limited the number of tiles to 17…

Thanks anyway, great work

Windows 7 64-bit, right? I guess 64-bit Windows need different .dll files, try this:

http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf/release/SDL_ttf-2.0.11-win32-x64.zip

Just unzip and copy it to the game folder over the old files. If that doesn’t work you can try running it in compatibility mode.

17 tiles to the left, 17 to the right, plus one in the middle, that’s 35x35 tiles. How much bigger do you want it? Please post a screenshot of your whole desktop with the game running so I can see how it looks like on your computer.

You can actually make it bigger if you modify “./data/options.txt” file by hand, however light/shadow effects will only be mapped to surrounding 35x35 tiles.

Do you notice the game runs faster, smoother… a lot, or you don’t see any difference at all?

Speaking of SDL, can you hear music when you listen to MP3?

One of the things Nethack gets right–there aren’t many, IMO–is that critter-food divides into Treats/OK/Borderline/Non-Edible. Carnivorous/omnivorous pets should be able to make do with chunks of meat same as player-characters–but Fancy Feast will certainly be preferred.

(Plant marrow isn’t easy to get. IIRC it only comes from Triffids, etc. so making Dog Food isn’t trivial. Unless you wrote one, there isn’t a recipe for Cat Food.)

What is preventing you? You can have multiple character templates, as always.[/quote]Then could you explain to me as to why the game won’t let me move to “Custom Character” or “Random Character” whenever I select “New Game” at the main menu?

In other words, it won’t let me pick anything other than the “Old Snake” character template. I don’t particularly like that about the latest versions. Cataclysm’s character creation, from what someone else may have said, is supposed to let the player make their character how they want it to be, not to be forced to pick one single template every time they start a new game.

As much as I love this mod and the new content and sound effects, I will not play any MGS mod version later than rev.34 until the option to have multiple character templates is returned. [sub][sup][sub]I’m saying this as politely as I can.[/sub][/sup][/sub]

I made dog and cat food spawn at certain places, as well “training whistles”.

I’m not forcing you to do anything, don’t play it if you don’t like it. Or realize that you can, as I already said, make custom character templates and save them as new ones. Read the instructions. Before starting the game you can use ‘<’ to go back through tabs and modify the character as you wish.

GlyphGryph says: Behave. Seriously not called for.

There is such thing as “critique” Lazycat. If you want to know why people dislike/like your mod, or know who’s playing it, you should listen. They’re not demanding anything; BadSniper’s just trying to explain why they don’t want to play with the mod anymore. You do not need to tell them to “go fuck yourself” as you so politely put it.

SDL applied the fix and still does not work… Not in compatibility mode either.

Why not let everyone choose the screen size? I like it to look as much as possible game terrain, something like 40x30 aprox. for example.

In Rev44 the game works very fluid, in this version I’ve noticed that after save a game, to be loaded later, appear sudden CTD when I approach the edges of the map, it will be a bug? This happens more and more often to load the game again after each CTD to have to cancel and start a new game.

I’m started to used jump and push and is very fun and useful, great adittion

Excuse my english

Ok. For it to be addressed then other people would need to report how it works or doesn’t on their computers. I need reports from other computers using other versions of Windows in order to see where the problem could possibly be.

Why not let everyone choose the screen size? I like it to look as much as possible game terrain, something like 40x30 aprox. for example.

It does not fit with optimal font size. There is a comfort limit posed by the properties of human eyes, resolution, size of the screen and the distance from where it is viewed from. Plus, it ruins atmosphere in the game, it slows down the game, it makes some things looks ugly and some game mechanics unbalanced. There is no 2D top-down view game in the whole world with that many tiles. Even if it was possible it would be like printing newspaper on a postcard.

Why is it you want bigger terrain? So you don’t have to use “look around”? It makes driving easier? It looks better? What is it?

1.) Modify ./data/options-mfc.txt and set your desired viewport size, then make a screenshot of your whole desktop with the game running and post it here.

2.) Set viewport back to 17x17 and modify ./data/fontdata-mfc to use 18x18 font size, then tell me if that’s better.

In Rev44 the game works very fluid, in this version I've noticed that after save a game, to be loaded later, appear sudden CTD when I approach the edges of the map, it will be a bug? This happens more and more often to load the game again after each CTD to have to cancel and start a new game.

What is CTD? Did you copy your old save folder or started a new game?

When crossing map border there is a short pause when the game saves the old map and loads a new one, you should see the message “CROSSING REGION BORDER”. It is normal and is the same in both versions. It should not happen more than once unless you are going back and forth across the border.

To properly compare the speed you need to test both versions with the same settings and game state. Delete save folder and start a new game, use the same viewport size as you did with older version you are comparing it with, or better yet use default size of 12x12 for both. Run around for a few seconds just after you started a new game and then tell me do you notice the latest build runs faster. Or you can take a stopwatch and measure how long it takes a character to run along the road across 10-20 overmap tiles, that’s what I do and it would be really helpful if you can measure it like that.

I'm started to used jump and push and is very fun and useful, great adittion

Good. With enough melee skill you will be able to stun monsters more often and push them further away. However if your strength drops down the power of kick/push will decrease too regardless of skill level. You can also push away monsters by pushing furniture on them. You can slam them against a wall or against other monsters. When you push monster against other monster they will both get damage.

Jumping and pushing are both awesome, btw, and will be making it into core sooner or later. I think I want to tweak both of them a bit implementation-wise, but I definitely plan on putting them in. They were both really good ideas LazyCat, so thanks.
