What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

MAKE A BAYONET

Okay this one’s gonna take some explaining…

DAWN OF THE FIRST DAY…
I smashed up some lockers and benches to make a crude sword and set my eyes to the west. Enroute I found a dead scientist squad with a Needler plus ammo and a Hazmat suit among other things. Little bit further and I found a dead military squad with some Rucksacks, a Rivtech Rifle and Revolver, and 50 rounds. Really, really lucky so far. Found a downed plane with some clothes and then found a Cabin, after I got all my stuff sorted out and put away I noticed a Hazardous Waste Sarcophagus about twenty minutes (game time) to the west and decided that’s where I’d go the next day.

DAWN OF THE SECOND DAY…
At first light of the second day I woke with one hell of a startle as there was a small horde (…Nothing small about it, easily 50-odd ants) of ants had camped outside of my cabin, and a few had found their way in (because I forgot to close the back door) they were not pleasant house guests but they weren’t trying to eat my face off so rather than spend my precious bullets on them I quietly let myself out. Went to the Hazardous Waste Sarcophagus and while the loot outside of it was nothing special, I did find a Military Cargo Truck inside, whilst searching the office area for the door controls I noticed some logs. While trying to know more I had read my way through the logs available and got to the last “log” which, much to my surprise… Blew the whole fucking place to kingdom come, and my Cargo Truck. Robbed of precious bionics I went home to cook up some ant meat, what could go wrong. Once home, and with a few dead ants in hand, I started a fire… But mispressed and set a pile of MREs on fire instead. Before I could think to use my fire extinguisher it spread to the rest of the cabin and I was forced to abandon it and the precious supplies inside. I spent the night in the HWS’s guard station.

DAWN OF THE FINAL DAY…
Started making my way west again, half a day later I was wandering through a swamp and found some slimes. Had to ditch my home-made cart (…A Frame with a box on it) to escape the slimes, dove into the river and tried to swim across. I lucked out and made it safely to the otherside, used a military ID from earlier to enter a silo, not much inside but there was a tent which I took with me to the surface to continue my trip west. I went to sleep in the tent and woke with one hell of a starter when an NPC decided to inform me I was in his territory, with a shotgun.

This is why I stay in vehicles.

I didn’t know how to do that, and either way a swarm got me. So I made a new save, couldn’t find any weapons worth anything, and spent an afternoon (in-game) grinding survival because I forgot to put any points into it with the goal of making a knife spear. Well, turns out they’ve nerfed it to the point where it’s completely and utterly useless. I hate when that happens. The crappy combat knife I already had was better, not that either is worth anything.

Seriously though, it doesn’t make any sense from a design standpoint, the knife spear is now WORSE than weapons you can make at 0 survival for components that are barely any rarer. But this is just me ranting at this point.

Just make a nail board. That bad boy works just fine.

Nah, the combat knife is still better than that. I’m just annoyed I had unknowingly invested time into grinding for something that’s useless now.

Finally found a spring for my repeating crossbow! For metal bolts, I needed a hacksaw and that was really difficult to get. One garage and two hardware stores didn’t contain one and I was really desperate until a random Zombie dropped one. Now it’s time to smash the shelves of a grocery store and make infinite bolts!

I decided to try out setting city size to zero and playing in a world without cities. My first try, I managed to clear out a mansion but got eaten by a bear on day one. The second character managed to clear out a FEMA camp on day one, then a bit of exploring found a hotel nearby. It really forces you to make full use of everything and explore a lot further than you usually do. I usually get so caught up in looting houses and making sure I’ve got absolutely every possibly useful item that I rarely travel very far.

So I decided to blow out a bank vault risking the noise and effort only to find a single money bundle.

Thank you devs.

Logically, what did you expect would be kept in a bank vault?

That is HILARIOUS.

Yes it has, its existance is now futile, time for suicide.

I tried to clear a forest with a dual v8 powered shopping cart. ran over 2 trees before getting killed  remember folks, Mass is important.

Bank vaults should logically be full of Paper, Money Bundles, jewelry (which at this point just means Gold Rings, Pocket Watches, and Silver Necklaces, unfortunately), and Gold. Not much use, but that’s what I’d expect to find there.

Not much use, but that’s what I’d expect to find there.
You could use the paper and (presumably useless) bundles of cash as kindling. With high enough temperatures (such as an electric forge, for example), one could possibly melt the gold rings and silver necklaces to make bullets.

It’s the apocalypse. You got to use what you find somehow.

Those metals are too soft for bullets, you would still need to use lead or steel for those, but you could probably make casings out of precious metals, maybe alloyed to be a little harder.

Forget bullets, with precious metals you could make high-end electronic circuits.

Honestly, you would be surprised what people keep in safety deposit boxes at a bank. In rare cases, you could find a handgun. Money could be used to burn. Jewels to trade. Gold bars to smack a bitch.

I recently suicided with my last character, who had actually set up a decent base inside a Church, and was amassing a fair amount of supplies from within the (rather large) city. I had upped city sizes to 6 and tuned the spawn rate down to 0.3, which probably is what made it so boring.

Now, I genned a world with City Sizes: 1 and the spawn rates at 0.5, and I recently cleared a lucky Apartment Tower by kiting the undead residents through windows and stabbing them with a knife spear. I’m currently about to board up and fortify the area around the bedroom to make a base for the first day. Tomorrow in-game I’ll probably be mapping the area in hopes of finding something else relating to supplies and weapons, perhaps working on clearing the hotel south-east of my apartment base, but for now it’s just me and what I have at hand.

I fell in love with a zombie, unfortunately they didn’t feel the same…those love bites? Yeah, just zombie bites. I may need to get myself checked.

That is HILARIOUS.
Imagine my reaction at that time, I was expecting some sort of Ali Baba treasure in there.
