What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

I made a friend. A woman with a quarterstaff who was scarily good at beating absolutely everything to death up to and including zombie moose.

And then… suddenly a jabberwock randomly attacked…

She ran off to fight it and walked into a land mine.

I ended up blasting it to death with a shotgun but now I’m alone again.

Spring, Day 2.

Really did want to keep playing the other one, at the least to test out the endgamish monsters, but I got so bored. I made my deathmobile, I had enough ammo and a morningstar and a turret and plenty of healing. I was mutated and bored.

So new game, gonna test my new monsters. The wildlife and the zombies. I always have the niggling doubt when people say something is ‘too hard’ or ‘wannnh, it smashed me through a wall and 1 shotted me!’ :stuck_out_tongue:

So, thus far, I escaped my house, got bruted into a field (which saved my life, as a horde lost track of my scent because of it), and looted sidebyside sports stores. I have an aluminum bat, some neoprene arm sleeves, and a tailors kit. I have a soda can stove, a heavy duty flashlight, and quite a few batteries already. I ran to a nearby shelter and leveled to 3 tailoring. Made my cargo shorts and sleeveless duster and hoodie and backpack, and I have some swimming booties. I have a survival knife too, though I dont really do cutting playthroughs unless its required by enemy armor.

I find a mine a bit to the north, and I would love to find an early filter mask. And maybe even early artifact? we’ll see, and I can test out the dark wyrms with a weakling.

New game, day 2 spring.

Last guy made it 2 more days before 3 cars he found broke down. 1 lost its gas tank. 1 was electric and because the weather in spring is so ass it ran out quickly. 1 was leaking battery all over the place.

So, when the hulk finally buttsext through the public works window in response to he himself breaking into it, what was left but to cry in desparation and run out to try in vain to start the bus that was parked outside? It didnt work, none of the damn cars in this world did.

This one got out and scoured a neighborhood that was headed off by a culdesac and a national guard base with 8 turrets ringing it. The turrets were out of ammo from a nightime of shotting zombies, and the zombies were all busy rubbing the turrets for good luck. So he raided the area. Most of the goodies were under the roof rubble, and on his way out he went to the far side of the building and a turret caught him in the lung with a military grade round.

Wounded, leaking his 80 hp all over the ground, the survivor ran north out of town, chased by just enough fat zombies to make him fear for his life. He stopped for the night at a rest stop, sleeping in a disparaged RV. A cougar was harrassing him all night, and he took to lighting the rest stop on fire in order to read 2 skill books in the dark, for he had no flashlght, nor the health to continue just yet. As an insomniac he couldnt just sleep back his health either. He was not tired.

Now,on day 3, he faces a long road with no health, his only weapons a damaged pipe and a sling full of marbles. He has a ton of booze, some gas in a plastic bottle, and a red sliver of health for a torso.

Day 06.

Took a day to heal, and took off west into the wilds with nothing but a cart. zombies were swarming the countryside, and the moose and cougars were active. I found an AR15, and that kept me safe for the worst of the fighting, but I used my knowledge of ai pathing and combat priorities to survive, baiting a pack of wolves to fight a moose, baiting a cougar into fighting zombies, and running the hell away from everything else.

At one point I had to sprint through the woods with my cart. I was unwilling to leave it behind, so I navigated the woods while trying to lose the horde of zombies following me. This led me to a spot, in the night, where a turret blockade was set up.

the turret were kind-of busy shooting zombies, so I knew something was nearby. I sprinted to the car and drove it back to my cart as the turret destroyed the roof. I found out that I was next to a prison, a fact which prompted the near fatal choice to try to loot the weapon stashes.

Inside the prison, I found a brute, which took two shotgun shells and a smack to the face to kill. I took a smash to the wall. I found a police bot and a skitterbot inside, and avoided one while popping the other with my AR. I went downstairs and omg there were 3 brutes hanging out at the base like some gang of ruffians. They ruffianed me up good too.

Limping back to my car, I drove off to a mansion, where I leveled up my marksmen to 1, confirmed than handgun skillgain is in fact broked, and found an awl pike and ornamental armor that fits me.

I decided to wear the helm and the fullsuit despite my usual inclinations not to. And the pike too. these are slow things indeed, and I had sufficent armor already, but I was struck by how it seemed meant to be, that I would find them in a mansion that I stopped to R&R my broken body at. Now, 2 days of rest and reading later, I leave with 5 hours of sunlight left, my skivies and a back holster and backpack on, and bone armor boots.

I am Pisskop, Knight of Pinewood Groves, and my AR is fucked from overuse. If you see my hippie van coming you time is up! As long as I have booze.

It seems fate has decided to smile upon me for once…

Not only did I find that ESR rifle in a lab…

I just found a Rivtech 8x40mm Scout rifle in someone’s front yard.

Also, turns out someone programmed the Rivtech pump action shotgun with an incredibly satisfying CLICK CLICK BOOM sound effect the usual shotguns don’t have.

However, I’m having issues with long range shooting. Despite my rifles having essentially zero dispersion even with the ammo included, and despite me having about 7-8 levels in rifle skill, targets at mid to long range are more likely to be missed than hit.

Any tips? Do I just need higher skill? It’s kind of making sniper rifles a bit pointless. I tried to snipe a Jabberwock but due to the aforementioned issues, I ended up just putting away the sniper rifle and using the .50 BMG machine gun on my nearby vehicle.

Are you taking the time to aim? I am pretty sure that is a thing

If he’s raiding labs he probably knows how to aim

I think that’s just how firearms work ATM.

If you mange to get 12 dex and per you might extend your range a few extra tiles.

That is a thing. But I’m already doing it. I’ve been doing it manually to see how the confidence increases. I can go up to max steadiness while the confidence of hitting is still below half way. I think it was about that when I tried shooting the Jabberwork about 50 distance units away. Considering the max range of the rifle and the fact that it’s a dedicated sniper weapon, and that my dispersion is tiny, this seems utterly ridiculous.

Also yeah if you’re really having a lot of trouble hitting things, try modding your weapon. You can get some weapons to have literally zero recoil and aim very very fast if you put enough mods on them.

If memory serves, I currently have a recoil stock, bipod, sniper conversion, barrel extension etc on the rifle to the point where I can’t put any other mods on it unless they fit into the accessories or mechanism slots.

I’m not sure if the Match trigger is currently on there or not. Might be the adjustable stock. I forget.

But basically there’s very little dispersion if any. I also accurised.

I think I have something like level 8 skill in rifles.

I can hit things fine. It’s just that I can’t do so at the ranges you’d want to actually be using a sniper rifle at.

Ranged combat with guns is currently limited to pistol ranges for some reason. Could somebody explain why?

Some guns fire a lot farther than pistols. Might just be the gun you’re using.

If you assume a tile is equal to a 3-foot cube, or 2-foot like pisskop said, the guns in game have a fraction of their IRL effective range.

This too is a problem. Considering the sizes of houses in game, shotguns and some pistols effectively can’t shoot across a room.

The max ranges on a lot of the shotguns are hilariously stupid. The Rivtech pump action shotgun on the other hand is a lot more reasonable. Shotguns do NOT have short range in real life and I wish games would stop getting it wrong. A shotgun is incredibly likely to get a hit at a very long range, in fact. Just probably won’t hit with all the pellets which would reduce the damage. Shotgun range/accuracy at range should arguably always beat pistols because a pistol isn’t intended for long distance aiming even if the bullets will go plenty far. (Again, lol at Rivtech weapons. Have you seen the range on the 8x40mm rounds and the resulting max range of the 4x40mm pistols?)

Additionally, if you’re firing slugs from a non-rifled shotgun barrel, wouldn’t you expect the accuracy to be crap? I think you’d actually be better off using buckshot if you want to hit at long range.

Then there’s the fact that something just plain seems to be wrong with the rifle shooting because while their ranges are often perfectly reasonable (at least compared to the other guns) they just don’t seem to actually be accurate at those ranges.

And of course the OTHER issue with the ridiculously long range weapons is that I think the range can exceed the reality bubble, and I’m not sure what the point in that is. Unless perhaps you’re remote controlling your vehicle’s sniper turret on one side of the bubble firing at enemies on the other side of it.

Firearm ranges are low because going with realistic ranges would mean sniper rifle would have the same effective range as a pimped out pistol due to reality bubble.

When in doubt, gameplay > realism

I found an etched human skull in a museum. When I drove back to the shelter, I threw it away on the grass, after realizing that it’s in fact useless.

Several days later, I saw it over there, and decided to burn it. So I put some newspaper on it, and take out the lighter. It suddenly began to rain! As soon as I light the newspaper up, the fire went out.

But then, you also cross a tile of open-ground in a turn (or 6 seconds), which, assuming a brisk walking pace would make it around 8 meters.

So yeah, it’s better not to think about distances too hard and just consider gameplay. From that perspective, I guess there is an argument to be made that accurate rifles should be better at long range.

i think max range should be higher on guns.

maybe max aiming range can stay down…

be an interesting mechanic, to manually aim at a target past 10 tioes abd try to hit it

I believe you can turn those into magical essence actually.
