What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

Whoa, I’ve never seen SWAT armor before. Do you remember where you found it? That sounds awesome. Also, I usually prefer the katana to the arming sword just because of rapid strike and the possibility of learning Ninten Ichi-Ryu, but maybe I should try some western swords?

You can find it SWAT vans. Definitely one of the best lootable armors available. As far as the arming sword it seems to kill enemies more efficiently than the katana.

Nice, thanks for the tip. I’ll keep my eye out for some, though honestly I always seem to craft Kevlar-reinforced nomad gear or plated leather armor within the first week or two, rendering most other armor pointless. Nothing stopping me from not using that stuff, though.

Very true… unless you have Niten Ichi-ryu, then the katana (or wakizashi, which I prefer) becomes a monstrous destroyer of freaking everything.

Well, not QUITE that ridiculous anymore, but definitely worth using then.

After 30 or so deaths on D1, I think I have a winner. After getting pounded and running through the apparent circus loops Im now required to do since they decheesed me, I found a wrecked fire truck and got a set of nonfitting fire crap. Then I found a fire axe in a basement nearby. Im sitting with a moderately overencumbered character and I have low health and no vehicle, but my pain is low enough to be managable, my weapon is solid, and my armor is significant enough to 1v1 critters. Or 1v1x7, as the case seems to be.

Rollerblader? Dead.
Guy with a shotgun? Dead.
Guys who ran into a brute and couldnt outrun them because apparently smell is super easy to do now? dead.
Guys who lucked into finding a horde inside a building? dead.

Escaped the underground lab in the Lab Challenge Start. Now my poor technician is finally checking out the topside world after months of being under secure layers of concrete and earth, only to find it’s even more hellish out here than it is in the lab. I found a car and am now trying to get enough food and water to survive while dodging massive swarms of zombies packed throughout this town I found. My extendable baton isn’t doing a great job at fighting them off.

Honestly, labs are really pretty nice. The only problems in labs are turrets, brutes eventually becoming hulks and wrecking the universe (so kill them first, eh?), and starvation.

Well, and secubots, but you can very easily avoid those.

Found SWAT armor, thought of Jarlaxlejr. Afraid to wear it because of the encumbrance + my low skill.
Also found sunglasses and fit-over sunglasses in the same house, decided to wear both.

Okay. It appears that the best strat for my naked noncombatant is, suprise, not to fight.

He spawns, he scrambles around the house. He buys the npcs drugs and he steals the zombie’s shoes. He puts on what he can, but lets face it, his head and hands are freezing in the near future.

Either way, with a stick/board/pipebar he smashes the fridge and flees. This is probably the most dangerous part. Zombies are so ungodly good at following him, and hes so cold. He cant really hope to do more than outrun the stragglers and find a bush to beat the lead zombies in.

That done, he claws around houses hoping for a basement cache or a flashlight.

With that done, hes on the lokout for better armor and that one rare car that runs. Ugh.
He crafts some hand wraps if he can, and makes a nailboard if he can. Honestly though nail boards are so damn fragile in this new versions. And it lacks the block tech that it had earlier. And they buffed the stupid makeshift crowbar, so make that if you can.

But, Ive had to drop several old techniques.

-I cant weave between zombies because they smell so good, so I have to stay on the outskirts of town.
-I cant light ready fires, and fires even go out faster (?), so I cant really rely on those unless I preplan and feed the fires. A few thread keeps a fire going for minutes.
-I cant light fires in houses and craft as I go because zombies can find me easily.
-I can still light a basement on fire and craft while the house above me burns, but the filthy penalties add up on a character who is cold and drunk and bd tempered and a slow learner and eating raw beans. And how long before thats nerfed out?

Of all the things to give me difficulty its been the lowly shady zombies that have killed me the last few times. Entire hoards of the things have trailed my scent all the way home, clogged up store and house entrances and generally made it impossible for me to raid. There’s no way of knowing that they’re following you on a night raid. One pops into my field of vision, I start fighting it and then 8 more surround me and run me out of stamina as I try to fight my way out of the massive group that’s amassed around me without my knowledge. If this ridiculous scent tracking is going to be a permanent addition then they need to make these things stop spawning in groups.

The shades have full night vision.

Have they always had that? I’ve easily sunk a couple hundred hours into this game and I’ve never had problems dealing with them until now. In fact they’ve been so weak up to this point that I always considered them a bit of a joke.

They were always intended to have that, but due to a bug they didn’t and were effectively blind instead.

On one hand I like the Shady Zombies as they are now, but on the other hand they’re kind of a harsh counter to night raiding early on, when night raiding is usually most useful, without being a big issue mid-/late-game. The fact that you can get unlucky and only realize you’re surrounded when they’re up on you is rough, and it’s made worse by how strong grabs are now. You can counter with flashlights and day raiding, but the former generally means the other zombies are going to eat you now, and the latter generally requires a different mindset/playstyle. Still, it’s a far cry better than being relatively safe at night, so like I said, I kind of like them anyway.

If you put on a blindfold you can hear the ninja zombies coming.

The only problem is that you’ll be completely blind

I’ve got to play around with the ‘Blind swordsman’ idea before.

EDIT: Auto-correct sucks

Got 3 NPC friends. Milked them for skills. Gave them some nice early gear.
Got a zed master buffed horde. Escaped with 0 NPC friends.
Got 3 ideas:

[ul][li]We need a squad menu[/li]
[li]We could use a morale penalty for dying friends[/li]
[li]Having NPCs pick flowers (dahlias and dandelions) would be easy to write and useful[/li][/ul]

After that, I got attacked by 2 morons: one with a double barrel shotgun, one with a crossbow.
Opinion forming needs fixing. NPCs need to understand that a player who looked harmless before now has a shotgun in his hands.

I just downloaded the newest expi, and it works much better wrt, day 0 intercity starts with a naked noncombat character at balls.

Or at least my survival rate was noticably higher. Luck or lowered zombie faceeatting.

Be Max Bachman, squeamish butler extraordinaire
Taking my daily stroll through the northern part of town I set up shop in
See some guy walking around, first human I’ve seen since the world ended
Go talk to him
Suddenly he tries to mug me
OK, keep cool, this is what you learned bartitsu for
Run at the guy to beat the hell out of him with my trusty reinforced quarterstaff
Moron runs at me with his bare hands
Apparently this guy thinks he’s some kind of Fist of the North Star bad guy who can mug people with his fists
Laugh
Five minutes later he’s a bloody pulp

Cata NPCs are idiots

I carved “Be Afraid” into my Kevlar combat helmet. As a troglobyte, slime-covered freak with a love of cannibalism and collecting human skin, it seems like a reasonable warning.
And yet, NPC McUrist keeps attacking me with a cudgel.
It’s kind of odd when you’ve killed so many NPC’s over 5 years of game time, I can’t even remember them all. I did have a friend, once. A rare soul who looked past the horror of my being and was kind and wanted to help me.
He was killed by a Hulk a few years ago. Ever since then it’s been me vs the entire world.
