What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

So, I started randomly playing Cataclysm again after almost nine months away. Started a new world, started a couple new characters, died a lot like I usually expect to.

Then I tried the crashed chopper scenario thing and everything went kinda crazy.

Constant noise coming from underground, like something very big is smashing a bunch of stuff down there. Always underneath me. My crash was right outside a small town, see. I have melee skills, so I fight my way through some of the town, trying to explore, doing pretty okay. Found a cave outside town, empty, perfect place to stash stuff, so hey, stash stuff. Making loot runs all through day one.

Then I start trying to figure out what that darn noise is.

I break into the sewers, find nothing. Well, not NOTHING… lots of irradiated walkers. But the noise is still below me.

Try a bunch of basements in town, nothing. Nothing goes to the next Z-level.

Find a bank, can’t get into vault, swear a bit, give up on bank and move on.

Find a bunch of zombies fighting a pair of ammoless turrets. Laugh for a second, then wipe out the zombies one at a time because hey free skill points basically.

Then start to wonder why zombies are spawning around me randomly. Like… a lot. In areas I’ve already cleared out. I start thinking I need a distraction, so I head to the police station where one of the cruisers was still operational… turn on the lights and the sirens. Let the zombies go towards that, maybe they’ll ignore me. Still doesn’t explain why there are so many zombies, but at least it’s a problem I can hopefully manage with a distraction…

Check to make sure Static Spawn is on… it is.

Check hordes, see nothing. Nope, no horde I can detect.

Grumble a bit, start taking my most recent collection of loot back to the cave… through territory I laboriously cleared… twice.

Get punched across the map by a sudden inexplicable Zombie Brute that comes out of nowhere, runs up to me in like three bounds, and whacks me into a wall. Then start to fight it with my combat knife… get it to about half health before it punches me across the map again. Now I’ve got a broken leg. Couldn’t outrun it BEFORE the broken leg, definitely can’t now.

Oh good, and there are like fifteen other zombies now.

In an area I’ve cleared out extensively.

Twice.

And then the brute punches my face in.

All this in ONE DAY. I racked up 127 kills in day one and I’m GUESSING it’s whatever’s making all that noise underground that’s bringing in the horde, but what in goodness name IS it?!

I’m going back with a new character someday. Going to find out what the heck is going on down there…

But in the meantime, I officially hate zombie brutes and their facepunching of my face.

It’s not polite.

Summer, day 45.

Now that the still is go, my alter ego has been binge-drinking tainted drinks. Usually before sleeping so that the depressing effects wear off before she gets up. The recent binge made her so thirsty she drank 3/4 of a jug in one go :stuck_out_tongue:

She seems to be going towards any of the following: Trog/Spider/Insect/Fish/Chimera. Argh. Most of those have nasty downsides, so I think I’ll stop doing the roulette until I can make (targeted) mutagen.

Next time try exploring the whole sewer system.

Oh, I intended to… just that I hit a bunch of dead ends and then died before I got a chance to go back in.

I… still fully intend to.

SOMETHING is going to meet the wrong end of some doom…

Disease Immune, Extremely Strong, Full Night Vision, Infrared Vision, Quick Pain Recovery, and Road Runner… Damn bro, those are just the really good ones too, and you’ve got the absolute minimum in drawbacks all without having Robust Genetics. Your roulette character looks like the average end result of my eugenics programs.

Found a dojo… with no books! grrrrrrr Not that it matters too much. I started with Silat and already managed to learn fencing and medival swordsmanship.

Well, I finally got around to building that base I wanted to set up. It’s right at the outskirts of this pint-sized swamp, and there’s a window positioned perfectly so I can have infinite water AND daylight whenever I’m crafting anything. It even came with its own trees to supply the log walls. Many trees were killed in this process.

It’s currently just the walls with fully built windows and doors, and only the bedroom have a roof. All the nails for a proper roof is just…not going to happen. Jesus christ. 3 hours per 100 nails sucks when you require 1000+ nails PER ROOM. Many more trees will die for the log and sod roofs.

Now with the framework of a real base and 3 actual proper beds to choose from to sleep in and a fully maintained RV sitting under watch of a guarding NPC, I have come to the point where I must sit back and wonder what to do next. Winter is in 9 days, and while food’s on the low side, I’m not worried about getting it. Worse comes to worse we can hunt it. I could always study, but with my random mood spikes (schizophrenia ftw) doing that isn’t always possible. I’ve got full survivor gear and pretty much all the necessities.

Not sure how to proceed. Will log off and ponder this for a bit.

3 hours per 100 nails is not much, more time you will spend on constructing thing than crafting, try crafting 12 steel threads from scrap metal (craft all metal sheets, chains and everything from scrap metal)

Brutes happened.

And about half a city.

But mostly brutes.

Why are spitter zombies early game enemies again?

I recently encountered something peculiar in one city - there are no sewers as far as i can see, and i didn’t find any basement yet. BUT there is a lot of noise below me, and sewer rats kept spawning endlessly in one house - not only that, they spawned IN FRONT OF MY EYES - just two tiles away from me, they suddenly popped into existence… A bug in Z-levels? Or can rats dig holes to travel between Z-levels? After killing quite a lot of them(which attracted a brute to my location) they stopped spawning but the noise is still there… and seems to be following my character.

MrQwerty, a page back someone had the noise below thing too.

As for my alter ego, autumn welcomed her with a nasty reminder that tainted tornados are drinks too. Fortunately the addiction and cravings went away in a single day. It’s now day 3 and FNV is a huge help in clearing shops - I already cleared two pawnshops and two electronic shops I went in before, but missed a ton of stuff.

My survivor just passed one year post apocalypse, 15 day seasons. He wanders on killing zeds and watching the world spiral into madness and gloom.

right now, i am packing up to move from the refugee shelter to somewhere else… but i have no idea what to take with me and how to organise the storage in my police car(not enough skill, tools, imagination or luck to find/make one of those fabulous machines everyone seems to be riding in…).
Well, i’ll be moving some things into a survivor basement i found in a house of a half-cleared town so i’ll know what i missed then… and as i am writing this, i remembered what i forgot - my treasure, the atomic nightlight… sigh i’ll have to go back there the next day…

I just learned that those grabber zombies have some new tricks up their sleeves. I was just dragged around a field by a grabber while about a dozen regular Z’s played wack-a-mole with my squishy new character.

On a new lab survivor I checked out a nearby mine on my travels. Ended up with an artifact dagger (rather fittingly “Dagger of Unknown Dreams”) that’s nothing to write home about as a weapon…

But activating it mutates and heals you

And recharging hurts you

So I was able to just loop-de-loop this effect with impunity until my survivor became some sort of wooden fish/bird with eight tentacles, a sudden aversion to junkfood and reptilian IR. Anytime I got something bad I could just shuffle it around until it cleared…

Doing so made my mutant WEIRD

This also made me privy to the perplexing fact one can have long fingernails AND tentacle arms simultaneously.

I got stuck with carnivore…but since lab challenge lets you pick alcohol metabolism from the get go I’ve been on a liquid diet from day one…

DAT artifact. I’d love it.

I wonder if we can debug artifacts in?

I’ve had a lot of supposedly “incompatible” mutations simultaneously, like Heat Dependent and Fast Metabolism. I think there’s a bug.

Its all relatively edittable if you guys feel up for it . . .

one time i had bark and green scales at this same time

Travis Gordon, US Marshal. Has a nice ring to it methinks.

Now to try and get rid of the light sensitive mutation… and kick so ass!
