What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

Actually, I had one run in 0.4 that made it clear (or cloudy, rainy and cold if you like) that one always needs to stay alert concerning outdoors conditions. I would, and could defeat lord Baal but the blisters in the morning were as common as candy with morning coffee.

scarf is one that’s fantastic, a gas mask if that’s available. you could also find a ski mask OR balaclava. those all offer mouth warmth

Zombie hulks

Zombie hulks are happening

And I left all my grenades in my hut.

Damn.

I find that a bandana is my favorite mouth piece as it has no encumberance. Gas masks are, of course, my preference, but I’ve been pretty unlucky in regards to clothing recently.

The 0.5 maps are not being nice to me. I find every tool I could possibly want, no weapons, and rarely useful clothing. I don’t think I need 20 welders or 30 hammers or a dozen shovels…
Fighting off 5 bears with a nail board, hammer or shovel is simply ineffective when you haven’t gained any combat skills yet, even if you have enough pit traps to fight them consecutively rather than simultaneously.

Tried my first game in .5 Got the common cold after like, the first hour somehow, and I started with webbed hands/feet so i couldn’t wear gloves or use my sleeping bag… So who has webbed hands and froze all night? thumbs up to self “This guy!!!”

I found a gun, and get this, COMPATIBLE AMMO on the SAME corpse :open_mouth:

the RNG shine on me this day

Found a nice not-too-destroyed Flatbed Truck on the road, there’s a gas station nearby but the nearest jerrycan is miles away (if only I decided to go back for it after finding my first backpack…). Currently weaving in-between cars that got blockaded at a crash site in the outskirts of town, trying to clear the area of zeds with my crossbow (31 bolts after finding an ammo cache in the middle of nowhere!) to get to a nearby military surplus store (currently guarded by a Wolf Spider and Jumping Spider). Hopefully it has a jerrycan like the first one I entered a day ago did.

Careful. Sounds like your Karma just tapped out. Expect an armoured hulk around the next corner juggling landmines.

I found a public works with everything I need starting out to survive other then 2 pieces of string to craft a bow. There was a couple houses on the outskirts to a town that had the string that I needed so now I have 2 jerry cans (from the public works), delicious boiled toilet water, and the means to hunt the rabbits and squirrels that are around me. I started off as a tailor so I have a book to read and I can survive endlessly until I level my archery enough in order to clear the town safely.

yes that is an older version, I wanted to play the original before getting into dark days ahead

and yes that is with no driving skill (it’s probably not as hard as I first thought but I still cant believe the RNG didn’t screw me over)

so how has your luck been fellow survivors?

Found a flatbed truck with a working engine, half a tank of fuel, and working controls, got surrounded by Z’s, escaped while dodging broken cars, and finally crashed into a bank vault while attempting a powerslide.

The first town I was in had very little good stores, mostly houses, so I only had a nailboard, very little food and medicine when the zombies showed up… I don’t even know how there were so many, oh the gods the swarm was at least 20 big, after running around I finally find a working truck, and get the hell out of dodge. Traveling along the road I must have hit the motherload of zombies, I don’t know how they found me since it was the middle of nowhere, but I decided to have a little fun and run them all over… 105 zombies, in the middle of nowhere there was 105… I-i-i-i what is with this game! After running them all over, losing my front tire and most of the frame I crash into an apartment complex, jump out and start running thinking “Yes! Yes! I ran over all those zombies, i’m finally safe!!!”

… stepped on a gad-damned landmine…

The best source of string now, is to break a few (stage 3) windows, you get string - 3ft, 2 sheets, and a heavy stick from any window that has blinds (Evac Shelter, and any ^ house).
You can Disassemble( ‘(’ ) the string - 3ft into multiple string - 6inch, which don’t have any weight or volume, most recently I have something like 300 of these on me because I escape through windows a lot.

I might suggest making everything have a weight in large enough numbers, even if volume isn’t an issue. For example if you completely disassemble a 30ft rope, you get 180 weightless 6-inch strings.

I believe that is on our list of “things to do”, something like “cause items to have weight/volume when the stack becomes large enough”.

I got murdered almost as soon as I started a game.

Static spawn has changed for the worse. I tried to stealth my way into the buildings on the outskirts, but there were zeds there too, and they can see from 40 flippin’ tiles away. So I fought them off as well as I could, but as soon as I smashed a window, I was attacked by two more, a spitter, and a boomer, which attracted the attention of a BRUTE after I fought it off.

With no ranged weapon, and loads of pain already, the brute easily curbstomped me. No chance.

Is the game supposed to be impossible? I think the only way to win early on is to spend tons of points in dodging and just flee from everything until you get a gun or a car with gas, then you clear out an entire town.

Frustrated.

There are probably dozens of threads on how to survive static spawn in the early game, but suffice to say no, it isn’t impossible. And it’s arguably easier in 0.5 than it was previously. As is always true of Cataclysm, much rides on luck.

That is the most common reason.
should i not be?
You should always wear a wool cap when sleeping (or something warmer) or you will have a very hard time staying asleep. The same goes for socks and pants.
Unless it’s Summer, at which point the wool cap will overheat you. I think the first mod I make will be to make CBM: Thermal Regulation non-power-draining again.

That should be a relatively simple change. Just open up the cataclysmWin file with codeblocks and search “thermal” and you should be able to figure things out from there.

Yep; already found the place I’d need to change. All I need to do is get some time to work out the compiler.

Apart from that, the 08May version was certainly interesting. I’d hold that the Office Tower wasn’t worth much and Schools immediately on the riverbank, especially with dynamic spawn, aren’t that great either. The new recipes are pretty good, as are the new books (though the Mansion library was a bit fiction-heavy).

How exactly does a Furniture Store benefit the player? I’d love to get an Armchair or a Sofa for my base (and they ought to be comfy for sleeping purposes, hint) but I haven’t yet been able to move any furniture, let alone get it onto a vehicle or push it across town.

Schools can actually be rather handy assuming you can eat the kid killing morale drop. There is usually some food and occasionally some skill books. Worst case scenario, there are lots of escape points and tons of flammable material.

Furniture stores seem rather useless. I found one and immediately used it as a zombie bonfire.
