Vehicle Show and Tell

That I don’t know, I haven’t tried it for purely aesthetic reasons.

If I recall correctly, more wheels increase rolling resistance, but also increase offroad. Larger wheels also have more resistance than smaller ones.

Ok, after much work I have managed to add another 14 armoured wheels. Despite this, the Ursa III can now only do 5 km/h on roads. Fail.

Edit: With 30 armoured wheels the “rolling drag” is 48.50 and the “static drag” is -6000. “Offroad” is 47%.

You have static drag? That’s odd. The only time I had static drag was when I turned on plow & seed drill.

I have no such equipment mounted; no plows, seed drills or reapers, only wheels.

bump

Would love to find a way to get the Ursa III to move! What does a “static drag” of -6000 mean, what could be causing it, and what can I do to reduce it? Negative drag seems odd!

Do you have 2 large wind turbines mounted?

Ha! I did indeed, and removing them changed the static drag to zero. Makes sense when you think about it… Thanks for the help - I’ve just taken her up to over 70km/h cross terrain with little trouble, though acceleration is understandably sluggish. Not a problem; she’s not a race car

I’m surprised that 6000 W of drag alone was enough to make your deathmobile immobile. That’s pretty insignificant power compared to what 2 enhanced electric motors provide. Well, unless those 6000 are not watts but something else…

Rockin’ up next to a military base with my rag tag crew, some 200 overmap tiles away from my home base. Yes, it is tricky to move such a large vehicle, but if you go slow and scout ahead - and occasionally stop to repair collision damage(!) - it’s not only doable but a lot easier than I thought it would be. Looking carefully at the overmap and planning a route beforehand helps! At almost 35 tonnes I arrive equipped with all the food, ammunition, tools and supplies - and loot storage capacity - one could possibly need for taking on a big target like this in one go :upside_down_face:

Edit: still missing a couple of “fancy tables” to complete the bedrooms, are limousines the only source for these?

Can we see the examine vehicle display?

Why did you build it in this shape and not as a rectangle? You would gain more space.

Don’t know about tables, but I don’t regard them as useful additions to a vehicle. You only need one vehicle workbench to get a 20% crafting time discount up to 30L. For more you can find a folding table and unfold it outside of the vehicle for crafting. Or, perhaps you could leave one inner tile of vehicle unpopulated, so you can unfold the table there and craft in safety. Or, you could edit vehicle workbench definition to support 1000L of stuff.

Sure!

Just for flavour, to make it look more interesting. Oh and to provide protected spaces for the utility vehicles I bring along; two two tile scouting vehicles (“Hugin” for salvaging vehicles, “Munin” for raiding & hunting), and two single tile workshop trolleys (a boom crane and a welder). Each of these carry a complete supply of tools & equipment for their intended tasks.

Again, this is just for flavour - I liked the idea of each crew member having their own cabin, with seat & table, a bed and a storage unit (where I store any the items the NPC was carrying when recruited but are no longer using). It’s not merely about survival, or the most efficient solutions - it’s more like a game, where the characters play roles. Sounds crazy, I know. That said, the two workbenches in the workshop area are positioned so that the relevant materials, tools and books are accessible from each. One is for chemical/medical crafting, the other for all other crafts. And the table in the communal area is on the same line as the kitchen unit; I can jump straight to the table to eat after preparing a meal.

Edit: My followers are usually asked to sit & study in their respective cabins, or be on guard there, with the windows positioned so that they can monitor the outside for threats. This arrangement has proved useful more than once. I just wish I could get them to man the mounted guns above their seats, but auto targeting works pretty well as an alternative (while using a f***ton of power of course).

Edit 2: In case you’re wondering, my “control desk” is just a clone of the “workbench” part with a different sprite. I felt some blinkenlights were needed  Each of the four installed control desks contains a dashboard, electronic controls, vehicle controls and a camera display. They glow in the dark by means of an atomic nightlight, and can provide useful illumination by turning on the dashboard’s dome lights. Here’s a view with all curtains drawn and cameras active:

I’m surprised that you only have 3000L of stuff in storage, I would expect more after what was probably a whole year or scavenging and vehicle building.

Heh, well, I already have a static base where I’ve stored everything I’ve collected. Other than some tools, food & ammunition I didn’t see any need to transfer much to the Ursa III, since I was going out to scavenge anyway. Most of what’s carried has been picked up after she became mobile, some ~30 in-game days ago.

Ah, I thought you didn’t have a static base given URSA III’s size and equipment.

A fair assumption, but to be honest after I stumbled upon a military bunker with an autodoc quite early in this game I had sort of decided to try the static base / faction camp style, so I spent a lot of time equipping my bunker with a water well, lighting and electricity, and even an underground tunnel to an island cottage, which - and I did not know this when I started digging the tunnel - happens to cross an underground railway! I had raided a lab and found a mech suit I didn’t know what to use for (seems stupidly underpowered?), so I used it to smash rocks, almost 20 overmap tiles (single line, of course). Imagine my surprise when after days of digging I suddenly burst through into an underground railway tunnel! I have explored this on a single tile electric vehicle and found entrances to two labs and one Hub 01, but have yet to enter either (though I have been to the Hub 01 location overground, and performed a mission for the intercom). This is a weird and wonderful game.

Building a gargantuan vehicle had been on my mind for a long time though, and since I was so fortunate with the great base location, when I found I had an abundance of resources and time I decided to do that instead. This was about mid/late summer. The last time I played I only had the idea of building a mega mobile base about a year later, and I was in a much less sheltered location. This is where my current base is:

Pretty ideal! And yes, I do intend to build a faction camp there as well :upside_down_face:

Congratz on the Ursa, i would never have had the patience, i love the shape as well, because it’s kind of simillar to a star citizen ship that i forgot the name right now lol, i think it’s called constellation andromeda… But anyway, maybe you could take a screenshot using the chibi-ultica tileset? I was kind of curious to see it in a more familiar tileset, since i never used this tileset you use.

Sure, here you go:

This tileset doesn’t have my custom sprites though, so the storage units and control desks show up as some generic fallback tile…

lmao, that puts things in perspective, it’s just gigantic, my biggest vehicle ever was basically an improved RV, which is half the size of this one and 1/3 wide? It’s been years since i played a hardcore run like this, so really impressive!

She has a footprint of 11x30 tiles, compared to an RV’s 5x9, and uses 296 tiles vs. 45 - the equivalent of six and a half RVs. It’s been quite tedious at times… I posted a list of materials earlier, but I’ve since increased the number of wheels (when trying to solve the drag problem) - here’s an updated list:
