Okay, after updating my game to the latest experimental (version 1958) and playing with my not-so-old character, I’ve got frostbite in my hands due to the suddenly low temperatures at spring ( Flurries -20C). Okay, I’m fine with that.
But now, when I went to sleep on a makeshift bed (wearing the sleeping bag), I was woken up by a strong pain (Pain 20), with the hands still with the “frostbite” status. I tried to sleep again, only to get woken up again with even more intense pain (around 39-40) and the stats being even worse. Then I tried to sleep once more, but it was useless, because I would wake up again and again.
Why is this happening? I have like over 90 warmth in all body parts, hands included (thanks to the sleeping bag), but I still have my hands frostbitten.
EDIT: not sure if this will help, but I’m playing tha game with long seasons (91 days/season) and right now I’m at day 18.
How old is not-so-old?
And yeah, I’m getting -20 in spring, too.
I created my char at the experimental version 1900 or so, I can’t quite remember. But still it was recent, like a week ago.
There were a lot of season and weather related changes in the last week, I recommend starting afresh.
Well, I must say that I’ve managed to fix the issue just before you said that. It seems that I needed to sleep with the sleeping bag on next to a lit fire AND with some warm hand clothing.
In other words, all my stats are back to normal and everything is fine. But still thanks for the advice, though.
Hey, I in no way want to pressure anyone, but those extreme temperatures are pretty game-breaking.
Just have -23° in my first night in spring, regular season length.
So, take this as a friendly reminder.
Yeah, I’m working on making winters softer without taking out all the challenge. Current won’t be the weather in the next stable. Don’t worry.
I disagree. The winter should be something to be feared. Especially the first one.
I think it would be better to somehow add an exception to the first season that prevents the temperature from dropping below 0C.
Fresh survivors (and especially fresh players) should not be confronted with freezing environments right at the start of the game.
And just making all winters milder would ruin the challenge winter brings.

You stopped reading before “without”, didn’t you? Also, right now winters are closer to polar than to freezing. Figuring out how to generate credible numbers is harder than it looks. =3
Well I think at the moment our character can take pretty low tempretures (relatively) . So one could nerf the chars tollerance to cold and then move to more realistic wheather.
Could a simple fix just to start us a week into spring? I imagine the week rollback to fix the timing/season error is now making it “end of winter” right when we start the game (literally it is 1F and drizzling, just started.)
In one sense, the game is doing exactly what it should be doing. I think we’re the ones expecting it to not be borderline right when it is the end of winter (it does snow sometimes, as well as cold snaps where I live in spring).
I dunno about everyone else, but I’ve found that starting as a tailor profession with at least 3 survival fixes this. All ya gotta do is start off wrecking the crap out of your shelter and salvaging everything, then make yourself a full warm set of clothing, a makeshift bed, and a blanket. Just make sure all your parts are in green most of the day, set that blanket down on the bed, and you should never get frostbite. negative temperatures no problem at all.
I use this start and add in points in unarmed combat/melee/dodge for a taekwondo fighter, some good strength and dex, and some good leg/arm armor. Get some basic torso/head/feet/hand armor as you go.

If it only works with one build, it’s broken.
The -26C and snow you have at the moment day 1 also makes avoiding some kind of frostbite almost impossible
While this exists, I’ve taken to starting in Summer to give myself some time before some Stark tells me their house motto. Summer has its own perils, of course, but the temperature is at least survivable at the start.
Wearing enough armor to stave off the hordes is another matter.
I must say I even like the extreme cold more than the extreme hot, because it allows me to wear a metric fuckton of armour which is nice for melee fighters.
Also, taking 3 levels in tailoring is now really just mandatory, as it lets you ignore most of the frostbite issues.

fuckton of armour give fuckton of encumbrance
Not neccessarily. Wearing a trenchcoat, a long shirt, underwear and a small bag can leave you at little encumbrance while providing much storage.
On the other hand, in summer, when you melt away as soon as you even look at your trenchcoat, you have to reduce armour to a absolute minimum.
I just noticed, that in those cold winter night, when some zombie tries to hit me through my reinforced clothing they may fail quite often.
Ok. New weather values have been merged. Now it should be much more survivable. Let me know if you still find it too hard or too easy. It will apply retroactively to old saves. No need to start a new one, but if you do, tell me if the start is more reasonable.
