Temperature insanity

I just started in spring with -4 C in a snow flurries storm with a fuckton of fungaloids outside my shelter(i blame you for them too :D). Ill take the challenge, but it seems kinda harsh for a new player just stepping into the game with basic settings.

It shouldn’t go much lower than that and I decreased the prominence of cold days a lot, so soon it will be hotter. From my experience, -4C is ok. You may get cold, but you won’t die from it unless you stay still for days. Thirst will kill you faster.
If this is not the case, tell me, but I’m pretty sure the current cold at the start is super mild.

A quick check of records for Boston shows that March 20th should have an average low of 36F/2C and an average high of 45F/7C - This would be the first day of spring.
First day of summer shifts to: Low: 62F/17C and High: 77F/25C.

This is, of course, not counting any effects of Cataclysmic proportion - Dimensional rifts, nuclear bombings, air strikes, etc. Spring seems appropriate - Summer, on the other hand, seems excessively hot still with my recent test reaching a peak of 109F on the first day.

That might be just luck. In my tests summer highs are normally below 80F.
In fact, it’s luck beyond what should be possible. Are you using 1996 or higher? Send me your save.

If you found some good data sources for historical temperature, care to share them?

Whether they’re good sources is debatable. As I said, it was a quick check.

Caveat: I don’t know whether these sites use extensive advertising. I block ads.

The first site has a breakdown of cloud cover and precipitation, which could also be useful for tweaking the weather.

This was the first day of spring:

Another site with an overview of monthly averages:

Efimero - Apologies, but I had already deleted that save. If I encounter that situation again, I’ll zip it up and get it to you ASAP.

According to your source, about 1/10 years have lows around -4C in Boston (it says 26F, which is -3.3C, close enough).
DDA doesn’t generate “average weather”, it generates pseudorandom weather that falls within the bounds of what happens in reality, which means some games it’ll be lower than average, some it’ll be higher than average.
What we expect is that temperatures mostly stay within the dark and light grey bands on that chart, and never get very far outside it, it doesn’t need to stay right at the average.

It sounds like it’s working as intended, from this single data point anyway.

Like I said, spring seemed to be at an appropriate level. Once food decay is less extreme, I’ll shift my attention to testing summer temperature ranges.

Nobody has explained how food decay is unexpectedly fast. I did my best to keep the same decay speed as before, but I have no proper tested data or an easy way to test it (I have no time at the moment to do the extensive tests that would require).
If somebody can provide data on how food is expected to decay and how it currently does, fixing it should be just a matter of changing the decay factor, which is a single number.

well i soon will have summer so i will tell how this look and decay is nothing for me (over 600kg of meat jerky)

Meat jerky doesn’t decay (at least in Cata)

Was this supposed to be fixed in version 2004? Day 3 of Spring (on 30-day seasons) and I have had three days in a row where the lows during night have been -6C each time, and the highs have never gone above 10C.

It’s been tough, but not unbeatable… And at least we are not dropping to < -20C on the first night, which is a great improvement!

It is no longer a game-breaking issue though, so I don’t mind if this is ‘good enough’.

-6 is not -25, so we’re fixed IMHO.

Yeah, that was the intention. I did my best to keep winters challenging, but that means the first days of spring have to be a bit cold.
What I did in the update, though, is change the ratio of cold days in the year, so winters should be cold for less time. That also means summers will be hot for more time. It’s a tradeoff, but I think coupled with the general reduction of extreme weathers it should be fine.

Now, on your case, you have 30 day seasons. That means it will take twice as long for you to go through the year, which means you take twice as long to leave the cold days at th beginning of spring. Still, as I’ve said before, -6C is not enough to straight up kill you with frosting. It might be wise to stay awake some nights, though, since the way the cold kills you in cdda is through reducing your body temperature while sleeping. Dramatically. If you can manage to stay awake, you will not suffer so much from the cold.

Interestingly, that means it can be a valid strategy to sleep during the day, since it’s warmer. Let me know how it works out for you, though. I’m watching. =3

well summer is hot but still normal just i need to wear less clothing

So it’s been about a week without an update on this matter. Does this mean you all consider this is no longer an issue?

Its been college hell for me, so I haven’t gotten to play much. Can’t say anything for the others, though.

Spring seems fine (harsh at start, but that’s fine, no crazy temperatures) for me, I will report on other seasons as I get to them.
