Proper campfires?

I was cold, so I made a fire with a piece of splintered wood and a bush. The fire then spread to the tile I was standing on and burned me, so I stood next to the smaller fire. I inhaled far too much smoke to be healthy. This isn’t working, I’m going to kill myself with fire.
A smaller fire didn’t harm me for standing near it, but it didn’t do much to warm me up.

So how do I warm up without harming myself?

Either get clothing or stand a few tiles away from it. Usually 2 is ample. I’m not sure how far the heat from a tile goes though. If you have enough lighting there are usually magma rifts if you explore the sewers enough. Those are always warm.

You can put more than one piece of clothing on each body part. It is in fact unlimited except by letters, and by weight.

if you light a fire on a bush it spreads to 3x3 and the smoke goes farther. i do this to make sure the fire doesn’t go out.

would be nice to able to use rocks and such to build a proper campfire.

other than a stove, any other way to make a fire inside? i found the metal tank hard to find and the parts to craft it even harder to get.

Braziers will also hold fire and work best as a portable method. For indoors fire in version .5 (might be in .4 as well, I don’t remember) you can build a fireplace out of a ton of rocks and some pretty simple tools that will hold fire in place.

You can also dig a shallow pit and drop the stuff in there before lighting it on fire. The fire won’t spread out of the shallow pit.

Braziers and wood stoves require welded metal pieces that you might not be able to find easily, but they also have the advantage of working indoors.
