Launchpad Translations

It looks like there are two groups using Launchpad to translate:

Two questions:

(1) Who’s managing these translations? Can we merge the groups? They both seem quite active, it seems like it would be better to have them both in the same place.

(2) What do people think about using Launchpad for other languages as well?

I’ll probably try to make this one the official one going forwards. I’m setting up automatic updates from github, so that .pot file updates should happen automagically. I’ll also create a branch there for the upcoming stable version when it lands.

Feel free to contribute translations there. Except for the Russian and Chinese ones, for those keep using the other sites for now. When they hit 100% completion, i’ll look at pulling all of them together.

I don’t mind Launchpad for the French translation, but I have no idea how to use it (I haven’t looked into how to use it either).

I’ve seen something similar already, and this looks great. It’s clearly a thing that derives from OpenOffice and the various plugins Apache sorted out, umkay?
Since I’m the little piggy amongst 20 milion people that understand serb-croat, in these forums, I sincerely have little use of it here. But I will synchronise with all you guys and make sumth’n of the tools, and the means you prefer. Altough, the ability to carry portions or the whole work with myself is my preference. I’m just saying - there are many of you handling one translation file altogether, maybe you should divide it up and set some goals(!)

From what i can tell, if there’s already an official group, it is as simple as “make an account, choose your language, start translating”. Someone needs to keep the .pot file up to date with the one in the github repository, but the same file is used for all the translations. So as long as one group is keeping it up-to-date, any language can be translated there. If there are already translations for a language, they can be imported quite easily.

But right now there are two groups, so it’s uncertain where to add more languages.

Doing it manually is fine for the case of a single translator. The Cataclysm-DDA repository on github will still be the official place for merging translations. Even if there is more than one translator it still is quite easy to manage via github, but it requires the translators to know how to use git and github, which i think can be quite confusing for non-coders.

My native language is English (NZ), but i also speak French, and a smattering of Japanese, German and Spanish ;). Not enough to confidently translate, but enough to appreciate most translation issues.

I made another Launchpad Translations site.

Go there to translate all languages except for Russian and Chinese. For Russian and Chinese, use the sites in the first post above, for now.

I’ll take the translations from this site every so often and commit them to the github repo. Actually, anyone can do that any time they want. But i’ll keep an eye on it.

I’m still setting the code hosting up, but the translation interface will remain the same, and no translations should be lost. Some might become outdated when the code itself changes, but that goes with translating any continuously developing project :). I’ll make a branch for the next stable release when it comes out, so that will give a solid target, but the vast majority of the translatable strings should be unchanged between now and then, so don’t let that stop you from translating.

There are still issues with poor support for gendered nouns, but fixing that is a complex issue, so it won’t happen before the next release. Please work around it as best as possible. We’re not yet aiming for perfect grammar in Cataclysm-DDA. Far from it, even with the English ;).

I want to be able to run an official code mirror, and also create official translation branches for stable releases. I was having trouble communicating with the maintainer of translations.launchpad.net/cataclysm-dda so in the end it was easier to set up another project.
