It was a dark night several weeks after my survivor, Jenny Cardex, escaped her home in the middle of an infested city. She had built up some supplies, storing them all in the bathroom of what used to be a farm-house that she turned into a survival shelter. In the middle of this room was a brazier that she used so she could see while crafting various objects. It was a night like any other, her moral was high from a combination of music and ‘a certain item’ that made her feel much better. While humming a tune and stitching together a duffel bag, it never crossed her mind that keeping a pile of ammunition only a few inches away from a fire could possibly be a bad idea.
Boom!
She never expected the large explosion that crippled her left arm and right leg, and before she could recover her senses half her home was in flames and all of her supplies were lost. She ran out into the rain, only being able to grab a small bit of food and her clarinet, turning to watch her house burn to the ground due to such a stupid mistake on her part. Without any guns at all, and no hand-to-hand or weapon skills to speak of, she realized her situation had gone from comfortable to dire in an instant.
Of course, when it rains, it pours, and out of the darkness she could see a set of beady eyes getting closer to her. A bear had chosen this moment of all times to try to make a snack out of her. She walked as fast as she could over to the only building still standing, the barn, hoping to shut the large doors and hide inside until the animal lost interest. Unfortunately, still stunned and in shock from recent events, she didn’t realize she was standing directly under the doors when she pulled the lever.
Splat
The door came down square on her back, smashing several of her vertebrate in an instant and leaving her helpless against the hungry bear that was only a few feet away. A smile came across her face as she stared into the sky, a trickle of blood running down her lip, the rain washing it away into the cold dirt. The last thoughts that ran through her mind as her consciousness faded were “I lost the game.”
Also I keep forgetting ‘run’ is an option now.
