Draw Your Cataclysms
I’m pretty sure that Vogun is now the current winner of most electricity puns in a single post. Once I get discharged from Skybreaker hospital, I’ll need to make sure I amp prepared for what might come next.

Sorry, I saw what was going ohm in this thread and I couldn’t resist.
Did you see the mystery scrape last page?

I see an injured survivor wiping blood away from his mouth, with a bashed up, bullet-riddled van in the background.

Nice. I do however don’t like it when sometimes on forums the image works but instead of showing the actual image it shows the image icon.

I’m not late am I?

Edit: This isn’t exactly Cata related, but I had to put this up here.

These 2 folks here were conjured up by weeks of walking to school while listening to music.
Thinking up scenarios and characters I believed fit the bill. These 2 come from a ‘Civil War Within A City’ based scenario and are usually together.
I’m facing one problem though, I can’t figure out names to give them. I’m open to suggestions.

Wow. Also it seems alot of people think the thing in the background is a gun.

Often the case when the forum you’re on is based around survival in an apocalypse.
Guns are valuable tools in accomplishing survival.

But bear in mind that was just a random scrape I found while working with my dad. Also I’m planning on posting my own drawing of it later.

I am aware

But I’m surprised no one has taken up any discussion over the 2 characters I drew.
If anyone knows who Rise Against and All That Remains are, those are who I’ve been listening to.

Woo! First image post!
Anyway, hope you aren’t blinded by the horrible artwork

Current Survivor:

His name is Joseph Carver. Still alive after 15 days of me not knowing what I am doing…

As a bonus, character from my story that I’m working on:

He’s a cyborg. Actually. he’s more machine than man at this point, as he had to be rebuilt after an explosion. He’ll be the leader of an upcoming faction.

Any advice/criticisms are very much welcome. Also, I normally draw on paper and then scan, so the image quality might be meh at times…

Nice job on your first attempt.
When I looked at the survivor, I was like: “Holy sweet cheesus, What happened to his arms?!”
You’ve got some potential but did the most common mistake of drawing things directly right off the bat.
Protip: You ever seen the circles method? You start your character as simple circles where the head and joints are, very lightly, then get the body shape drawn, after that you get to add all the details and fancies. It may take a good bit longer, but trust me its worth it when you see what you get in the end.
Another tip; while you’re drawing, Don’t be afraid to study yourself. Look at how your arms reach and bend, how they appear in relation to your body, same thing with legs. These have helped me a lot when making progress in my doodles!
Good luck & have fun -Gabe Newell

Edit: Wow I typed a lot, hope I don’t come off as rude. It’s really late where I am!

I have heard of this method before, but I’ve never really tried using it. Might have to try it on my next piece. The arms have always been the hardest part for me. You either get them way too short, or way too long.

Also, you didn’t seem rude at all. I asked for criticism, and your points are quite valid. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Yay more stuff.

Oh thank goodness, and you’re welcome!

Now, I’ve added a couple more guys to the roster of “Music Induced Characters”

2 more guys, and I actually made some names for them! From left to right:
Nepovinoveniye (Defiance), Istseleniye (Healing), Zashchita (Protection), Bezumiye (Insanity)

Protection came from multiple listenings of Rise Against - Zero Visibility
And Insanity came from multiple listenings of Celldweller - Eon (Paul Udarov Remix)

All names I end up making now-a-days are just traits and actions translated to other languages, and using their English pronunciation. Feedback? Feel free!

@rjtrains welcome aboard!
I get accustomed to using the rest of the body as references for how long things should be! When at a person’s side: Hand generally rests halfway between hip and knee. Elbow generally rests just above hip. When not at side: I still use that reference and eyeball it. If the person’s elbow is shoulder-height and it doesn’t look like they can bend their own arm to touch their shoulder, I redraw it longer. You learn that how a body moves can help you determine it’s proportions just as much as anything.

I draw undersketches/circles under most of my stuff too, but I’ve been drawing my simpler toons for so long that I just draw a shittier toon underneath instead these days. They uh. Don’t exactly have elbows to help with with proportions rules, they follow more chibi proportions minus the anime. XD There are many ways to do art, but if you can draw semi-realism it seems to inform and improve everything else with it regardless.

/wall o text complete

EDIT WALL INCOMPLETE: also never get discouraged, because your style is exactly where we all start on the path to awesome. I get excited every time a newcomer starts drawing, their skills always improve like watching an exponential curve rocketing upward. SO COOL

Wow, Pthalocy. This has already helped even me! The arms to shoulder thing is genious, I’ll be sure to make use it!

I wish I could credit whoever it was that told me that trick, I’m kind of a katamari of sources when it comes to how-I-learned-to-not-suck-at-art.

My road to how-I-learned-to-not-suck-at-art consists of: study what I’ve seen, use what I’ve studied, and commence trial & mostly error.

eh. all tho its not art I felt like telling yall that you are all awesome. keep it up <3

It took me 1 hour to draw this.
it’s a short-toon about defying NULLNESS and earth[sup]NOTHING [/sup]

I lurk here occasionally and paint. Here’s a vehicle I made in my last long-running game (which for me is like 3 weeks in game time). It’s a standard “hippie van” outfitted with a spiked metal ram in the front, armored side boards, wheels off an Armored Personel Carrier, and a security camera (for rear vision) and solar panels mounted on the roof.
