A Newb's Progress (aka : any tips would be fantastic )

so ive been playing game for a while now and i think i am doing pretty good as i am on day 30 (the game says 8 days because i update it often ) and i have one hell of an organized stash :

this is my base , ive barricaded everything but two front doors and one back door and surrounded everything with spiked pits :

today , while i was going out with my shopping cart dissassembling cars and getting their parts , ive been really REALLY pissed off by zeds to the point where a hulk hit me , ripped 3 of clothes apart and sent me to 80+ pain , luckly i always take some medical supplies with me (1 first aid kit , 2 bandages , 20 aspirin ) so i swallowed like 5 aspirins and ran to the forest and left my cart behind , went home , got patched up , slept , and swore revenge !
picked up a law ive been saving for this moment , worn my trusty shotgun , holstered my glock and dropped my knife spear , it was time
i went there and saw the hulk just right there about 10 tiles from my cart and law’d him , bits of meat went everywhere and rekt everything and everyone else with my ithca
right then , i planted the flag of freedom (a bookshelf ) in the middle of town announcing it has been liberated !
map :

and to end it here are my options :

i know this just regular stuff in CDDA but i really enjoyed playing it ! ( also : any improvemets / tips would be good )

are you playing static spawns and/or wander spawns?

Static + hordes

nice progress .you could add some funiture in cellar for aestetic and storage purposes.

thanks , and yeah , ive been training my construction skill to do that and ive actually gotten a car running but i still need reinforcments , luckily , next door there is a tank which means free composite armor for life !
also : military composite rams playa

Looks like a decent setup to me. Usually at this point in the game it’s indeed supercar time for me. That or exhaustively explore literally every house in the city and hoard everything.

by now i usually just ignore houses unless i need something like nails or duct tape and just go to stores and such
not related but the vending machines in gas stations and such are like food heaven ! they have more food than grocery stores

Sometimes, but it’s all junk (except the jerky), and most of it isn’t very filling.

As to houses, I start getting thorough with houses when I want to find rare drops in spider basements.

That actually bothers me a bit btw. The food in vending machines being such junk. As usually it has pretty high kcal values. It just has little other nutrients.

I know it is done for game balance. But potato chips (irl 500 kcal per 100 grams easily) having 8 nutrition and an apple 75kcal per 100 grams has 16 nutrition, just ticks me off a bit.

Yeah, it’s a little funky how the nutrition system is done. But, there is a disconnect between games and reality, and I accept that as part of the disconnect. As someone who is trying to put on mass, I wish that healthy food had more calories than it does, sometimes. It’s hard to pack away that many calories when there is junk food that is more calorie dense.

Pemmican, seeds, nuts, and fruit leather are decent vending machine drops. Nachos can be crafted to make great meals. Some of the candy can be used to craft granola.

There are two great and wonderful things that can easily be found in basements. One is a basement that I call “The Last Stand” which has a bunch of crates, sand bags, and a bunch of .308 shells. Often found in such basements is the incredible, edible fire axe, which is a supremely excellent weapon, especially in the beginning of the game. Many of survivors that I have had only have lived because they gained early access to a fire axe. In fact, fire stations are a prime target for me, especially as the turnout armor is particularly resistant against zombie bites, and is transcendent early in the game.

The second basement type is the gun basement. You probably won’t find anything super good, but ammo is plentiful. A shotgun is a great emergency weapon, and has saved me from mi-gos, brutes, hulks, shockers, and animals on more than several occasions.

tl;dr loot the basements for fire axes, fire arms, and ammo. Food and tools too, maybe.

Speaking of basements, the variety is so low!
Are they hardcoded or json’d, and who do I send maps to to get merged? (because I’m bad at git)
I can think of a ton of generic designs that make sense sizewise (the default generic two-bench basement and most other basements are nearly as big as a church interior…) and make a bit more sense designwise (not a big square).
I’m totally willing to make more, but I want to know how worth the effort it is. Just having some variety of generic basements would be a great step away from finding 3 “last stand” basements and 6 “gun nut” basements in the same small town.

I really wouldn’t know about that. I know that for the main developers, their priority has been squashing bugs and making features work. The garage section of this forum would be a better source to inquire about such things. I know that I would be happy with more basement varieties as well. I would be willing to brainstorm, but I am not interested in coding anything.

I’ll head there, anyway, wish me luck!

The other handy thing I’ve found in basements is books. Sometimes you’ll get a mini-library down there with some handy reading material. Also helpful early game.

Mid-to-late game, I don’t see alot of need to bother with houses beyond my compulsion to loot every single last one and hoard every potentially useful item ever spawned. Most of the loot there is pretty mundane, and after your consumable supplies hit “lifetime” quantities, it’s nothing particularly interesting or that you really need to get by.

i never bothered with fortifiaction of my base but nice work, i suggest making some lockers in basement to increase storage (7000 of locker vs 4000 of bare floor)

Yesssssss. Organize everything and make appropriate containers for everything. Let the apocalypse be uncluttered.

Jesus Christ.

I’m actually simplifying my gameplays more & more, i’m close to just dumping everything on the floor and use advanced inventory to sort through item categories and then move them to tiles around the center one.

But… don’t you see what you’ve missed?

Nah, I’m just kidding. You probably have everything down there. Everything.

Everything. Like, on that run, I managed to have about 2000 units of human flesh stored on the ice lab section where all the perishable goods are stored - and that’s not including the human cuisine also stored in that place.

I basically know the area well enough that I can transfer tens of thousands of volume from my survivor’s truck down to the floor below in about 15 minutes - though partially because I made use of a cargo dimension wheelbarrow for quick hauling to containers. Heck, I even have container space down there to store damaged goods.

That place… looks epic…
