Your choice of food
It pleases me that like 3/4 of the food in this thread is stuff I contributed.

I am chefzombie.
We are blessed by your healthy foods, Great Zombie Overlady.

I’m mainly surviving on flour (wheat), human based food and protein powder + tomatoes, strawberries and blueberries. I have so many Jerk jerkies and dehydrated human meat that I could survive for at least a year on that without searching for other stuff.

I have no shortage to human meat thanks to all those stupid NPCs that mean that they have to pick a fight with a insect/alpha/beast/spider mutant (mainly spider but thresh for alpha), that is fully clad in survivor armor and uses charge rifle/pneumatic bolt driver/cal 308. rifles + a katana for good measure.

Between light eater trait and recycler unit CBM, my insect abomination doesn’t require regular food. He gets all the nutrition and quenchy-ness he needs from soda.

foul poison. a thousand colds shall befall ye

I’ve survived 35 days and counting, not a single cold or other illness. Except for that time I decided to kill a fungal tower with no environmental protection…

Soda is awesome, therefor yoyr argument is invalid

I mostly eat granola and ants.

How dare you feast upon my insect brethren!?

With a baseball bat, and a full suit of chitin armor from my previous meal.

GG.
In the newer experimentals eating raw meat has a chance to give you various parasites. Although stable versions have parasites too but I think some newer parasites have been added in 0.B or some other recent version. I ate lots of raw meat and got hemolytic parasites, my health went negative, my character stopped healing (I thought it was all a bug) and I had to rely on lots of bandages/First Aid kits or my repair nanobots bionic for healing even small amount of damage. It was only after I accidentally used some anti-parasitic drug on myself (it was supposed to give you some signs if you were infected with a parasite) and then I discovered that it was not a bug. Its good that I used a long ranged weapon then, if I had been using melee my character would’ve been dead by now. After that I took 2 vitamins per day and then I repaired my hidden health stat after about 20 days. Now I always take 1 vitamin everyday, after all it doesn’t cause an addiction nor its addictive and it can protect from ambient diseases and whats more, you can heal lots of damage while asleep.
Rather than prioritizing morale, I tend to prioritize health, because morale from food doesn’t last long at all and colds fucking suck (I still get colds from time to time, but it’s not unusual for my body to throw them off in a single day). Herbal tea is my favourite beverage (unless I’m going to read some books or I’m playing a particularly sleepy character or something, then it’s coffee), but I also keep sealed jars of kompot around for when I’m out of herbs. Lately I’ve been eating deluxe scrambled eggs because I got a bunch of cracklins after rendering some fat into lard; it uses up the cracklins and the eggs I have in my fridge, and it’s healthy.

I’m also fond of the crafted soups (meat, fish, woods, vegetable) for the health benefits. Protein shakes are also extremely healthy, and are good for both hunger and thirst, and they don’t spoil. Pies are a good way to use up a bit of leftover meat or fruit, and have a small nutrition value per serving while granting a health boost in spite of their classification as snacks; they’re great if you have the recycler bionic (like I do) or Light Eater or the like and want to pack more health into your meals. Granola’s a good travel ration with a health boost: I should probably sell my pemmican to the refugee camp and make granola instead. I also eat pasta at home sometimes: lasagna and the spaghettis are a bit ingredient-intensive, but are healthy, and will make your survivor happy if you have a pasta extruder, as I do. (I just wish they weren’t so rare. I’ve only ever seen one, and it dropped off a random zombie at a mansion, rather than having a logical placement like a restaraunt or pizza parlor.)

Seriously, people, the cooking system is there and it’s good for you.
I too prioritize health boosting foods over morale boosting foods (after all you can boost your morale instantly using mp3 players, and I don’t have a need for all those stacks of batteries). But I don’t rely on them, instead 1 vitamin a day and permanently wearing a filter mask (I started wearing it since I got those pesky parasites which reduced my health and I still wear it) protects me from most diseases.

Yum.

Mouth encumbrance hurts your run speed, though. :frowning:

Who needs to run? Well sometimes I do need to run, but most of the times I just have to improvise  , fighting a handful of zombies is better than cold or influenza (but I don’t think I need to wear it now since I’ve started taking vitamins daily), even better when you just raid at night. Most of the time I just drive through towns and raid at night so it doesn’t seem to affect my gameplay. But it might hurt a little, in the beginning.

Edit: I’ve started day-raiding to improve my cutting skills, (right now my bashing skill is 8 and cutting is 7; I just need to make them 10; extreme task, i think it is), especially when the town I’m having my base is running out of zombies (zombies do spawn but they just keep themselves in the lower part of the town).

Recent rampant ant population in my game steered me towards woods soup and smoked meat. So much smoked meat. I had two charcoal kilns churning out charcoal for about a whole season non-stop, I think. Someone needs to stop me from clear-cutting dandelions, because they can be used in woods soup.

Speaking of ants, their eggs provide insane nutrition, as I just stumbled upon an ant hill. Couldn’t find the queen in the tunnels below, though. So many eggs… like a scene from an Alien movie… Never attacked an ant along the way, just waltzed in there. Not one shit was given on behalf of the ants to my presence. On a more mysterious note, prior to entering the ant tunnels, I killed and butchered a bunch of zombies nearby. The thing was, when I left the tunnels at night, and slept in a nearby house, the butchered zombie meat was gone in the morning, overnight. Usually it takes a bit longer than that, right? I was thinking maybe the nearby roving ants cleaned them up. If so, that begs the question if ant flesh is just recycled tainted meat… Am I what I eat? Am I the thing that my meal eats?

I love woods soup; it’s so filling and healthy and hits two major food groups. If you want to save some dandelions for things like dandelion wine or tea, though, you can also forage in underbrush for wild vegetables or strip blackjack oaks for acorns which can be used in woods soup after being cooked into acorn meal. I have something like 200 handfuls of acorns lying around.

On the matter of ant eggs, they do provide a lot of nutrition, don’t they? But it’s so much as to be total overkill unless you’re bloody starving. You can dehydrate a single ant egg into 100 egg powder, though, which’ll let you get rid of the gross factor and stretch the nutrition out over several meals (as well as likely multiplying it by a good half-again).

Oh, wow! Did not know that. Well, then. That right there is a game changer. Looks like I’ll be snatching some ant fetuses soon and turn them into delicious baby ant powder. My god… I should… I should carry shopping cart parts with me into the tunnels and assemble a vehicle just to have some assistance… There’s hundreds of them eggs… Hell, I’ll build a golf cart there if necessary. I… I don’t want to kill the queen anymore. Must protect the ants.

Yes… All hail the queen! Insect-y-ness intensifies

Eh, queen is flammable. Though it’s so much easier to drive to a swamp than it is to clear out an ant house.

Though now I’m wondering if ant or frog tastes better…

The queen tasted great =3
