What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

I just did something very stupid, and it worked.

Trying to navigate my motorbike through a few squares of forest to another road I eventually get it stuck. Can’t go forward, can’t manage to back out.
After exhausting all my other options I decide to just set the bloody trees on fire. Wait around for a while, turn on my thermal dissipation bionic and ride through the raging inferno to freedom.
Surprisingly, this did not end in my triple-gasoline-tanked motorbike exploding in a glorious fireball.

Well sure the bike blew up. It blew up so good that it put you into a real life coma!
You’re currently dreaming, hallucinating heavily.

I had to do this in my severely underpowered electric car.

Minus the bionic.

Why did I have to do this? Because apparently an electric car with a single standard motor has enough power to go forward at 30 mph, but not enough to go backwards AT ALL.

My elf character managed to escape the burning sarcophagus and head back to my base camp. Decided to start putting together a quick turret cart to make sure I have more firepower to start peeking into towns (Which is tantamount to suicide due to 10x spawn settings).

Ran into a bunch of vehicles and salvaged the parts for it, batteries, casters, controls, a horn, a solar panel; the only thing missing was a turret. Started wandering around for a vacuutainer so I could piece together an NX-17 to mount.

Ran into a FEMA camp and honked the horn on the Guncart. Zombies came running towards the fence but couldn’t break through, making it easy to pick them off with archery. No vacuutainer, but one of the zombie soldiers dropped a Fusion rifle, the excitement lasted just until the point where I realized they used fusion packs instead of battery power now.

Picking through the remains though; netted me some 8x40 caseless rounds and an Automagnum. This thing is absolutely insane; the ammo is equivalent to a high powered rifle round in terms of damage but far exceeds it in armor piercing and recoil.

The icing on the cake is the fact that its ammo can also be handcrafted.

Chemset and Press is located on the mobile base.
Acid can be harvested via funnel.
Plastic is everywhere.
Oxidizer can be obtained from bleach, common in labs.
Lead comes as a by-product of disassembling ammo I don’t use, the powder goes into explosive bolts.

The only problem is obtaining incendiary components. That mostly comes from disassembling ammo; incendiary can also be made but it requires SUGAR, which is rare outside of cities. (And oddly uncommon even in them)

You can extract sugar from natural sources (i.e. fruit) or manufactured sources (soft drinks or cheap wine) using your chemistry set and some lye, which can also be made using your chemistry set and some charcoal, which can be made in a charcoal kiln.

Have fun, and enjoy the :bangbang:SCIENCE:bangbang:

Started a new game on 3x spawn and was leading zombies into burning bushes so I could beat them to death while they burned.
I really shouldn’t have done that with the zombie soldier, on reflection. With my legs gone the other zombies found me easy pickings.

Cata is so hard!

I started a new character and took four measly steps towards the shelter basement, when I spotted several flaming eyes about 5 tiles away out the north window, they promptly began disintegrating the evac shelter. Apparently, the RNG did not like my latest character design.

This was my worst spawn recently, it’s pretty bad because on the west and south sides there are tons of swamps, to the east is fungals, and north is flaming eyes and a city…

How exactly do you deal with flaming eyes safely if they turn up?

I don’t think you can. They can see you through walls and darkness, so you can’t sneak up on them. Their “stare” attack has more range than most firearms. I’m not sure how strong they are in melee. My strategy is to just avoid them until you have a good weapon, or get a car and run them over. Either one gets you stared at, an you just have to deal with that.

Does the stare’s range exceed a sniper rifle?

I have a Savage I’m working on modding to become something very nasty.

Regarding melee: all they can do is stare and move. They’ve got a lot of HP but that’s it. Just get in there, hit hard, hit fast, and keep hitting.

I’ve melee’d and arrowed eyes before. I’m not getting why they are so challenging for other people.

I’ve killed a flaming eye straight off the spawn bat once.

They are not so challenging by themselves, but the teleglow they give is anywhere from annoying to deadly. I’ve been killed by the random teleport twice. Once into a wall, once into the zombies I was kiting.

Well, today just got interesting.

I upgraded to the latest experimental…

Suddenly all the Dayquil and Nyquil cannot be picked up because they are “liquid”. (Anyone know how I can quickly fix this?)

And I just found a huge basement full of guns. I’m having trouble picking which to use. Any advice appreciated.

I already had a Savage 11F, G3, and SCAR-L. (And M1911 and a pneumatic bolter).

I found UZIs, a MAC-10, a mini-14 a weird caseless autoshotgun (no ammo), a Remington 870, and a Saiga.

I also found three(!) G36s and an M14.

Initially I swapped out the Savage and SCAR for a G36 and the M14

But then I met a zombear and some zombies. Tried out the G36… and holy shit the recoil is ludicrous.

My character also keeps firing off completely unwanted bursts thanks to being triggery happy.

What should I be wielding out of this stash? Maybe I was better off with single shot weapons with the SAIGA burst for emergencies.

If only you could’ve dismantled those guns and done something neat with all of the parts.

Carry your 870 and a pistol. Saiga uses too many rounds IMO. Preferably outfit the shotgun with a bayonet so that you have an option if you run out of ammo.

How does a semi-automatic shotgun use too many rounds? lol

It has a 4 round burst mode while the 870 has a 3 round burst mode. I assume he meant that.

I don’t know… The SAIGA has a really nice big magazine which I assume I can use mods on, unlike the 870 which has to be reloaded one shot at a time and has no “mag”.

An insane idea occurs to me though. Can you put an underslung shotgun on your shotgun? Inscribe the words “Yo dawg I herd you like shotguns so I put a shotgun on your shotgun…” on it.

Anyway my main concern is the rifles. I want to have some kind of sniper weapon available. The M14 seems fine for that. But to make use of the .223 ammo I’d like to have a weapon that uses that.

Which is best? The G36 doesn’t seem practical. I mean holy CRAP that recoil. How much could I reduce that via mods?

The few mods that help recoil are the enhanced grip and the adjustable stock. And I don’t think you can put a shotgun on a shotgun, but you can try!

And yes, the m14 is a great choice for long range. But the ammo is a bit scarce…
