What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

And… I’m a dumbass. I was cleaning out my downloads folder and deleted my entire cdda folder and backup folder… there went my best character yet. He last 75 days had Survivors armored scout suit his trusty machete and Sparky his 50k lb cargo tank. R.I.P. in pieces.

Made a new @ after not playing for a month or so. ( One F Jef made me play again)

Started near a super store trying to get some peace there but the Zeds keep pouring out. Kill count over 100 and still have some hours left on the first day.

Ps. Since my last update the game runs so much smoother on my crappy computer, great job!

hmmm… i just found zombie child corpse that dropped crack… that’s kind of… disturbing, though i guess there sure ARE some kids out there in the world who smoke crack… or even sell it…

Words like “metropolis” and “right next to riffid grove” might have been an overestatement but… it was one of the worse starts.
Thats pretty close.

Its got to be the bare minimum for distance. o.o

At least you should have a ready source of distractions

Day 03

New game, again, to test around the new homes I made for spiders.

This character spawned in a 3 house city, and hid in one house until the fires died and looted the corpses on the edge. Running out of town when the sun came up and the body temp outside rose those few precious degrees, he found a humvee on a bridge west. Being a careful planner he was, he had a jar of diesel to fill it with, and smashed off a broken tank.

The next day was spent navigating the edge of nowhere, finding frenades, throwing grenades at roadblocks, eating raw plant offal, catching a parasite, losing his health to booze and said parasite, having a chicken walker chase him down, and, rightfully so, fleeing and catching it in his doorframe. It exploded pain all over his body.

It is morning of day 04, his pain has consistently been in the 40s and 50s, and now Im at a hospital searching for painkillers or antiparsitics. I found a roadmap that says a city is a days drive north and east, so Im heading up there after I get my drugs.

I also have zero books and zero rags to my name. No crafting, no repairs, no good weapon. Ive been using fire and a crate of explosives I found. makeshift crowbar has like 25 kills to its name so far.

Pedit:

ohh yeaa. I knew I was getting (too) frequent hallucinations that lasted for a very short time (as opposed to the 6-8 hours withdrawl symptoms), and lo, I also had frequent muscle cramps.

I flushed out 3 parasites with 1 pill. ewwww, I dare say I was a hive of scum and villany

Just found a house where there was a corpse wearing full mailman gear while there was several zombie dogs around it.

lol

Day 06

Got myself a companion, a relatively unskilled female. We dont have mechanics skill between us.

We stopped by a lab on our way ‘upstate’. There we looted the first level, absolutely packed full of skitterbots and manhacks, and got a map. On the map I found 2 farms in good, solid locations. Maybe I will end up making homes there?

North, we found a small residental neighborhood with a satellite vault city. North and west of that is a larger city, so we went that way. A suddenly worm caused us to skid, into a minefield. Our armored wheels blew off, leaving us stranded by a vault city with no mechanical skill and having just made 2 very loud noises.

Panicing, I fetched some thorozine and dumped most of whatI was carrying. We fought off the closest of the zeds and ran along the forest line. Past an apartment complex and into a nearby house where I found a UTH book. We found a working car with an alarm on it on the next street, which was sparsely populated. While she stabbed things with her pitchfork I jammed the screwdriver desparetely into the ignition. Id like to imagine that it was quite a tense moment before the car finally started and I stopped fiddling with the wires beneath.

Now, I plan to read the book and go find a new humvee because jacks are mean. A pickup will suffice too, as will an SUV. But Id prefer a heavy duty vehicle to build off of.

Recuva my friend, gets back your deleted files for free. A beautiful application all in all.

Clarissa Madrigal, Sheltered Military Survivalist, 5 Days in,

My incredibly weapon-lucky character is stuck on a farm, with all routes out blocked by hordes. The Excavator, my only vehicle with more than 1% fuel, has a dead battery and no alternator. I have Under the Hood, and a car and appropriate tools, and even batteries to give the car a starting boost, but Clarissa is starving and dehydrated, so no days to waste reading skill books.

I use the last fuel in my beater car and in my pickup running over small animals to get some raw meat, just to keep my from dying. This buys me enough time to gather up some firewood and toilet water, and start cooking my dry rice (after I finally stop worrying about how to do it and just try to light a fire). I manage to eat 5 servings of cooked rice, and Clarissa is ecstatic about the hot meal, despite being severely in pain and occasionally blind from the food poisoning from earlier raw meat.

Still thinking this is the end, I bumble into the cluster of tiny tents just south of the farm entrance. I previously went in the little building next to them and found nothing, so I thought they would be equally useless. Turns out they contained a week’s worth of food, mostly preserved, some perishable but fresh, and some purely ingredients (cornmeal, rice, etc). After that I found a gallon jug of rotten milk I had jokingly put in a house’s trash can, so I could actually store a ton of clean water. Lastly, the campsite had lots of logs, so I didn’t have to fight elves giant spiders for some measly sticks (being that I had no axe) to make a fire.

All in all, things are looking quite up. I almost felt bad when I finally picked the lock on a gun safe, which was in a basement full of unsecured assault rifles and ammo, to find it only had a small but very ornate pepperbox pistol. It wasn’t even worth keeping (but I took it anyway), and it felt more like a family heirloom. Lastly, on the topic of guns, it has been a long time since I played Cata, and I am in LOVE with the new aiming system. Using followers as meatshields to get perfectly aimed almost-guarenteed crits on enemies is a beautiful thing. This single 30-round drum mag for my M27 IAR has lasted me through countless fights, with a perfect 100% accuracy and something like 70% OHKs.

My condolences, Kobold.
May Character McSeventy-Fivedays rest in peace.

Try finding a dead fetus in a restaurant kitchen’s trashcan.

Thanks. No biggie though its simple to get to that point once you get past the first few days or week. Though this new character is in a bit of a more insecure position. Popped out of his prepper house after murdering the fool npc that broke in, tried to get a nearby sports car running before booking it for the woods and a near by field campsite. Looted another and found a working motor cycle. Been putting around on it, happened to find a haunted cabin and got cursed with some sort of blindness for a day, I thought that was the end of Nick ‘Havoc’ Parker but it eventually wore off and I was able to finally see to make some water and dinner. Was ambushed by a herd of moose. Turned them all into moose steaks mmm with a nail bat(makes em tender). There was three of them, luckily I was able to kite one of them at a time and the third ran off. Only to return later.

Been riding around looking for tools and weapons and better armor, I hit the jackpot when i stumbled a pon a group of dead soldiers. I put down the only animated one and started looting everything they had. One even had a Basic power armor, now for the herculean task of finding a helmet and the ups cybernetic. Though I do have a plain old UPS that i could slap into it. I may finally actually build my self a base… i say that every time I get into a good position but this time there is no real place to go that isn’t to close to the city of Mount Hope.

Day 09

I drove the car off, and its alarm kept the zombies close at hand, tracking us as the night descended and we began driving up and down roads leaving the city, searching for a car
We found some jack ants, and they destroyed the gas tank; gas bled from the vehicle and soldiers swarmed us. I left my partner for dead, but she caught up.
We fought off the ants who followed us into the darkness. I found a basic repair kit and repaired my damaged weapon.
Finding no respite, we began walking back to the city when my booze ran out. Thorazine, keep me company.
I found a bicycle, I rode it and she rode on the back wheel, likely the pegs. It was neat to see that NPCs can ride the pegs like little urbanites.
We rode up and down the outlying neighborhoods, eventually I found a baseball bat and a parked greyhound bus. Its diesel, and should hold most of what I need it to in its seats until we get a proper wagon.
In the dark we make our way back to the humvee site. hopefully no hordes.
Loaded up, we take off to avoid the encroaching horde of stumbling zombie residents.

We stop at a farm, where I find an excavator
I read up to level 1 mech so I can take the crane with me
A hulk sees my sleeping companion in the dark and tosses her through a window. I jump into the drivers seat and she gets back in. the hulk follows and I drive off with it in, killing it.
We take off and go to a nearby lab, where i mutate a bunch, but get glass jaw so I purify that. i gained a baby tail and strong/dextrous and rough skin in total. meh, not awful
i craft my makeshift welder
The game sucked my NPC and my new buddy into another dimension for 60 seconds. Enough time for the local zombies to get to their position before they suddenly reappeared.
My new buddy has high str and I ran over 1 of their 3 companions because he tried to rob me.
I found a new, guarentted larger city to the north and west, will be working my way up there.
A second lab had a b1 finale, and I got a laser pistol, a fusion rifle, and a laser rifle.
I have no skill in any of those, so I took the ups and the guns and stowed them in favor of a remington with a bayonet on it.

This character is someone Id write a whole thread about.

Are you kidding? That’s a GREAT start - school nearby that you can get to easily, zombies and triffids keeping each other busy, easy source of food and liquid (fluid sacs). That’s a beautiful start!

tfw you get slammed by a zombie hulk through a wall

Day 19

I drove the bus back to a humvee I had previously marked. It needed a new engine and it needed a new battery. Well, turns out the bus had both.
I spent the next 3 days repairing and augmenting the vehicle, using parts from a nearby troop transport and an RV. All told I was level 4 mech and the troop transport is the only thing I still have marked. I got tired of my new companion complaining and not doing stuff, so when he got infected, I let him die, it was tragic.

I have been telling my female homie to teach me to dodge, since when Im wearing all my crap Im unlikely to learn on my own. Not that level 2 dodge and 35 torso encumbrance will synergize, but if I keep raising it as high as I can eventually it will be useful. And, like unarmed, you can always use it if naked. So I do like to have swimming, unarmed, and dodge leveled up to at least 2 or 3, so that if, for some reason, I ever can use it I will.

. . . Not that those conditions are ever met in any game that features skills, though.

I have been reading and looting my way through the cities sparingly. to be honest, Im not lacking any one thing in particular, except a healthy diet. And perhaps skill books. I even have this boom crane stored in back. Im waiting to get a welding rig or at least a real welder before going nuts. usually do.

I just found an imp, so that means that theres a castle or a spire around. Im in a small city, so honestly it could be either.
I found a public works that had a welder, and an eyebot came around. I didnt notice it take pictures of me, but it must have because there was a riotbot coming in as I was leaving. I did give them nightvison, but if they use their abilities in the dark is an open question. They seem to be ‘less capable’ of doing so when their target is in the dark, at the least. For instance, I know a chicken walker from day 1 saw me in the dark, because it chased me to my car, but it didnt shoot or flamer me because I was able to do the usual ‘doorframe smash’ to it. And it exploded its goodness all over me too, but I was not set on fire. So.

I found a space marine helmet, a lobster helmet, and a mint condition army helmet at a copter crash, and I handed those out accordingly. at 26 encumbrance it isnt the cheapest protection around, and it suffers the eye and mouth, as well as limiting what else can be used, but it provides almost unparalelled protection and features. Ive been considering giving it a batterywell for night vison, but honestly its more balanced if you have to encumber yourself to get that. Its not like Doomguy had nightvison in his helmet without additional equipment anyway.

Im going to be looting a church, a pharmacy, and a sport store and then going to the large city north and west. This cluster of 3 cities plus vault town is only bad memories for me. Ive had nothing but trouble here.

You mean a concussion and several broken bones?

Day 28, or THE LAST DAY OF SPRING

Tis the last day of spring, and TIL that dark wyrms can suffocate. I mean, I guess I should had figured that, but this is one of the first times Ive seen it.

Speaking of mines and gas, my female companion Reno has dissappeared. We were traveling down a mineshaft and she was complaining of being tired. I wasnt going to turn this car around just because she had the sleepies and didnt ask when we were topside. So I kept going. And in the gas, I lost track of her. And never found her again.
At first I thought it might have been another dimensional rift, but no, she didnt come back and I was forced to move on. Cue her coming back and Kill Billing me.

So I assumed she went to lay down somewhere and sleep and didnt wake back up. How sad.
The space marine helmet is working about as I intended it to. It protects against regular combat conditions, but cant hold up to the thick noxious fumes of the gas vents. Even when wearing a filter mask in addtion to it I on rare occasions ‘feel sick’.

On the plus side, Im finally tipping my health modifier from ‘assy mcboozepants’ to ‘modest matt’. Aplus there.

I spent 12 hours crafting a leather sleeveless duster and a backup leather trenchcoat yesterday. I failed to make it 3 damn times. I was ripped, until I saw that that gave me 48% skill. If I were not a slow learner I would have leveled up from that.

Slow learner advertises -50% skill gain, but the reality is that, especially in the beginning, its less than that. Especially with insomniac, bad temper, and alcoholism slowing me down and reducing my morale.

I named spear, made a repeating crossbow, modified the skillset of the repbow to archery, and considered making a longbow. I decided against it due to personality reasons. My characters are a rough extension of myself, and my habits and likes usually creep into their own. I like leather and crossbows. I like shotguns and revolvers. I like not using automatic spastastic wepaonry. So guess what my characters, who share my name, like to do?

Automatic guns feel gross in my hands. I dislike them in general.

Anywho. I hve yet to find a welding rig book, and Im down to maybe 1500 batteries to my name. 1000 of which are in the UPS that will power the laser and fusion weapons I have stashed away. I dont need them. I even dropped off the mossberg in favor of the repxbow and an underslung shotgun.

I made myself a fire suit and I have a lot more enviornmental protection than the last time I was in the mines. Stupid slugs with their acid trails. its damn annoying.
I shot my way through the slugs, but they almost dissolved my legs for it.

In other news. I learned that the fungal boomer’s blob spawns are in the fungal faction, which I guess, but its weird.
The zombie horse had 50 aggro and 50 morale, and was afraid of me, so I bumped that up.
I reduced the spawn rate of some new swamp critters, and I still havent made it to the northwestern city yet.

pedit:
Oh, and is it me, or is the lava in the mines spawning purposely by the staircase to be a dick?

And also, would the ability to ‘incubate’ fungal forms interest any players? Im talking about using marloss and other, rarer fruits in recipes to make items that had to age for a time period before they could be used to create a fungal creature.

You mean a concussion and several broken bones?
Nah, more like 50 dmg everywhere, and loosing my gas mask…

My character died of an infection in less then a day without giving me any warning except for the constant 30 pain, why did i just die while reading a book?

Stupid, someone should add some kind of warning before you keel over.

Then i remade the same character and went to my old base to continue my adventure, i decided to burn all my new equipment so i could use my old characters gear and not have an advantage.

I put all the equipment a bionic sniper carries onto a brazier and set it on fire then i went back to reading when it exploded 2 times destroying the door but leaving the mine console intact and killed me…i won’t put ammo in a fire anymore, lesson learned.

I’m going to remake my character again and set my equipment on fire in a pit so it can blow up in peace.

Shouldn’t your limb be green if it was an infection? By a zombie?

lol
