I am Samantha Freeman.
Yes, THAT Freeman.
I never knew what happened to my father and I’m sure I never will but, that really doesn’t matter now. Elliot has finished his modifications to the teleportation technology that Eli Vance had almost perfected with his daughter Alyx. The difference is, we weren’t trying to teleport to Mexico, we were teleporting to an alternate dimension.
Suited in my HEV suit, I prepared to step through the stable rift or “portal” as it is called by some. I double checked that I had what I needed. Crowbar, check. That’s all my father needed so why would I need anything else? Don’t tell Elliot but I did sneak my Atomic Smartphone along for the ride. I was curious if it could work across dimensions. He didn’t think it was worth testing… something something “interference”. How could a phone interfere with anything? Elliot insisted that I take some nutriment and a hydration pack with me, just in case the worst happened. “Oh no, those won’t interfere” he said “Just that damned smart phone of yours!”. He caught me but, what of it? I’m the subject after all and I’m taking all the risk.
Unlike my father I was fitted with an integrated toolset and about 1000 units of energy to power it, I imagine the technology came… after his time.
I was ready to step through the portal and Elliot gave me the thumbs up.
As most plans go, this was supposed to be a quick in and out. Test the technology and refine if needed. As most plans go, this one went wrong.
I’ll spare you the visual of how discomforting dimensional travel is and just start with what went wrong.
When I regained my senses I was downed by nausea and needless to say, I filled my HEV helmet with vomit. I ripped it off my head and started sucking in oxygen like I was a marathon runner. Elliot had said “Hold your breath before stepping into the portal!” but that is far easier to say when you’re the operator and not the subject.
After I regained my senses, I looked around. No… fucking… return… portal. “SHIT” I said, plus a bunch of other additive expletives. I knew I wasn’t going home anytime soon. Now I wish I had brought more than just a crowbar.
It was snowing outside so I imagine it was cold. I couldn’t tell because of my environmental suit. I thanked whatever was responsible for good fortune and got to my feet. I was in a structure of sorts, nothing that I’ve seen in my time. It seemed cozy enough but, cozy isn’t what I needed. I needed to report back on the success of the teleportation. I poked around a bit, found a gun I was unfamiliar with and some ammo, but it didn’t fit into the gun so I left them… I found a sketch; a map of the general area. Small, didn’t show much other than some wood trails (what is that?) and a hazardous waste sarcophagus.
I looked outside. “WOW!” I thought. “So much green!”. It was beautiful.
So far this dimension seemed a lot better than the one I was from.
