Problems with Electric Car

I’m trying to make an electric car with a backup generator in-case it’s batteries fail and the food inside it’s mini-fridge starts to spoil, but every time I put an engine + generator, the car thinks I want the car to be powered with the oil engine, but I want it to be powered with the electric engine. Any help, or am I out of luck?

There is no way to install an engine that doesn’t power wheels at the moment.

I’d go with keeping the oil engine in a trunk as spare. Then with a welder/acetylene torch/welding rig (even duct tape iirc) you can easily swap engines at will.
If its a welding rig, i’d also install some swappable storage batteries and keep some fully charged as spares. When out of power, swap a battery to power the rig, then swap engines and use the oil engine as you wish.

I’m pretty sure you can turn off/on separate engines if you have multiple…

In the vehicle menu choose the engines.you want. Engines with their boxes checked are being used.
