On a starting note, why is it called a crib? Why would a hardcore cap-bustin’ gangsta use a term for baby furniture? Whatever.
So turtling is a popular option in this game. Where do you put your safehouse, and what kind of luxuries do you fill it up with? Do you go with the barebone essentials, or do you create a haven with lighting, electric stoves, farmland and possibly plumbing (through use of cheats, tossing down furniture you can’t create yourself)?
I find that the Evac Shelter is one of the more customizable buildings in the game. One side is dedicated to just storage racks, one for vehicles I work on and the parts used to work on them, and one side will be a flavor side with furniture and such. I knock out all the windows early on for the sticks, rags, and string, then rebuild walls there. And the front side is pretty fortified, with a bunch of spiked ditches with standalone doors because zeds tend to go around the doors and onto the pits.
It’s been a while since I’ve actually constructed stuff though, it’s such a long process of chopping trees in the woods and bringing the logs back, smashing all of the display racks and fridges and fences in town, and the building process itself is rather tedious. The payoff in the end is rather gratifying, but I’ve found building vehicles is so much more fun and practical.
Since you can craft with essentials laying around anywhere within the 2-square radius, this actually organizes things and lets you act with tools in midst of the room. One specific “#” could get to be a Stove; though you shouldn’t be a slave to that as everything else is highly portable. Now, I usually have a stash apart from the main storage; it’s used for bigger quantities, as you sometimes wish to stock up on water and batteries - and not get cluttered when picking specific items to carry around. The clothing items are pretty much separated from this setup, and so are other sewing components.
Other, real neat application of such setup is, of course, the “Run-to-the-woods-and-build-a-7x7-or-so-cabin” that could be finished swiftly enough to avoid spawning pests near cities. Of course, you could craft a petroleum lamp and have the whole area illuminated.
The only recent stationary home I’ve had was a cabin in the middle of the woods, way the fuck out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town was about thirty worldmap tiles away, and it only had 10 or so buildings in it anyways. I refitted it with a garage, cut down trees, and made a path that I could ride my motorcycle out with. It was great, except for how zombies somehow found me every night and broke in every other night. I just gave up and got back to living in my RV.
Find a double barreled shotgun and go find baseball cap. hell even get addicted to meth, you’re a real hillbilly now!
I usually just board up the emergency shelter and chill in there for awhile until i get a car running. I wont build a stove but i will arrange an eating area and a work area, but other than that i dont stay in there much.

If I’m really getting into it I’ll wall off a four block city area, build roofing in the outside gaps and jackhammer away the walls of the original four buildings to create a giant warehouse. One block will be a garage, one will be a living area, one will be a storage area and one will be a construction area. The construction area will be a former hardware store, to make use of the metal compactor, which I find very convenient and efficient in terms of crafting. The constuction area usually ends up being a 5X5 square of all the shit in the game, organized by category. When I want to craft something I just stand in the middle of the square and more often than not all the materials are there already lol. The living area is basically a huge bed, covered in american flags, surrounded by weed, cigerrates drugs, porn, morale books, and delicious food. The outsides is basically Normandy beach in terms of trenches, spiked boards, barbed wire (my character is heavy sleeper, so he doesn’t like visitors).
I haven’t tried out farming yet. Do plants grow inside? If so, storage and construction will be merged to make room for a farm. If not, then eventually I’ll make a farm outside the compound, maybe burning down part of the city to make room.

By 5 block you mean 5-building, right? Since the world gen rarely gives us square blocks.
I think that’s way too much space, you end up with things spawning in your house.
The most construction Ive done is put up some log walls between an RV, ordinary house, and Evac shelter that all happened to be nearby. I could go to the evac safely to use the Console for free light, and to the RV for free cooking. It worked okay.
Outer Heaven gets a healthy supply of wolf spiders, jumping spiders, rabbits, squirrels, once a few wolves, coyotes, Cougars , and the occassional moose or bear. It’s also right next to a river; food and water are pretty much a nonissue.
I’m still working on my base. I’m hardcore on a different level. I make the ENTIRE base from scratch. It’s more time consuming, but it allows me to make the base precisely the way I want it.
I also reworked the repair bay, because dragging vehicles works weird in the game right now. Currently, whenever I tried to drag it, it would flip around on the opposite side of my character, so it basically looked like he suplexed the damn thing. I compacted it into a cube so it has the same dimensions as a quad bike, and I strapped an electric motor to it along with a seat and vehicle controls. So now in my mind’s eye it looks something like a forklift.
I made the kitchen and living quarters, and I went back to town and gutted a ton of display racks to get pipes to make metal racks back at the base. All the components for crafting recipes are right next to the kitchen unit. I also make occasional visits to the river to fill a jerrycan with clean water to fill up the kitchen unit at the base. Two water tanks hold an enormous amount of water. The jerrycan holds up to 25 litres, and filling up the tanks with a full jerrycan only fills it up less than 10%.
I’m making something similar to the house someone made in the vehicle thread. But it will take up the entire screen, and have the seat close enough to the doors for me to be a badass and shoot Z’s from the doors.
