New ammo types/descriptions

So, what’s with the new details added to old ammo types?

[spoiler=7.62x51mm]

7.62x51mm The 7.62x51mm largely replaced the .30-06 round as the standard military rifle round. It is lighter, but offers similar velocities, resulting in greater accuracy and reduced recoil.
7.62x51mm M80 A 7.62x51mm NATO round with a 147gr FMJ bullet. It is a powerful rifle cartridge commonly used by hunters and military snipers because of its high accuracy and long range.

Or,

5.56 NATO This rifle round has enjoyed widespread use in NATO countries, thanks to its very light weight and high damage. It is designed to shatter inside a target, inflicting massive damage.
5.56 NATO M855A1 5.56x45mm ammunition with a 62gr FMJ bullet containing a steel penetrator. Its light weight, high accuracy, and managable recoil lead to widespread use in the 20th century and it remains popular among militaries and civilians.

All this talk of grain size and bullet type confuses me. Like the new 5.56 round: “…with a 62gr FMJ bullet containing a steel penetrator.”
That makes it sound like an FMJ version of the default round, when it actually is the default round.

So I have to ask: Why all the technical talk?
