I need help with combat I'm getting killed

OK, so this is my problem I fight zombs to get good supplies, I grab said supplies and sprint into the woods survive a couple of days run out of supplies run back into town and get killed like I was made of wet tissue.

But I can kill a bear with a crack pipe and not a combat knife. I mean am I missing something about combat or is always this random.

1)Fight wolves and other smaller animals to train.
2)Combat knives have a pretty bad negative “to hit” penalty. Unless you find a Spetnaz knife techniques book you are usually better off going with something like a nail bat.

pipe from a locker is better nail boards/bats can get stuck.

Okay thanks for the tips I’ll train more.

First, even if you have 2 dodge skill right off, zombies are pretty likely to hit you at least once while you’re fighting them. You can counteract this by luring them over shrubs or counters and hitting them while they spend 200 move points getting over.

Second, and yes, this has already been said, but… combat knives have a -4 to-hit penalty, making your likelihood of hitting pretty awful unless your cutting weapon skill is really high. If you want to use cutting, find a machete or something.

Third, bears are insanely strong. Fighting them with a pocketknife is like asking to die. In fact, fighting them in melee at all is asking to die. If you managed to kill one with a crack pipe, you were either very, very lucky, the bear was already injured somehow, or your character was somehow amazingly skilled at that time. To take out dangerous foes like bears and zombie brutes, I recommend finding a pistol with ammo if you can, equipping it when a strong enemy is after you, waiting for them to get really close, and firing point-blank. That kills most things.

Last, and maybe this isn’t for me to judge, but it seems like you expect the game to be really easy. It isn’t. If taking out enemies was as easy as fighting them one by one, anyone could clear an entire town simply by being careful. But as it is, a single zombie is enough of a threat. Don’t expect the game to be like any other roguelikes you’ve played where enemies are weak at first and steadily get stronger until they overwhelm you. Enemies will always be strong. You just need to get strong enough to take them on.

I find 4 wheels (or more) and an engine do the trick perfectly

Lure zombies towards cars. It takes them 400 move points to get over each tile, and even longer if there’s doors or windows on it. Take a weapon that deals 10 or more bashing damage, has a to hit bonus and takes about 100 points to swing (rocks, heavy sticks, pipes).

You can now kill as many non-special zombies as you feel like. Butcher them after you are done, pile up all the zombie meat and then burn it with one of the clothes they dropped and a matchstick.

Enjoy browsing a giant pile of loot at your leisure for virtually no effort. Just remember to run away if your health drops too much, and to always keep your zombies walking over/towards cars.

^ That

… is good advice.

Don’t get surrounded. If you attract a crowd, fall back a bit and slaughter them one by one. Windows, shrubs and suchlike help with this. Use a quiet, or better yet silent weapon. If you’re planning to get into a fight, bring armour-- or at least a padded shirt.
A fitted padded shirt. You don’t want encumbrance if it hurts your combat ability too much.
Remember, drop your rucksacks/bags and such.

Leather jackets are pretty nice, as are leather pants and army pants, although you need a decent dodge and melee skill if you’re planning to use them unless you can find a perfect fit for leather stuff. Always grab a helmet too-- personally I love the motorbike helmet since it covers the mouth as well-- and the amount of times my bandana/dustmask etc gets ripped as zeds try to bite my tongue off is amazing.

Personally, I like to take some combination of speed buffs, especially on melee characters. If you’re faster than the zombie in question (a matter of perks and low encumberance), you can often take them out one-at-a-time in relative safety as follows:

1: Wait for zombie to walk to a tile next to you. If multiple zombies are present, maneuver as needed such that one of them is closer, and thus gets into melee range first; retreat if needed to avoid melee versus multiple zombies at a time.
2: Hit the zombie once.
3: Take a step back; if the zombie followed you, keep going until there’s a free space between the two of you.
4: Repeat 1-3 until the zombie is dead.

This isn’t foolproof, as zombies occasionally lunge, which is a move-and-attack combo; also, some zombies have ranged attacks, or are fast, or otherwise generally require more aggressive tactics. But it’ll do for the majority of your zombie kills, especially as a low-skilled melee character starting off, and is notably quicker than running around throwing rocks.

Thanks for the tips, I never thought about burning the meat to lure the zombies away but I run through cars and kill the zeds that followed me into the car.

Trust me I know this game is hard that’s why I love it, and as for the bear I lead it to a trap pile I found and waited for him to get damaged and would butcher him but he was tougher than I thought and apparently I was wielding a crack pipe and managed to finish the bear that way.

The other thing to remember is, if you can, avoid combat. There is often very little to gain from it. Move fast (parkour and cocaine can help here), get in, get what you need, and get out.

The tips have helped me to survive 4-days now and all I need now is a shelter right now im sleeping at an entrance to a mine shaft (where the terminals are) ,I just need to get more clothes to keep from freezing to death at night and to get over this cold I have and have been chugging dayquil and nyquil like water and doesn’t seem to help.

Specifically about the cold, drugs like nyquil and dayquil will only alleviate some of the symptoms of the illness rather than immediately ridding yourself of the problem, you’ll have to kill time and keep warm in order to get over the cold.

Eat vitamins too, to avoid the common cold.

Assuming your playing nightly version, we now have Vaccine shots that lasts longer than vitamins but are pretty rare.

Well I’m playing the experimental SDL version for windows. Also is a crowbar a decent weapon or at least better than a pipe?

Compare the stats  (For side by side comparison press I and movement key to select the tile with the item you want to compare to. If its in your inventory just press enter, then select the items you want to compare.)
But yes, Crowbar > Pipe, although there is a chance the crowbar might get stuck, leaving you unarmed…

Ok just making sure because the crowbar looked better in stats, and my character using these tips has gotten over the common cold then died of thirst I need to make a schedule for water runs.

Anything with cutting and piercing dmg will get stuck unless you have sufficient skill and a little str for them not to get stuck.
so for a beginner with no skills Pipe>Crowbar further more crowbars don’t have weak-block because the crowbar is a tool and using it as a makeshift weapon is like being desperate or your Gordon Freeman.
