How did you last die?

AAA I GET THIS REFERENCE THIS PLEASES ME.

I for one, trust fire.

I trust it to keep eating everything I deem important in videogames.

Forgot to take off 2 duffelbags after crafting and went for lab trip.
Somewhere in between i found barricade with chicken walker (first time finding it,ā€¦ i had some long break since last time in dda). drove past it with- thanks to all the looted heavy duty and composite armor,- with no real harm done. get out of my armored deathrolla bike (yes painted red), took heavy armor out of weapon box and put it on. some zombie dog was trying to bite me in mean time, so had to kill it - it took ages (still didnt really notice the big red 9 on torso) by the time i killed the dog, walker managed to get in range and shoot me few times - moderate damage, but awfull load of pain from all hits. deciding that escape is in order i tried to move back into my roller control seat - movespeed of 40 + moving over heavy frame gave the bot opportunity for over 10 carefully placed grenades.

that was something unexpected.
good job guys ;D

FIRE BAAAD!

Letā€™s see, my last character stayed out on a night raid of a city and accidentally stayed until morning. Killed by tank drone.

The one before that got too confident and went on a massive slaughter spree in the city. Destroyed a chicken walker, didnā€™t notice tank drone until it was too late.

The one before that managed to cure himself of a fungal infection shortly before being slaughtered by a hulk. At least that end was slightly more merciful.

The one before that was stupid OP, so I made a fast vehicle with a well armored front, set several mininukes, and sent as many triffids to hell as possible all whilst on a crazy heroin/acid high.

And before that was a bunch of challenge characters who either died during city night raids or in hordes.

Was exploring the area near the shelter when an NPC gave me a quest to go kill a Jabberwock.
Found a laser turret on my way there and put it down when I got near the J.
It turn on my and killed my the instant I put it down, and proceeded to cremate my body while not even giving the J a seconds attention.

Found my second chicken walker since this time I knew to run it took it a few minutes to swiss cheese my body but on the plus side I managed to put it to around 1/3 health with my rifle before I was too injured to do any more damage.

Best run yet, managed to survive up to day 12, before I decided that wandering into the lab was a good idea. I got in a bit too far and then encountered a turret, and my mothy adventures were ended in a hail of bullets.

Bit of a shame - Iā€™d almost hit 100 on my kill count for the first time!

My original character Donut Steel turned out to be very bad at detecting and disarming traps despite his dexterity. He died by crossbow headshot.

Iā€™m undecided on the humour value of half of that kill count apparently coming from an elementary school

Need some pointers on those turrets?

Regional school, actually. Probably not much difference but hey XD it was the first time my morale smiley ever hit the D: stage. Lots of sulking and book reading ensued.

Also pointers would be good!

On avoiding turrets:

For one, turn your flashlight off before opening doors in labs. If you open a door with your flashlight off, thereā€™s a good chance the turret wonā€™t be able to see you right away, and youā€™ll have a chance to close the door or step in a direction thatā€™ll hide you behind a wall or metal door and then close the door from a diagonal direction. For two, leave safe mode on so you donā€™t go charging into turret rooms like a doofus, but you shouldnā€™t charge around willy-nilly in labs anyway. For three, turrets emit light, so if a wall is mysteriously lit up in the dark (turning your flashlight off will give you an opportunity to notice this) thereā€™s a decent chance the room contains a turret (sometimes itā€™s only a computer console, but be wary). I always leave doors that I know are safe open (unless Iā€™m closing the doors in a dormitory room to take a nap or something) so that I know where Iā€™ve explored that turrets arenā€™t.

On taking out turrets:

For one, turrets canā€™t see you in the dark. If the turret is far enough away from the door, you may be able to shoot it from outside of its room without it firing back. For two, even if you hide behind a wall or metal door where you canā€™t see the turret, you can still throw an explosiveā€“EMP grenades are bestā€“into the room and catch it in the blast radius (EMP grenades have a very wide radius, so you may want to pitch them a good distance away from the turret so as not to fry the computer terminal in the room). For three, you can shoot around corners. While standing in a safe tile, use the peek function (shift+X, and then when the game asks you which direction to peek in, press in the direction of the tile you want to look from) to ascertain the exact tile the turret is located in. Then, end the peek and start aimingā€“you can move the aiming cursor into tiles where you canā€™t see, and if you pick the exact tile the turret is in, you can still hit it.

If you have the means, turrets are worth taking out. Theyā€™re generally in rooms that contain computer consoles that can be hacked for snippets of lore and overworld map data, and itā€™ll make traveling through that part of the lab again easier and safer. They can also drop 9mm ammo, particularly if you take them out with EMP grenades instead of shooting them or blowing them up.

UGGGGH SUPER USEFUL. Thank you!

Admittedly, the only part of that that was actually an original discovery on my part was shooting around corners, and for all I know it might actually be a bug. (Well, that, and the first time I took out a turret with an EMP grenade I learned the hard way that its wide radius can fry the nearby computer terminal, but eh.)

This is super useful information, thank you! From this Iā€™ve also learned that I shouldā€¦ probably have taken a ranged weapon with me into the laboratory. I didnā€™t have any ranged weapons, like, at all. XD Not grabbing a gun from one of the various gun-stocked houses in my small town, despite the fact that I had a suppressor in my base, was certainly a mistake I will try to avoid in the future.

I guess I was just really afraid of using guns forā€¦ some reason. Hm.

Oh well! Iā€™m still super pleased with how my run went (Except for the whole, yā€™know, zombie child slaughterfest thing - I will attempt to avoid repeating that as much as my abilities will allow). Day 12 is a new record for me, and Iā€™m hoping Iā€™ll get a semi-decent world next run.

Note to self also: Use safe mode more. Holy shit use safe mode more Chaz, I donā€™t care if the fact that it alerts you every time you encounter a dog bugs the hell out of you, fugginā€™ use it. Maybe try auto-safemode or something, I donā€™t know.

Auto-safemode is good and I use it, though itā€™d be nice to be able to turn off notifications for dogs that are just tracking you and not actively hostile. And yeah, even if youā€™re a melee character, you want a gun for labs assuming you donā€™t have a giant pile of EMP grenades or extremely strong armour all over your body (I suppose a strong bow and strong arrows could work, too, I guess). I can understand your reluctance to use them given the scarcity of ammo and the fact they make lots of noise when not suppressed (and given how much suppressors reduce their efficacy, especially for small arms), but the enemies in labs canā€™t open or break down the metal doors, so donā€™t worry about it when youā€™re in there. Leave the suppressor off for maximum efficacy. You can even bring a 9mm firearm if youā€™ve got one to take advantage of the turrets sometimes dropping 9mm ammo when destroyed. (They drop them in stacks of 50, to boot, so you can clean up on quite a bit of 9mm ammo, particularly if you use EMP grenades, which cause them to drop all their stuff instead of a single random component.)

Hey cool, I didnā€™t think of that! Notes to take for the next world

I think this is what I like about Cataclysm the most, being not-very-great and still learning from my mistakes. Although I died because I wasnā€™t careful, Iā€™m pleased that that run lasted as long as it did, and Iā€™m more prepared to die more awesomely the next time I get a foothold in the game.

Control laptops also make labs into easy mode. So, keep your eyes open for electronics books and HackPro USB drives.

Building a 1 tile wide supersonic car inside of a laboratory proved itself to be successful at starting fires, actually reaching Mach 1 before the end of the corridor without exploding itself, plowing through about ten tiles of solid rock and crashing my game.
However, now I need to create an entirely new save file since that one got corrupted for some reason.
Technically my character did not die, but still - donā€™t build supersonic cars in the underground.

I love entering a new lab floor and hacking everything on it immediately, then hearing turrets going off and exploding all over the place as zombie scientists and blobs set things off.

1400 kills then tankbot during sunrise. Instantly in its range. I try to get a building between it and me but it just crashes through . Rip. Now debugging back my char.
