How did you last die?

I dunno what it is with my game and spiders. But my last… Oh, eight deaths now have been wolf spiders. They’re faster than me, and their poison VERY quickly cripples you to immobility. Worst of all, they go fully hostile the moment they see you meaning that you will practically never be able to retreat. Lastly, they are EVERYWHERE. I mean I cannot move to the nearest town without seeing at least three.

Though my last death was probably the funniest. I killed one, crowbar to the face, immensely satisfying. 70 pain, crippled head and torso. Sight fucked. Take five steps inside to get medical supplies- “You have been bitten by the wolf spider! You have been poisoned! Game Over!” Bloody thing had been hiding around the shelter wall.

Jesus these hawks invade. First IRC then the forums ;).

Throw rocks or spears at them. Works for me. And avoiding them. Somehow wolf spiders never really go after me that much.

Yeah. You’ll get the warning that they’re nearby long before they start tracking you down.

Just don’t stray too near to them. Same with bears.

Basically learn to handle wolves and cougars - everything else you can avoid unless you get really unlucky and stumble on them (in which case run and throw rocks, or pop some drugs)

I’ll do that. In the past. When it happened. :stuck_out_tongue:

(And yeah, I’ve learnt my lesson. In future they shall die and I’ll burn their tempting lewt to prevent cheatism.)

Really? Because as far as I’m aware, the three states of creatures are “Ignoring” “Tracking” and “Hostile!”

Wolf spiders and jumping spiders go Hostile! the moment they see me, and then will usually follow me relentlessly…

I can handle wolves and cougars fine, but, oh jeeze the spiders.

Actually, on that note. Seemingly everything goes Hostile! or Tracking the moment I see it, aside from Black Widows, which are “Ignoring”

Day one was spent getting the initial raiding over, accumulating some supplies and such from the nearby town. It went quite well, all things considered. Adequate food and water, all the necessary cooking utensils, and even a nail bat.

My evac shelter started next to a swamp. I mean, immediately next to a swamp, it was the very next overmap tile. I considered finding a better shelter, but didn’t. This, of course, was the beginning of the end.

Day two, my initial grace period was well over. At max XP, I put down my book on First Aid and opened the door of the evac shelter to see what all the ruckus was outside. It seems that a giant frog had appeared. Well, no problem, I could take on a giant fro- KABLAM!

It seems my fallout shelter buddy NPC was carrying a shotgun, and proceeded to wake about 50 swamp creatures as he (she?) waded outside to engage the frog.

I tried to escape but, well, that’s the problem with swamp creatures, isn’t it? They’re generally faster than a starting character can hope to be.

That pesky NPC creep didn’t even have any skills to train me after I found him some antibiotics. Should have done what I usually do with NPCs: try to convince them to follow me, then lead them to their merry death. Debug commands are fine too, I suppose, but this way I can get at their pockets while still seemingly earning it. But, to be fair, it probably would not have mattered much if I had opted to stay anywhere near a swamp.

Tonight I decided to try something different and go for a more pure melee build and took points out of perception. That landmine reminded me how stupid of an idea it was…

I can never see landmines… I think you need 10 perception to see them.

Pretty sure its 11.

Hmm. How big is your screen? I have mine quite large, so I can see the spiders actually on screen long before they start to follow me.

On a smaller viewport, though, it might be tougher to navigate.

Do they start tracking when you see them in the UI compass area (the bit where it says what monsters are North South East West etc.)?

10 Perception finds landmines back at 02 Feb.

That said, sunglasses reduce Perception by 2 when worn, even when it’s Sunny during the day. I noticed that when a known minefield suddenly was just dirt mounds one sunny day. Still alive, though there was a close thing proving that rocks only crack MilOutposts at night.

Throwing up after getting several wounds, one green and infected. Severely dehydrated and starving slowing me down while getting clobbered by a shock zombie.

I was soooo hungry, and hence went to hunt a passing squirrel with a rock at 70 speed. Unfortunately, the chase continued for five map tiles before suddenly a dozen frogs, giant dragonflies, and other horrors popped up. Fearing the worst, I check the map and it was indeed the worst.

I was two map tiles into a swamp. Need I say what happened next?

Death by sleeping. I hate this game
But now, seriusly, I’ve already lost 3 characters just by going to sleep. No addictions, no drugs, no stimulants, house protected enough to stop a semi-truck (tested), only Long fingernails as mutations, “confortable”.

It just went “WAVE GOODBYE TO YOUR ARSENAL OF RARE WEAPONRY, YOUR SKILLS AND TOOL SET, FATASS”

“Oi, you bleeding gravy, fatso!”

Note to self: Do not set a house on fire with a molotov while you’re still inside.

I went too fast.

Remember that character that could now die of old age? That found the best located farm ever?

Well, he died. Swarmed by swamp creatures. While trying to escape from that hellhole.

Man, do I hate the feature/bug that hides tiles by overwriting them.

So, what have we learned today?
a) If it’s too good to be true, it’s a trap
b) Stay away from rivers. Really. Even if it seems there’s no swamps nearby or there’s just one tile at a relatively safe distance. Don’t. Run like hell from there. If you want water right now your only safe options are toilets (houses, farms, shops, etc), LMOE shelters and bottled water.
c) We really need a way to gather water safely in the wilderness. Right now settling next to a river is a gamble. And chances of dying are too high to be even considered.
d) Nerf swamps. Really.
e) The game LIES

Well I was just getting into a new save, but then I walked out of a home and saw the zombie horde standing on my doorstep asking for some sugar.

Well, I gave them plenty of sugar in the form of liquid flammable death. But even after burning down half the city down in my escape they managed to overwhelm me.

Using my last Molotov I decided to go down in a blaze of glory and smash it down at my feet.

I regret nothing, as I took with me around 50 of those bastards before they got me… And I burned down a small city, and that is always a fun thing to do.

Spoiler warning for Mines, I guess.
Well, the Amigara is Faulty. Got nailed from full, dark-green health to full death in one turn; the game didn’t even have the decency to show me where I apparently got hurt.

(1 Horror? tough part is killing it inside of 5 turns because it took 15 to decide to come out. 2 Horrors? might scratch the clothing but if you remembered to take off the gas mask you’ll be OK. 4 Horrors? I’m not sure what happened. Just boom, game over, from full health & reinforced gear.)

I’m calling it a bug; even if all 4 hit my Glass Jaw for max damage (4 Horrors ad 2d4 per attack, 4*8=32), and got a complete armor bypass in the process (reinforced knit hat/bandana, safety glasses IIRC, and scratched army helmet) I had ST 11 +2 from Extremely Strong. IIRC from character creation, that’s at least 70 HP.
So…

In that world’s plenty more
exploration to be had
You think I’ll let it go, you’re mad
I had another turn coming

Yeah, that happened to me too. Mind you, my char had 21 Strength at the time (14 Base + 7 from Insanely Strong), AND he had a Kevlar Vest on. It was my most successful character then. I loved the encounter though.

In other news, ANOTHER successful character of mine died…from injuries sustained by dismounting a moving vehicle. Fuck it.

Pro tip: next time you press handbrake in a vehicle, press it thrice and make sure your speed is 0.

Last character spawned and had a friendly green NPC in the shelter, along with the standard purple. Weird, but I rolled with it. The purple NPC asks me to get her some software, and I’m like “Yeah, I guess so.” Ask her to come along and she says “No way.” I shrug and walk away.

So then I take my newly crafted wood spear and my NPC buddy (now also armed with a spear) and step out the door and immediately think “Well, gee, it looks like her dumb butt should have come with us.” as I discover a vast horde of fungaloids descending on the shelter from all directions. The other NPC’s gunshots ring out behind us as me and my buddy run like hell to the west, away from the small town and the grey T on the map. Along the way, we both get battered and bruised, but we escape and suddenly we’re on the road. We head out west to a four-way intersection, fighting wolves along the way. We stop and she teaches me a point of melee.

We head north, then almost immediately flee a mob of triffids after cutting one down for food. We go west and find a helicopter crash with a single Z soldier, and after dispatching him I get a rucksack, AND the biggest, best load of CBMs I’ve ever seen in the game! Seriously, it even had the Time Dilation module in there! I load up the rucksack, and then we have to flee back, because even more Triffids.

We try south, and pass by a beehive which disgorges a crapton of scarred zombies. We kill a few, but the wooden spears seem almost useless against this class of Z for some reason. (2 damage? What?) I set a nearby spider web on fire and attempt to lure the Zs through it, and get a few, and then we flee further south, bruised and getting very thirsty, with no water sources in sight yet. Maybe we’ll find something down there?

Well, hey, what should pop up further south, but another grey T! “Damn it!” We backtrack as the first small fungaloids appear at the southern edge of the map, and travel slightly northeast this time trying to escape the mob of scarred Zs when all of a sudden, I run into the furious owner of the web I burned before, and as I’m already badly battered from the Fs and ws and Ts and Zs, I get poisoned and finally die.

Man, that was one hell of a ride.
