What methods do you use to clear out towns. Do you draw the undead to your location and lure them into traps? Set up a fortified base and unload on them? Run through town hucking grenades in every direction?
I run them over, not with my main ride, oh no not with big Bertha, my baby. I take an old clunker, ram it into a couple zombies and then loot the bodies/butcher them. Of course I still miss some and they may get up…but next time around, they wont. If I don’t want loot, I just burn the buildings down. It provides a huge amount of nails all of which work as ammo and building materials. Whatever survives is easily accessible over the rubble and the zombies usually die.
I usually just walk through arrowing things to death. Once you get to high enough level, even a longbow with metal arrows can take out smokers and skeletons reliably, and the big reds are a piece of cake. Haven’t tried the Reflex Recurve bow as I was on a version which would crash with it.
I leave the buildings, but butcher corpses. After a while I stopped collecting batteries and pretty much everything else, as if you can get integrated tools and at least an internal furnace, holy crap does tooling become easier (you can even get buy with only one or two inventory tools, the integrated tools even includes a thing like a jack).
If I can’t get integrated tools this game, I will probably be hoarding cans and glass bottles, especially now that I know I can Unload them.
Only if I don’t have a kitchen unit do I even go into homes after I’ve been using a car for a while. They rarely have good stuff once you raid an electronics store unless you need rags for repair, but sheets are more than enough. Raiding bathrooms gets pretty boring when you have like 14 medkits and 47 bandages, without having made a single bandage.
Well…there are many ways to clear out a town, such as the methods mentioned above:
-
Gun and run- running around like it’s a Left 4 dead game and shoot anything that moves. Better have alot of ammo…and balls.
-
Drive by- Grab a car, and mow the un-dead down. This is hard to do if there are ALOT of cars, which most of time there is.
-
Burn it down- Set fire to the buildings and pick up the loot.
as well as these methods: -
Blow it up- So there’s this missile silo just outside of town…
5.Set up shop- Make a base, slowly go house to house, clearing zombies as you go, and bring the supplies back to your base. note, probably not a good idea to do w/ dynamic spawn ON.
6.Team up- NPC’s are pretty stupid, but they make good zombie bait.
- Trap & Bag- Set up traps throughout the city to kill all dem zombies. works well with #5.
and my personal favorite
- Night Ops- Night vision? check. Super ninja stealth skills? check. Sweet, now as long as u don’t run straight into any zombies, you’ll be okay. oh, and don’t shoot, break open doors, smash…actually, just don’t breathe.
My suggestion is to not use the missile silo idea, save that for the fungal blooms and triffid groves. you know, the shit that’s impossible raid without a debug console…or power armor.
there are more methods that are completely different or combinations of the previously mentioned ones.
Just remember, zombies are dumb, very dumb. Don’t be zombie…or do. Like i said, there many different ways to do it. Pick your favorite.
Probably also doable if you don’t forget to light the molotovs.
So, am I doing things wrong, or am I bugged that I just hit them with my fists? Is it wrong that they die in two or 3 hits? I like to let a swarm surround me and then just melee them in one area so that I do not have to run far for loot and then I just punch them all a couple of times until they die. And of course I butcher them now that I know they, makes it easy to see an area I have cleared since there will be a pile of remains in the center of town…
i usually lure some of them and go stay behind broken window frame so i can hit single target with some first hit. with this i can easily clear them out. XD
Stroll right into the middle of the town with a fusion blaster arm and start firing away, eating pants and whatnot to replenish my fuel with my internal furnace as I go.
Generally sticking to choke points and carrying molotovs/cocaine with me if the situations turns bad.
“Clearing out a city” really depends on the timetable, mostly.
Within the first week, it’s pretty touch-and-go, and I usually just look for a car or a liquor store to get as much easy destructive power as quickly as possible.
But after a month or so, you can pretty much walk into a town with just a sword and Raiden your way through the whole place. Skill and equipment are inordinately important in such calculations.
I usually kill everything with bow/firearm, switching to knife spear/machete to put them to sleep forever while they’re down. Chop chop! My last and best guy was a maniac - kill count got up to 1600, with 600 just green Z’s, rest was a mix of squirrels, brutes, and god knows what, after having high enough skill in firearms I just openly declared a war, running around howling (mutation, meheh) through town and killing everything in my sight. Next time I’ll probably build allegorical truck and stand on top of it while shooting everything, crawling through town at 10km/h with crazy music playing from speakers.
Probably also doable if you don’t forget to light the molotovs.[/quote]
Tear gas jacks up Triffids quite well. Flamethrowing & jackhammers work well too. Fungal spires apparently die against any significant firearm; haven’t had the opportunity to try it out just yet.
You just need AP ammo, and enough skill to reliably hit the spire at the edge of the firestorm. It’s best to go at night I find.
Killed an entire town with only a combat knife… after that I got on a working motorbike and was headed to the next town in search of a welder. Was flung from my bike by a beartrap and spent the night in a nearby mansion.
The next two towns I cleared (STILL ON FOOT) with a Katana. Those things are ridiculous, felt a bit like this:
With the right character, this is not a bad idea as long as you’re facing only classic zombies. This tactic would probably get your killed against monster types such as spitters, shockers, smokers, and hulks.
I cleared a town out with a rock, a glock, and 50 9 mm shots.
It was a small town though.
Well now that i have turned everything dynamic “ON”, it is a lot harder (but also a whole lot more fun! :D) to try to clear a town.
I am right now in the middle of an attempt to clear a town and i have started to divide the town into sections, i do this by digging a set of 2-3 moats between buildings so that zombies can’t move around as easily (note: this, of course, means that it will be harder for you to move around as well but as long as you have some 2x4s on you you will be fine). These also makes a great choke point in case you are being chased by a horde. Just lure em in and watch them fall. You can even burn the bodies in the pits when you are done to make sure they don’t get back up again.
If i, for some reason, need to stay in the town for the night i usually place some traps in the room i am staying in so i don’t need to worry about unwanted night time visitors.

Cataclysm - where masochism is on both sides of screen. I love dynamic spawn. Turns city from easy shopping into deathtrap.
That would made a good signature.
Well i cleared out a town with my fists.
But I’ve had enough practice and i already have a survivor with dynamic on , he i living in a public works building , literally one square from the town wich is already half cleaned out. The zombies just keep coming and coming , it’s kinda getting boring after the 100th zombie.
Yeah, having a couple hours of free “easy shopping” before magical zombie spawns isn’t easy…
