When I try to slice up logs with a chainsaw it says I can't build there

If the chainsaw is on, with gas in it, yes.

If otherwise, probably not.

Wait, logs? Did you chop down a tree and try to use it on the fallen parts? Or are you attempting to use it on a item log?

On item log.

You have to use the construction menu on the terrain logs, and (I think) the crafting menu on the item logs.

Now I tried it on trees, and everything works, just not as I expected. I thought chopping up logs would give fire wood.

I know a wood saw is (or was) used by 'a’pplying it to the log item, I never find a chainsaw though, and rarely bother chopping down or sawing up trees since I’m nomadic.
