What's happening in YOUR randomly generated apocalypse? Part 2!

I’ve been trying a deserted island start with some random characters lately.

Wilhelmina Regan the Handywoman died 4 minutes in when she discovered her island wasn’t quite deserted – there was a giant worm in residence, who took offence to her squatting, and ate her.

Lawry Dennis the Novice Stormshaper lasted six whole (mostly uneventful) days, and died of frostbite while trying to find some way to forge a handful of scrap metal into a chunk of steel for a makeshift hammer.

Scotty “Gluttony” Koenig the Lumberjack is doing better. He got a straw bed and fire pit constructed, and over the next four days scoured every bush on his five map-tile island looking for a container to boil water in, and found none. He did get some bones from some unfriendly little dinosaurs that attacked him, which gave him a bone shiv to cut things with. Yelling at the dino’s buddies caused them to flee, which was better than having them rot.

By the morning of day four he was drinking unboiled lake water out of desperation and vomiting a lot, but staving off dehydration by a hair’s breadth. He had also constructed a straw basket, and using that, he ferried his clothes and possessions across to a neighboring seven tile island over a three hour period, whereupon he donned his clothes once more set up his straw bed and fire ring, cooked some nearby cat tails, and dehydrated again, set out with his straw basket and wood axe to explore the new island and forage for desperately needed supplies.

This turned out to be surprising, as he saw a wood wall ahead! He had discovered a small boat house, complete with a racing kayak! There was no suitable container, but there were metal display racks which might yield metal sheets. He also spied some unpulped zombie corpses in the woods to the east. Dropping his basket and pulling out his axe, he moved carefully over to smash them. A regular zombie, a child, and a fat zombie that rose as he approached. Two swings of his mighty wood axe felled it once more, and he pulped it. Wondering what might have dropped these zombies beforehand, his eyes scanned the area and spied an odd round structure made of red stone: a wizard’s tower! He was saved! Too bad he was illiterate and can’t read those nifty spell scrolls laying around.
Inside he met Kristy Bullock, a magus who gave him a mission to track down her wayward apprentice and a stolen book, and on his way out he “borrowed” a 3L glass jar to boil water in, a hammer, and a screwdriver.

Ironically, on the way back to his makeshift camp, he foraged a couple of bushes just for the hell of it, and of course, a gallon jug appeared.

My news traffic pilot, Chopper Carol, lost her helicopter! As she was out trying to scout for fuel, apparently someone or something damaged her ride to the point it was no longer flyable. Not being a tracker, she could only guess it might have been a roving pack of zombies. Looks like Chopper Carol is grounded for good - or at least until she could find a new ride.

Striking out with her pitchfork and sack of canned goods she looted from a nearby farm, she picked up an old dirt trail figuring it’d be safer to avoid towns for now and maybe she could find an old hunting shack to hole up in. A few hours down the trail, Carol saw a couple buildings up ahead through the trees - some sort of cabin with a barn. It looked off somehow but maybe because it was just run down.

She started in the barn since it was the closest building to her, and might have something she could use for protection. Pulling the barn door aside, there was no farm equipment, no animals in pens or even hay scattered about. There was a counter with a locker full of cash & an assault rifle. Further in was a large desk and a set of steps leading down. She gripped her pitchfork tight, cursed herself then ran back for the assault rifle she found near the front of the building.

What she saw when she descended was more than she could comprehend. She was in a viewing area with a thick glass wall looking into an arena of some sort. There in the arena were several people with ramshackle armor and weapons, actively butchering each other! She banged on the glass to make them stop, even beating the thick window with the butt of the assault rifle, but they ignored her completely.

In a panic, Carol ran back upstairs and over to the cabin. Maybe there was something in there to help or something to make those people stop killing each other.

Never found this one. Is it from some mod or vanilla?

It’s from Cata++ the slave fighters

Finally finished exploring the megalake. Half a dozen prisons, countless islands and about dozen (or even more) lighthouses. 7.5 OM screens wide and almost 11 screens high. Some coords: most western point -6’167 0’25, north -5’166 -1’107, southeast -1’105 2’126. There’s a peninsula with at least six cities on eastern part of it. And of course, mapgen did deliver this (among other things):

See that crossroads west of cursor? Yep, that’s a town in the middle of a lake/river. With no bridges leading to it. Town to the west is also placed, uh… unusually, let’s call it that. Strangest thing is, this is not overmap borders, that screen is quite far from any of those.
e: almost forgot. see those two white “#”'s to the north? Boat rentals. Too bad you first need a boat to get to any one of those…

I think that’s the most bizzare mapgen I’ve seen. Very cool, though.

Global warming? The, uhh, lake glaciers melted from… uhh, the fallout and flooded those towns! Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Just explain it as flood defenses failing

Chopper Carol, my news traffic pilot, found a group of gladiators hacking each other to death and was determined to stop it. She ran back from the barn to the main cabin, desperate to find a way down into the fighting pits. There were doors off in one corner, locked shut and boarded up with beams and planks and anything else that would keep them shut.

Finally, after prying for what seemed like an eternity, Carol was able to pull a door open and head back into the fighting arena. She ran through cells designed to keep humans, but found one whose bars were loose enough to get into the fighting pits. By the time she arrived, one “team” had slaughtered the other. The team smeared with blue stood atop the recently killed.

Carol said she could lead the group to the surface but make them swear they wouldn’t kill again, unless there was no other recourse.

They trekked for days, a cabin beside a glowing crater one way, mass graves of the undead beginning to claw back up to the surface 3 or 4 other ways. Chopper Carol and Jean, the apparent leader of the slave fighters decided it would be best to trek through the woods to find some place safe and near game to feed the group.

Walking the woods, they found a set of ponds teeming with fish. The fighters were happy to chop down trees, even if with crude stone axes. A few stones were dug to make a ring around a campfire, and everyone ate well on fresh speared fish, drank their fill of purified water and plans for the next leg of their journey began between trading stories of capture, neglect and suffering mixed with that of Carol’s talking about flying over the noise and stress. The group had begun to come together.

You might get hearing back if you live for DOZENS of years but that is incredibly impractical so get used to not hearing.

I think it’s only about 6 or 7 months now that turns are 1 second.

Found a random manhole in the middle of the woods. So when I opened it I found this lab. I think it is a cental lab since It is HUGE. Also defeating fungaloids in a lab is easy. Open the door, just drop some flamable liquid (denatured alcohol) on a fungal tile, set it on fire with a lighter, close the door and come back about halve an hour later and see a completely cleared room.

My wall of cars is nearly finished. Just one car more.

wallofcar

(I did build some actual fence before giving it up as a mugs game).
I’m not sure collecting cars is faster than building fences, but it’s less boring.

I used an armored bus as the door for my compound, once.
It turned out to be quite a nice solution, even though it was born as a nod to Mad Max 2

i’d say building a wall of cars is certainly faster… but mabye you could deconstruct a lot of those cars and build metal walls instead? (just gotta dig a hole and use scrap metal, which you’ll get lots of from the cars)

generally speaking, zombies have an easy time sliding their way through car metal, but metal walls take quite the beating.

It’s mostly to keep wildlife out / farm critters in. Deer ate half my harvest before my Spring was over.

Why don’t you just eat all of the wildlife/farm critters.

I found my first NPC in early summer - his name is Ali and he looks to be a post threshold Raptor. This guy is an absolute beast; his combat skills far exceed mine (I’m the brains of the outfit). After outfitting him in SWAT armour and tiger claws I can pretty much leave him to it. He went toe to toe with a Hulk last night; by the time I had pulled my rifle out of its sling it was practically dead.

A few months after finding Ali we picked up Jeffrey (AKI Spiderman). Another post threshold mutant with an annoying habit of trailing webs everywhere. His combat skills aren’t quite as amazing as Ali’s but they are still excellent.

And, a few days ago we picked up another NPC who is yet ANOTHER Raptor mutant and nearly as impressive as Ali! What a posse of freaks they make but, holy moly can they tear things to pieces.

One other great thing about these NPCs is that the two Raptor mutants have the Melee Weapon Training trait. They can’t use it themselves due to the game being unable to handle it but I didn’t see why they shouldn’t be able to teach me. So I rolled up which skills they had using a random number generator and I got Medieval Swordsmanship and Eskrima. Great stuff!

Me: This time I will use minimum technology like things, make a ship, cart with a horse, camp like base, equip myself with sword and leather/iron/steel armor ect.
Game gives me working electric car, house with another new-like car, acetylen torch, hacksaw and resources for making electronic things
CDDA: Doubt.
