This is an unofficial Mac OS X Experimental build. These builds are similar to the official experimental builds as they use the latest source code from the master branch. It was built with Tiles (SDL), Sound, Lua supports and translations (starting on 7965+). It supports all mods. The source is available here. It requires OS X 10.7+.

It opens but all I see is a black unresponsive window. Is there something wrong?

There is most likely nothing wrong. It can take a while for the game to load completely before you see the main menu especially on the first load where it has to write a few config files. On my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 Ghz), it can take between 5 and 30 seconds to load. Just be patient.

As an alternative, you can try enabling [tt]Software rendering[/tt] (Options -> Graphics). It seems some implementations of OpenGL on OS X have problems with loading textures in VRAM. On my MacBook, enabling Software rendering sped up the loading process by about 8 times.

It does not work? Can you help me?

I can only provide limited support for these builds. It was tested to work with a clean install of OS X 10.11 and a clean install of OS X 10.7. I compile it on OS X 10.9 and it works there as well. If you leave me a comment with a good description of the problem, I might take a look and fix it.

Where can I find my save games, my config options, my templates and my memorials?

They will be located in [tt]~/Library/Application\ Support/Cataclysm/[/tt]. This also means that they will be preserved when you will update the game bundle. There should be at least 18 ways to access that directory if you cannot find it.

Can I install another sound pack or new mods?

Yes, you can install a new sound pack or new mods in [tt]/Applications/Cataclysm.app/Contents/Resources/data/[/tt]. Unfortunately, they will be lost if you update the game. You will have to install them again. I suggest you try the ChestHole sound pack. If you are using build version 7965 or less, you should use the old ChestHole sound pack.

How do I update to a new version?

Download the new version and simply drag the new game bundle into the Applications folder. Nothing else is required. That will unfortunately remove any custom mods or sound pack you previously added.

Will you do a curses build?

Maybe later. If you prefer playing without tiles, you can still do it with the tiles version by going into the Options -> Graphics -> Use tiles and change it to false. As of April 12th 2016, I will now be producing a console build as well. Thanks to the efforts of patternoia for the proper scripts and makefile.

When are you going to provide new builds?

I will build the latest version at least every Friday and upload it on Github. There will be times when interesting features, changes or bug fixes will come up and these will incite me to upload a fresh build. Just have a look at the releases on Github once in a while.

I would like to thank you for this build.

Every thanks message is appreciated. You can also buy me a beer by donating bitcoins to 1CucrZu8kzRDStonLJ5Qj67zoj2EW3D9ga .

Thanks man. Can confirm this ran just great on a 2011 macbook pro running El Capitan.

One thing: Is this the new default font? The font looks different, plus the screen kind of flashes whenever you navigate around in a menu. Like the whole screen is refreshing every time it updates and there’s a split second of black as it does so.

I’m not complaining, just checking this is normal behaviour. It doesn’t do this in stable or an xcode build I did of experimental about 3 weeks ago.

Thanks for the build!

The font should be the same unless you modified some of the configs. The configs should be in [tt]~/Library/Application\ Support/Cataclysm/config/fonts.json[/tt].

The flickering problem was an issue with experimental. It seems it was recently fixed with this PR. I’ve just uploaded a new build which include the fix and the latest changes if you want to try it out. [tt]0.C-7926-gb0ca751[/tt].

Starting on 7965, builds will also include translations.

All fixed now and the font is back to normal. I didn’t change anything at all, but the font was different in one of the earlier builds you put up. Weird, eh?

Thank you very much for the effort. I really apreciate it.

Great! I really appreciate those builds. Wielkie dzięki!

Nothing much changed really. The only major change in the builds is the addition of translations in 7965.

Huge thanks for the build and frequent updates!
But I indeed spot some problems, like not able to form underground scenarios. When chosen challenge scenes like lab escape or mine, message popped up saying lab stairs or sth cannot be found, and when the game did start the character started on ground. (Not sure if it’s a build problem or just me being stupid and clicked something I shouldn’t.) This may also be the reason why I was never able to find a science lab, and therefore can never go alpha :(.
But LMOE shelters and city basements formed well. Strange.
And by the way, it feels good to have pre-installed mods in game, but just like how I failed to install the official mac build, I failed to install other mods. Is it possible for you to include more mods in up dates, or give short words on how to DIY? Thanks!!!

There might be bugs with the experimental version of the game. I heard about that one before and it might not have been fixed yet.

Like I mentioned in the original message, you can install new mods in [tt]/Applications/Cataclysm.app/Contents/Resources/data/[/tt]. The included mods are the mods that are part of the base game. Check out the external mod list.

The latest release includes 2 builds. One with older version of SDL libraries and one with the new versions of those libraries. You should try the one with the new version and let me know if you find bugs. I’ll be using them from now on.

Hi rremyroy, really appreciate those builds.
I got into a problem about language.
I’ve changed language to Chinese in option however it shows rectangles instead of letters. I tried change the font to some chinese supported ones however the game can’t start after replace the file.
Wondering if you have any idea so I can make it work.
Thank you.

Rectangle characters are most likely due to missing unicode symbols in the font used or the fallback font used. Using a different font that includes those Chinese symbols should do the trick.

I’ve had troubles on my personal Mac with missing symbols on Google Chrome with various pages. I’m guessing the base OS X fonts or fallback fonts are less than exhaustive when it comes to including symbols out of the western set. I’ve been looking online for solutions to my problem with Chrome without much success.

Do some searches, trying installing new fonts, see if you can get a better fallback font for those missing symbols. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the las update!! Enjoying your build really much, apreciated!!

As of today, I will also be building a console (curses) version. Thanks to the efforts of patternoia for the proper scripts and makefile.

Now that there are official OS X experimental releases, I will stop building unofficial releases.
