Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Hihi all!

Another first poster, more questions.

I haven’t been able to find anything definitive on where in a vehicle to put the important stuff (like fuel/engines).
I’ve seen references to things being “sniped” and how running stuff over can hit the undercarriage; and just wanted to know how y’all mitigate that?

Do i put the goodies rear and central? or behind wheels? :s

For scale reference I’m building onto a military Humvee.

Thanks!

I am steadily losing health, I think, and I don’t know why. Eating healthy, keeping dry, and keeping at a comfortable temperature. Over the past 21 days I have had 1 alcoholic drink, 1 joint, and about 12 aspirin. I have no nutrient or mineral warnings. Other than that, I haven’t eaten any unhealthy food (unless irradiated food counts as unhealthy, in which case I have had one irradiated chicken course). My diet consists of vege sandwiches, cooked offal and boiled stomachs, and clean water. Nonetheless, I wake up every morning feeling poorly, and get a warning that I need to eat healthy ‘for once’.

Is there a debug item that I can easily use to test my health to confirm it isn’t a bug?

I don’t know if there is a debug item for it, but your character’s health score, and healthy_mod are recorded in the .sav for your world.

[ol][li]To get to it you open the “save” folder, which is in the folder where the .exe for the game is stored.[/li]
[li]Inside “save” there will be a folder for each world you have; each folder will be named after its world. [/li]
[li]Inside the world you want to check there will be a number of files, most of which will all be named with the same random string of characters.[/li]
[li]The file you want will have the string of characters and will end in .sav[/li]
[li]Open it, treating it as a text file if necessary, and use Ctrl+f to find “healthy” or “healthy_mod”. Both values are next to one another so you’ll find them both regardless of which one you search for.[/li][/ol]

Once you’ve found the value, you could change it if you wanted. Both “healthy”, and “healthy_mod” range between -100, and 100.
Radiation is also recorded in the .sav under “radiation”, and could be adjusted as necessary. I’m not sure what it scales to though, since I’ve never had a character live long enough to get above 1556. I’ve checked radiation in the .sav before and after eating all manner of “irradiated” foods and it has never changed the radiation value.

As for what is causing the health issue, I’m not sure. Are you using PK’s Rebalance? If so, then all poisons affect health, as does radiation, and temperature (Warm/Chilly affects “healthy” and everything above/below those affects “healthy”, and “healthy_mod”.) I know you said your temperature was fine, but the damage could have been done earlier and wasn’t undone yet.

Do you have any Vitamins? Those generally do well enough boosting health score.

OK, thanks for that. I don’t play with PK’s rebalance, but I have confirmed something odd is happening. Yesterday I had -10 healthy and 0 healthy_mod. I ate 2 vege sandwiches, and then was at -10 healthy and 2 healthy_mod. Also, no radiation. So far, so good.

But after a day, and eating some clean water [0 healthy_mod], 2 sloppy joes [0 healthy_mod], and 2 boring sandwiches [0 healthy_mod], I am at -11 healthy and 0 healthy_mod. I don’t know how often healthy is updated, but I expected that I should be gaining 2 healthy every update, but instead I lost one after a day…

I was attacked … does taking damage reduce ‘healthy’ directly? Something is hurting my healthy directly, as my healthy_mod is pretty stable.

[Edit] Also, if I am reading this correctly, my nutrient levels are surprisingly low, although they are not low enough to give penalties yet:
“vitamin_levels”: {
“calcium”: -70,
“iron”: -18,
“vitA”: -17,
“vitB”: -10,
“vitC”: -41
}

The ‘calcium’ is a bit of a surprise, as I have been eating quite a bit of offal and cheese sandwiches over the past week…
you need (e) for examine, then choose a direction. Lets you look at squares next to you, and take any items if present.

For future reference, if you are trying to put something away in an adjacent square, its (D) (note the capital). Then signify a direction
Thanks for the help! I knew (e) was to examine things, what I didn’t realise was that you use the same interface to pick things up from adjacent squares.

Holy Calcium Deficiency, Batman! Your bones must be Swiss cheese by now!
Actually, the absolute lowest value that Calcium can hit is -720, so you’re safe from osteoporosis for now. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pop Calcium Tablets if you find any, though.

If you’re getting +2 healthy_mod from vegetables sandwhiches, then your nutrient deficiencies might be enough to offset that. I’m not really sure how the nutrients impact health, but I’m reasonably sure that they do.

If you don’t have any Multivitamins, then the best thing you can do is to keep an eye on nutrient levels, and eat what is necessary.

If you quicksave, then you can check the updated .sav without having to quit the game. To quicksave you bring up the in-game options (Esc.) and press “Quicksave”, or just press the Hotkey, 9. After that you can navigate back to the .sav to check it again. Alt+Tab allows you to switch between active programs if you’re playing fullscreen.

So basically what i’m saying is: Check nutrients, Eat what you need, Quicksave (Esc. + 9), Atl+Tab to World Folder, Open .sav again to check nutrients (most text editors don’t refresh the current document to check for changes, so you’ll need to reopen the .sav each time you save in order to see the new values) , Eat what you need, rinse, repeat. It will probably take several days to actually see any improvement, so have patience. The worst thing that negative health scores can do is limit regen (at -100 you don’t heal at all), and healthy_mod determines resistance to diseases, so you don’t need to worry about dying from bad health.

I’ve never heard of any attacks directly impacting health, but I also haven’t see everything this game has to offer. What are you routinely getting attacked by? Just zeds?

Only unhealthy food, unhealthy drink, and a “leaky bionic” damage health. Did you have a lab start with faulty bionic?

There are also artifacts that damage health, some even just by having them in inventory. I think there’s something else that can damage health… but I can’t remember what it is. Stupid headache.

Can I ignore “enemy spotted” interruptions while grinding?

If you mean the “Monsters spotted! Stop crafting?”, and “You see the zombie approaching! Stop crafting?” notifications, then no (at least not to the best of my knowledge). You can just hold “Enter” to continuously say “no”, though.

I’m brand new - how do I use the canvas sack and a canvas bag I’ve found? Their descriptions suggest that I can store things inside them, but I can’t figure out how. They don’t seem to be wearable like the sling or such?

I think sack can be crafted into a swag bag. The smaller bag can’t be used for hauling.

The canvas sack is only useful in certain recipes (sack of concrete and such) - the bag can be turned into a swag bag (level 0 tailoring - no reason not to just have it COUNT as a swag bag, really), but it can also be attached to a vehicle as a container. Neither is really that useful.

Thanks folks. But I don’t see the swag bag in the crafting menu (or on the wiki, for that matter)?

Escape. Since escape now brings up the menu, effectively ‘pausing’ the game I mash down escape until I see the menu flicker on and off.

When doing the mission for the farming commune that needs you to bring 200 4x4s, where exactly do you need to put them? I have the 4x4s, but they are not accepting the mission as completed.

GENIUS

Drop them on the ground in the garage with the foreman. Anywhere within a couple of squares of the entrance should be fine.

How do I increase my construction skill from 1 to 2? It looks to me like the only construction that will give me xp is building a fence - is that right? If so, that’s a lot of two by fours to get to level 2…
