Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Thank you.

What’s a good defense against zombies at night then? Last time I’ve used a row of spiked pits, but then nothing other than scent was actually attracting them from afar. This here, I’ve got a bionic that emits 30 sound every half an hour, so I need something particularly strong. I’m currently at construction skill level 2. Will reinforced boarded windows + deep pits suffice?

A good enough defense is to sleep with a high value helmet on and let the come in.

If youre that worried, sleep in a car outside, get a throwaway car to ‘put’ inside, and or find a place with no zombies.

Pits will damage zombies, but you will still need to deal with them.

Unless you sleep underground - zombies don’t “get” vertical movement.

How do I get my companions to be more aggressive against hostile NPCs? My follower NPCs seem to only chase after/shoot hostile NPCs when they get really close(<5 tiles? Haven’t counted exactly yet). This is problematic against hostile NPCs with guns, since they tend to shoot at me from a distance(<15 tiles?) while my companions just stand there and watch me eat bullets. Even if they have guns, I’m hiding behind them, and the occasional bullet is striking them instead of me.

Are your NPCs set to only attack things nearby?
I may have set the distance scaling too high, but even with it, the guns should bump priority pretty high.
A good enough defense is to sleep with a high value helmet on and let the come in.
I need to have my noise-cancelling gear on, otherwise the sound from the bionic won’t let me fall asleep. That’s what I’m doing right now, pretty much - letting them come in. But once these tough zombies start changing into brutes and hulks, that’s when simply waking up and smacking them around won’t do the job and I’ll have to start thinking about these defenses.

It doesn’t matter where the zombies get attracted to, I just don’t want them to catch me off-guard and potentially kill us while we’re asleep. Whether in a car or not, the zombies will still BE there (wander spawns) - I need something to deal with them until I can remove the bionic, a thing I’m slowly progressing towards doing. Dealing with them is not a problem when I’m awake, I just don’t want a feral hunter to creep up on me while I’m napping (companion can’t spot zombies in the dark while guarding).

Yeah, if I can’t find a way to defend myself above-ground I’ll probably have to resort to sleeping underground again. I was just asking around to see how people defend their above-ground base early-game.

I drive my early game base outside of town.

And I sleep in stray beds if in a city. I dont make a base in town. Havent since 0.C My last base was by a megastore, and I remember more NPCs came by than zombies.

Is it possible to get NPC’s to read books on their own and not just over your shoulder? Just picked up a companion who has zero in every skill but bartering.

Trader Joe is that you?

Trader Joe is also good at kneecapping people and sucker punching your wallet

Few realize that due to his misspent youth with his cousin traitor Joe, trader Joe is also decent at backstabbing, and manipulative lying, which helps broker lucrative deals

So giving my companion a trench knife to start leveling piercing may have been a bad decision?

Trader Joe assures you it was a wise decision.

When you find a non-broken console and are asked if you want to hack it, should I wait to get to electronic 5 for that? Any clue?

computer skill. electric won’t help.

Yeah, Computers skill. And it depends on the console. The mine elevator consoles are super easy to hack but many of the lab consoles practically require like skill 6 or more to hack consistently. You could still get lucky with less of course. Not all consoles are equal, and not all functions (that the console is able to perform) are equal. Failure to hack has several harmless, mild or (in a few cases) a bit dangerous consequences.
