Been playing cat for over a year now, but Ive never had to (or felt inclined to) mess with vehicles. Now I do.
How does one operate a boom crane or a telescoping crane? There’s nothing that shows up in the driving menu that let’s me operate the crane. If there’s a vehicle help thread you guys could point me to, that’d be even better.
I desperately need this question answered. I was being fancy with my driving and am now trapped between two cars and a wall. I can’t accelerate enough to push the cars off or drive through the massive number of zed behind. I have a crane on the side where one car is. Thx - Veteran Noob
Edit: Z Hulks can really tear apart heavy frames quick. And how the hell do turrets work now?! I have two m134d-h mini guns that are loaded and won’t fire. I think I’ll have to torch my noobmobile soon. No way out.

Do you still need your question answered regarding how booms and engine cranes work? I can really only speak for booms.
You attach a steel boom to another vehicle. The boom is considered a frame, so you will only able to place it on an empty square. If it is within sight and a few tiles away, you will use it as necessary in vehicle construction. It seems the engine crane can be placed on a frame, as that is how I found one in a garage. You probably just need it next to you when you do the necessary vehicle work.
Don’t know about turrets.
Instructions unclear, hulk bits stuck in boom xD
Do I attach it to the vehicle I’m pulling?
Does the vehicle pulling it need a separate crane?
Edit: my dumb ass thought that cranes could be used to PULL other vehicles for clearing rod blocks and such xD. Welp, there goes my noobmobile. AND probably most of the NPC civvies I was transporting. Crapsticks.
Edit 2: How the hell do y’all with deathmobIles even get around? I can’t get through a city without being mobbed and stuck behind a damn well-placed bunch of cars. I can’t ram them without damaging all the hard earned (but currently useless) turrets and stuff on my noobmobile. Lost it to the mob while Frosty and company snuck away.

Haha. The steel boom and engine crane help in part removal/installation only.
You could install enough working wheels and an engine and drive the wreckage out of the way.
Personally, I try to avoid running things over. When I do, I try to go at a low speed. I think that the speed of the impact (the force) influences how much a vehicle is damaged. I think people have recommended going 20-30mph when hitting those speed bumps.

-
Up to which distance the game “simulates for real” actions from NPC and monsters? i.e if I leave on guard a NPC friend in an house, will he defend and fight for himself even if I go very far from him? Or past a distance the world simulation is frozen until I approach a bit of his position?
-
Why an item don’t always list what it can lead if disassembled? i.e knit hat can be disassembled to bandages, but this is not indicated in the item description[/quote]
-
It’s because of how is the % menu handled internally. It could be added, if enough people think it’s a good idea.
-
Between 60 and 72 tiles. Exact number depends on your placement on the map.
-
If it lists items it was made of, it will list those and not components. Otherwise it should always list the things it can be disassembled into and if it doesn’t that’s a bug.
Any way to charge a car battery? It’s been a while…
Get a working vehicle, install the battery, then use the alternator to charge the battery.
Do I knew a crowbar with prying 2 to open metal door or metal bars (like the ones in a gunshop) ?
That doesn’t move blockages fast enough to keep hulks from wailing on my rather frail noobmobile.
I just wish we had towing in the game already.

Installing solar panels anywhere, generators, jumper cables (best method for earlygame.)
You have to have the sturdiest vehicle. That means heavy frames, heavy quarterpanels, and most importantly, military composite armor, which you can salvage from relevant vehicles. Even then it’s not a cakewalk. You absolutely have to have a vehicle welding rig installed to repair the damages afterwards. I would recommend having the Vehicle Additions mod enabled. Because it contains a vehicle part called ‘shredder’. You install 1-5 of them to your car front. They’ll chew zombies to bits even at low speeds, and ESPECIALLY at low speeds, which is important.
And you can’t just drive through the hordes of zombies with complete disregard. You have to avoid the bigger groups. Also going slowly helps (10-30mph). Your vehicle will take a beating and that’s part of the business. Don’t keep critical parts in the front. Relocate your engines, fuel tanks and such to the back and center. Also know that not all zombies are equally capable of scrapping your vehicle. It’s the hulks and brutes you have to watch out for. The rest can’t really damage the military composite. You can basically sleep inside an armored car that’s surrounded by zombie children or dogs… IF you have hearing protection to make yourself deaf.
The boom crane is a bitch to figure out.
- First you need to craft a “steel boom”, and that requires a book recipe. You can also supposedly scavenge the part from some farm vehicle, called Excavator (saw it in the game files).
- Then you have to build a separate frame, and you’ll install the crane on THAT…
- …except not ON the frame but on an empty square next to the frame.
“Bottle jack” is also your friend, unless its capabilites aren’t enough for you.
Automated turrets are more a thing in the Vehicle Additions mod. You can still get a lot of destruction done with manual turrets. You just have to drive, stop, fire, repeat. Install turret on a spot that you can stand on. Make sure you’re not wielding anything. Then just stand on the same tile and hit ‘f’ to fire. 'E’xamine the turret to load/unload it. Unload all turrets you see in other vehicles in your travels to get a ton of ammo.
Metal doors can be destroyed with an acetylene torch.
Gun store metal doors can be picked with a lockpick.
Metal bars can be sawed through with a hacksaw.
Wooden walls can be destroyed (quite easily) with a sledge hammer or by driving a car through it.
Newly recruited noc asks me to bring him a book but he dont say which one.Is this quest bugged or there is particular book he asks for and which one?
Are bridges in the game or you must swim to get through the other side of a river?
Bridges have been around for a long time, Probably since Whales. They aren’t always the prettiest, but they they do exist, and are common place.

Thanks for the tips. Obvious as they may be, they still help as I’m a noob when in comes to vehicular survival. However, I won’t be making the noobmobile 2.0 any time soon as all my old lategame chars are dead. Serves me right for not playing for a month.
Actual newb question: how do zslaves work? I saw the option to “create zombie slave” in the late Frosty Noob’s tailor’s kit menu.
Also, is there a thread or something to see what experimental builds are less buggy/crashy and more stable?
I just had this huge revelation. Main Battle Tanks have 5 diesel engines. Now, think about what the skill requirements are for installing five engines? Exactly. Imagine the power that a stripped down tank has compared to a measly twin-engine death mobile. Why build a death mobile when you could just strip an MBT that likely has 3-5 working engines? o_O
It has still gotta be 7-14 days of work (pure part stripping) but I think it might be absolutely worth it!
Why do you need more than 1 engine?
The game cant proper simulate that.
Isn’t there a bug in current experimentals that prevents multiple engines from being used simultaneously?
There is. I just tried installing a foot crank on my dead RV in an attempt to charge the battery, and even though I could activate the crank once, once I stopped “driving” I could never select it again and the game would complain about the V6 engine not having enough battery charges to start up.
When selecting the active engine, I got shown something like this:
[ x ] V6 engine
[ x ] foot crank
(cancel option)
