Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!
e) is throw skill at 1 meaning I have now +1 to hit?
I’d like to elaborate on this one.
In melee, you have a “to hit” number, this is straight skill plus bonuses, so in that way, 1 skill is +1 to-hit, and 1 more skill it’s equivalent to, say, a weapon that is more accurate by +1. Stuff like encumbrance is then calculated, and your hit is rolled and compared to the enemy’s dodge, but that’s about it.

Torso encumbrance is what matters for melee to-hit, it’s a straight percentage loss of your to-hit (up to a cap of 75): a torso encumbrance of 50 means you loose half of your to-hit.

In ranged it’s rather more complex: how much (in angle) attacks spread from where you’re aiming is based on dispersion. Dispersion is not just based on the gun or the skill level, but also things like eye/arm encumbrance, burst firing or driving while shooting. Throwing is even less straightforward, your DEX, PER and STR come into play, as well as things like the item’s volume.

Still, for comparative purposes, a skill level is worth about -10 gun dispersion, 5% recoil reduction, and a variable amount of attack time reduction depending on the weapon type.
f) Not a diagram, but the general rule of thumb is to try and keep encumbrance around 20-40 on the torso if you don’t want to be constantly whiffing melee attacks. Each body location has four layers (close to skin, normal, worn over clothes, and strapped). If you have more than one item that wants to be on each layer, you suffer an additional encumbrance penalty. The first number is the base encumbrance, the second number is the penalty.
There’s also (at least on the experimental version), a waist layer. No, not a waist location, a waist layer. You can have, say, a waterskin on your torso’s waist, and a sheath for your knife on a leg’s waist slot, and they won’t conflict with each other, or your torso-strapped backpack, or your leg-strapped drop leg pouches.

What layer something uses can be seen on it’s description, as well as what bodyparts it covers. You can get an overview of where everything you have equipped is located by pressing ‘+’.

Y’know, the “special” kind of standpipe maintenance logs.
Garbage cans, last I checked.

Anywhere you can find trash. Garbage cans, street sweepers, blob pits, etc.

I have the skills to make that rifle out of the fusion blaster cbm but I can never find the recipe for it,even with high electronicics and most books.
So how do I get that recipe?

I can’t find the recipe in any of my books, so I think it’s auto-learned. Do you have fabrication 4?

Not anymore.last character got launched out of the office building second floor by a hill and landed on a river, drowning.
May attempt to locate the body one day.

Well, that was certainly a spectacular death.

Is there any way to get actual ammo out of placed turrets, like in science labs or military bases?

I feel kind of goofy letting them shot me so i can pick up the cases.

Empty grenades can sometimes shut down the turret instead of killing it and all its remaining ammo is yours.

Yes! An item called control laptop. Craftable. Requires high Electronics skill. You can turn turrets friendly with it, which in turn requires high Computers skill. After the turret shows ‘friendly’, you’ll then walk/bump into the turret, and the game asks “Deactivate turret? (y/n)”. After hitting ‘y’, you’ll get the turret and its remaining ammo. You can then also place the turret wherever you please.

I think you mean EMP grenades. :stuck_out_tongue:

EMP grenades are probably accessible way earlier than the control laptop. The turret can also turn friendly due to EMP blast, and you can then bump into the turret like above and you get the option to deactivate it. I recommend acting quickly because I think they turn back to hostile after some time, possibly soon. The control laptop however turns them permanently friendly. I’d suggest crafting like 10 EMP grenades. One can probably neutralize 1-2 turrets with them.

Hi,

new to this game, managed to get into a refugee center. There’s a lot of comfy beds but apparently I can’t sleep in them because the utility lights are always on. Is there something I can do to turn the light off? Or destroy them to create darkness?

There’s something called a blindfold, it’s super easy to craft and equipping it renders you blind until you take it off.

I’m not sure if it’ll work to block out the light but go ahead and try it.

A few assorted list of questions.

Static spawn + dynamic spawn. I understand now that dynamic means ‘moving hordes’. What I would like to know is basically: is there a point of clearing a large portion of the map (say a whole town, if that’s possible) of zombis? Will they be recreated from thin air or when they are gone they are gone … baring a moving hordes?

Is there a possibility to have NPC not sharing the same sprite as the player, and also to have NPCs using different sprites?
How a wounded NPC heals? Will he sleep and recover?

I’m uncertain of what is the usage of ‘focus’ regarding XP acquisition.

If I have roller blades or I’m running (or I’m running with roller blades), should the tile cost not be reduced?
How can I know if I’m moving over a proper terrain for roller blades?

How do I wash my cloth or clean blood on floor?

Dynamic spawns and moving hordes (also known as wander spawns) are actually different things. Dynamic spawn means that making loud sounds spawns zombies out of thin air nearby. Wander spawns adds moving hordes to the map and causes them to travel toward sources of noise that you make. You can have dynamic spawns but not wander spawns, and vice versa.

As for clearing a town with dynamic spawns, technically yes you can, but it’s going to take a lot of effort. With dynamic spawns on, each portion of the map has a “spawn pool” that, when you kill enough zombies to deplete it, stops spawning zombies from noise. But from what I understand, the spawn pool is very high and it’s no small feat to deplete it completely.

Is there a possibility to have NPC not sharing the same sprite as the player, and also to have NPCs using different sprites?

This depends entirely on the tileset you’re using. The ChestHole tileset allows for differentiation between the player and NPCs by actually showing the items you’ve equipped on them (so if you give a cowboy hat to your NPC friend, you’ll be able to easily tell which one is you and which one is him). Some other tilesets may have their own ways of doing this, as well.

How a wounded NPC heals? Will he sleep and recover?

NPCs who are actively following will sleep and heal, yes. You can speed up this process a little by telling followers to “sleep when they feel tired” instead of “stay awake”. By examining a follower you can also choose to use an item on them, which lets you use bandages/first aid kits/etc. to patch them up.

I'm uncertain of what is the usage of 'focus' regarding XP acquisition.

From the wiki: “Skills are raised upon practice (combat, crafting, tools usage). Practice is is multiplied by your current focus / 100; therefore focus pool level above 100 provides a bonus to the amount of skill gained, while amounts below 100 provide a penalty.”

The more focus you have, the faster your skills increase, with 100 being the “neutral” focus.

If I have roller blades or I'm running (or I'm running with roller blades), should the tile cost not be reduced? How can I know if I'm moving over a proper terrain for roller blades?

Not sure about these, sorry.

How do I wash my cloth or clean blood on floor?

Washing a cloth is done through the crafting menu (search for “rag”). Bloodstains on the floor will disappear with time but you can also get rid of them by using a mop on them.

Thanks a lot!

2 questions on containers.

Empty plastic bag can hold 6 liters, but I can’t add water to them, normal?

I think I bugged a toilet  I added onto it 10 doses of saline solution, and now the 2 liquids are in the same time. When I try to add to a plastic bottle some of the toilet water, it works until I validate and then it does nothing…

For the bags, imagine a regular plastic grocery bag. Now fill it with water. Now put it in your backpack. Its gonna leak EVERYWHERE, even if you tie it shut, and that’s assuming it just doesn’t tear. And then you can’t really get to the water to drink it with any level of ease. To get around that, the game requires a container be rigid and resealable to hold liquid.

Dunno about the toilet situation though.

ok thanks, so their storage capacity can’t be used, right?

How to change the clothes & armor of a friendly NPC?

Is their a storyline that can ‘win’ the game? I know of the missions of the refugee center, can they lead to a kind of ‘victory’? Yes, I’m one of these players that need a goal, even a distant and near impossible goal to achieve, to enjoy playing a game  If DDA is only about surviving another day until you die, I would be (just slightly) disappointed.

It can’t be used for fluids. The 6 liter capacity you see is how much additional storage space you’d get if you wore the bag, but for regular items like food, ammo, etc.

You need to get their trust high enough, then you should be able to outfit them. I’m not sure off the top of my head if you can select specific gear, or if they just wear the best things out of what they are given, but I believe its the former. I’ve never actually bothered sticking with an NPC long enough to figure out if this is the case, I’m sure someone else will have a more detailed explanation.

There’s no definitive “Win State”, nor does the game ever plan to make one, that I’m aware of. The different factions of NPC’s are supposed to eventually have more detail to them and their questlines, but for the time being there’s not much. As it stands, player goals are mostly personal, or roleplay-driven.

Waaay down the road, the old guard contacts do mention cities that apparently managed to wall themselves off and defend themselves. Maybe one day waaaaay off in the future, settling down in one of them could be an “Endgame” option. As it stands, said cities are just rumors. Unless the player built one themselves, I suppose. That might be a neat long term project.

Fair enough, thanks! I guess I’ll have to make my own goal, like building a walled community!

I realized that as there is no facing, you can’t one shot a zombie from behind, with a crossbow for example. The thing will see you coming and if you are not too good with the crossbow, “aim precisely” takes too long before it reaches you.

How can I move a chair?

Bear traps are also a fun option.

Make sure to doublecheck your arm, eye and hand encumbrance. The first two affect your accuracy, and you might manage to get away with something faster than “precise” if you reduce it, the later affects your reloading speed.

…or just practice against something harmless until your skill doesn’t suck.
