Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

That works too, I guess.

Or do it the elven way. Free cooked creep.
Pemmican is the ultimate from what I remember. What was it? Tallow and fruit?

Lasts forever and actually is good as food unlike aspic.

Anyway, I could do with some general advice. I did the “sheltered survivor” start and I have a shelter in the forest with food in it but not a lot else. (Though there are crates in there I’m going to make a crowbar to look inside of.)

There are two mansions nearby and a crapload of books. The trouble is, it’s winter and it’s bloody cold. I’m currently trying to make warm enough clothes to avoid frostbite. Luckily the first mansion has a gun room with some firepower in it.

But basically I’m not sure what my priorities should be. Ideally I need to make proper winter gear I suppose…

I’d like to just make a fireplace and sit by it reading the survival and crafting books, but I can’t find any rocks to make the fireplace with! Maybe this is because it’s winter and they’re under snow? Or because I’m in the forest? I don’t know.
There is no ‘snow’ layer. Forest has less rocks. Usually more in the open.

I would find a few rocks, make a stone shovel. (may need to make a stone hammer first). Dig a pit outside of a window or door. I don’t mean a shallow pit, I mean the one you take damage from. I usually leave the square outside of the door/window dirt and dig 1 out from it. Then all around the sides and diagonal. You can cover a pit with a Board to walk in/out. Just examine the pit with a 2x4 nearby or in inventory.

Then sit in the doorway and read, and you shouldn’t burn the house down, and zombies will fall into a pit before getting to you. If your feeling even paranoid. Make some skewers I think and you can make spiked pits. You make even be able to sit 1 more back. Ideally make a bed 1 square back, with a bunch of blankets piled on it. I think a fire will give vision for 3 squares or so to read.

Why did the only two NPCs my character has seen so far tried to kill him?
One had a handgun with 100 rounds of ammunition, but he never took a shot at me.
The @ was red on both him and the other NPC.

Do you have random NPCs on? Alternatively, was the NPC described as a bandit or thug?

1 time npc atacked me with pneumatic assault rifle and he tried to attack me in mele with it

i stabed him to death with pocket knife

Yeah, random NPCs were on, but their spawn rate was set to 0.25.

They still spawn over time, and randomly-spawned NPCs have a chance of being pissy jackasses that do things like yell at you to scram (and turn hostile if you stick around), try to rob you, etc.

If I tell an NPC to guard, will they sleep and such? Experimental 2d80646 if that matters.

Just asking because I feel like leaving one of my companions home as an RP type thing, but have no idea if they’ll take the time to sleep and such.

Aaaand while I’m at it, in another world(before my rampant deleting-ness deleted it) I made a bulletin board and told an NPC to go to it, essentially, and afterwards I could no longer take them with me. Is that a feature or a bug? Same experimental as above.

I don’t think guards sleep at the moment.
NPCs outside reality bubble (area of roughly 60 tiles radius centered on player) don’t do anything, don’t get tired, don’t regenerate etc.

Not being able to take a NPC back sounds like a bug.

I see. Well, I don’t have said world sadly. Apologies, proooobably would’ve helped squash a bug XD

If I ever feel like I’m about to delete my current world, will probably do the bulletin board thing and upload to save to be looked at.

Uhoh.

I’m out of food and basically can’t find anything to eat except dead giant bees. And hopefully their honey if I can work out how to actually obtain it.

Winter start without a town nearby seems awfully unfair.

Kill them, cook the meat. Eat all the jerky.

Is it a good idea to eat that irradiated apple?
Like, will my character suddenly grow webbed feet or extra appendages if I do?
Something about devouring a piece of fruit that’s been bombarded with gamma rays (or what have you, I’m no nuclear physicist) seems a little…sketchy.

Derp. Unlike in Fallout, it’s safe to eat. >_>

Does cooking it actually increase the nutrient value? I found that just eating the dead bee meat after butchering hardly did anything and I was still stuck on “famished” after devouring several bees.

Edit: Derp. It most definitely does. I’ll cook as much as I can. If I can avoid getting destroyed by the bees.

Still, I really need another food source and I’m not sure what to do for one. Pine cones are around here but they seem to need a ridiculous amount of work for very little benefit.

Eating raw meat is also less healthy, bad for morale, and can make you sick. >_>

I was only resorting to that because of extreme urgency.

Anyway it turns out Honeycomb is amazing.

I have food for the moment. I also met my first Mi-Go…

Seems like what I need to do is make some clothing which is warm without encumbering me a ridiculous amount. I’m wearing about a billion layers at the moment.

But meanwhile I need water water and more water. And I can’t seem to find a big container to hold it.

I wish I had a jerry can and a water purifier…

I’m a little stuck at the moment because I’m not sure in what order I should be trying to craft things. Since I was last playing the crafting equipment required got more complicated…

Any tips?

I need thread but can’t find strings in the local mansion windows (I’m guessing because they don’t open / don’t have blinds).

I need a way of making fire when my matches run out. I suppose a fire drill will need to do.

And I need super warm and protective gear but it seems to make some wool items you need spinning wheels and such equipment. Which I have no idea how to obtain.

Hah!
Blinds are for peasants.

So uh… basically I’m in the middle of a huge forest with a field area, two mansions I’ve pretty much cleaned out of everything useful, a LMOE shelter with some ammo, and… a bee hive.

So I have a crossbow, a short bow, a flintlock carbine, and possibly one or two other guns with ammo. A CRAPLOAD of honeycomb and wax, a few rocks, lots of wood, and all the dead bee I can eat.

What do I do with this? Where are you when I need you, MacGuyver!?

There doesn’t even seen to be a road around here let alone the parts to make a vehicle. There’s a FEMA camp up in the far north but I’m not sure what to expect from one of those places.

Best option is to sweep the area and hope you find a road. As for a vehicle…not much you can do. Best thing is to dismantle furniture for wood and nails, make a stone/makeshift hammer, and make a pair of wooden frames for a vehicle. One as the base frame, the other for a wooden box.

Then at least you can carry your loot, a bit more than otherwise.
