Is foraging completly random?
It would make sense to have batches of certain plant/berry etc instead of randomly generating one every time you examine a bush or shrub.
Do realise it would kill CPU to pre-generate these at worldgen, but how about pre-generated batches?
Yes, it’s random.

It might be doable. Maybe not at worldgen, but at mapgen (ie. not on overmap, but when generating submaps). Each overmap tile could have stored weights for plants located there and then underbrushes foraged there would generate drops only from those plants.
That way it would be relatively easy to implement and would do more or less what is expected (ie. if you found dogbane here, you can expect some more dogbane nearby, but there could easily be entire areas devoid of it).

It would also mitigate delicious savescumming.

Then again, I can’t recall ever savescumming just for foraging. There are much more important things to reserve cheating for. XP

Hello everyone!

This is the first time anyone of my characters has been very successful and I have a few questions so I don’t die.

 1. How come I keep missing zombie children? I can hit every other type of zombie except this one. It just says “you swing wildly and miss” (I think it might be my 68 torso encumbered)

 2. Are there any good uses for alcoholic drinks? I robbed a couple liquor store and I have massive stock piles of beer and wine.

 3. I have a nice little mini van type vehicle with 19% and 6% battery. How far could 19% gas get me, and how to I raise the battery stats.

 4. What do I use drugs for? I have pretty large amounts of Meth, crack, cigarettes, and weed. I also have a small hemp seed farm.

 5. How do I raise my mechanics skill to install/remove parts from cars?

Thanks in advance!

I’m no expert, but I can answer some of your questions:

1: Zombie children, being small, are pretty agile (for a zombie). Your encumberance is high enough that it will give you a fairly hefty penalty to your to-hit rolls, yes. Together, you will have a moderately tricky time hitting zombie children. To fix this, you should level your melee skill, and try using a more accurate weapon (one with a bigger bonus to hit). EDIT: Also, try lowering your torso encumberance. 68 is really, really high - I rarely go above mid 20s until I have endgame level armour, that is WORTH the encumberance costs.

2: The main use I can think off is making molotovs. I don’t use many myself, but some people swear by them. And if you are taking on a horde, they can certainly up your chances greatly. If you have the Ethanol Burner CMB, you can also use them to power Bionics.

3: No clue, I don’t do vehicles. Sorry.

4: Stimulants (like meth) are GREAT - they give short boosts to your combat stats. If you find yourself backed into a corner, taking a hit of meth can save your life by greatly increasing your combat ability. Stuff like weed is much less useful - its really only good for morale. Morale’s main use is generating Focus, which is needed to gain Exp. Basically, being in a good mood makes you level faster, drugs can put you in a good mood. Risky though.

5: I think you can get some mech skill by doing stuff like repairing metal items with a soldering iron… but by far the most common way is to find the book “Under the Hood”. Its pretty common, and can raise your mechanics skill to 3. You only need mechanics 1 to install/remove from cars.

Hope this helps!

Oh, another use for Drugs - Stimulants also increase your mental stats by quite a bit. The intelligence boost they give can be very useful in installing CMBs. Installing CMBs takes no time, so you can instal dozens of them in one drug fueled binge.

 1. Yes, it’s the encumbrance.
 2. Making molotovs, disinfecting rags for bandages (you need first aid skill for that), using as a painkiller, boosting morale a bit, helping you fall asleep
 3. 19% is enough to go from one city to the other. Disassemble fridges until you get a rubber hose, you can then use it to siphon gas from other vehicles. Battery will recharge while the engine is active and has an alternator attached.
 4. Meth gives big boost to stats, but makes you very tired. Crack boosts stat a bit, but not nearly as much. Cigarettes give a small boost to stats. Weed helps you fall asleep and protects from vomiting, but drops your stats. All drugs boost morale a bit.
 5. Use crowbar on windows/doors, install easier parts, read books, pick locks, use soldering iron on items

Thanks for the replies everyone! The community here is awesome!

I just have one more question on encumbrance I have a MBR vest (steel plating) with 40 encumberment, but it offers 30 bash protection and 38 cut protection. Is the encumberment worth it?

Edit: Didnt want to spam this forum so ill ask here.

Can I repair my nail bat? I just made it and its pretty beat up.

Usually not. MBR is quite good when empty.

You need a basic repair kit or a toolbox (both quite rare), but there is a minor “exploit” (a quirk of crafting system): find some nails and craft a nail bat. It will be repaired.

I think ceramic plates are decent at least, if I recall. And empty MBR is…hmm. How encumbering relative to the kevlar vest, I forget…

Hmm I think it might have been fixed. I have more than enough nails and I have my nailbat. But It still says I need a baseball bat. Thanks for the help though.

Meh, they really aren’t TOO bad… I’ll occasionally deal with a fungal tower or a fungal bloom even early in the game. Catch them when it’s not raining, set it on fire, and you’re 75% done.

Now, fungal flowers require some serious firepower, and if any of it’s near a river, just bloody FORGET it… but seriously, fix the river problem, and only fungal flowers will be late-game-only.
in the last 10 games in .C near the area I start there is a tower, a bloom or something else fungal surrounding it. ALL OVER.

the amount is WAY too much considering it spreads. I drove for 3 days once to finally get away from that crap… days of driving…

Exactly why blacklisting it is Fun. owo

I’ll probably figure out how to do that in my next world.

I’m determined to make a few barrels of serum in this world and try out mutation chains, (no thresholds).

Anyone know a good way to train cooking when you can’t find skill books? Or is it like driving where you basically need a book to level it?

At level 0, just boil water, boil salt water into salt, and cook meat.
At level 1 good options are herbal tea, fruit leather, fruit juice, flatbread, starch, or even bone broth.
At level 2 you can go for tallow, tainted tallow, V8, broth, various soups, flour, superglue, etc.
At level 3 you’ve got jerky and that alone will just make your day.

Is it possible to inflict mutations on monsters or NPCs by throwing mutagen flasks at them?
Is it possible to inflict mutations on NPCs by any means? (radiation?)

That would probably end you up with a broken flask and an unpick-up-able unit of mutagen at the NPCs feet.

Most mutations don’t handle non-player “owners” well. Debug options still allow mutating NPCs, though.

Ooh, so if I debug Genetically Unstable onto an NPC…?

Hey guys, what are pistol’s shotguns and rifles do you guys mainly use… not laser powered
