Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

As far as I know, NPCs can’t go up/down stairs, nor can they spawn in 0 z-level of the lab.
Static NPC and start on level 0, so the NPC does too. Leastwise I’ve seen that happen once or twice.

Is there a recommended procedure for when experimental builds throw errors?

Get thee to the Garage or the Git issue tracker and let us know about it, please. Version you’re using (the build number helps; the hash is the most-recent commit so is better), operating system, and any information you’ve got on what led to the crash, etc.

OK! Any specific tips on things to make notes of (e.g. visible mobs in area)?

Basically, whatever helps reproduce the error/crash. If you have a save nearby and can say “do X stuff for error/crash”, that’s ideal: throw the save on the cloud and post a download link for us. If it’s not that reproducible, at least note what you were doing. Critters in the area may help, especially if the error was related to 'em.

Obviously, include the actual error message if it’s a game-generated one (pink text overlaying the window in immersion-destroying fashion). Possibly not-so-obviously, windows error messages are unhelpful: they don’t tell us what’s screwing up.

Thanks for helping us make DDA less buggy, especially as we’ve started the freezing for 0.C.

Hint: wait for the night.

If you can’t figure anything out, here’s a complete guide: http://www.wiki.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?title=Guide:_Lab_Challenge
Sorry thought I mentioned but I guess I spaced I saved and went up the stairs at 12:30 or some such PM and it shot me up, the level is lit up. Guess I just keep all the loot moving down with me until I can find a real way out. 2nd level hasn’t given any trouble so far. Shes killed 3 manhacks, a hazmat zom, norm zoms and blob+littles(originally another haz I think) just by (throwing) tantrums of Butcher knives and a wrench and a whip she found.

The turret has its own field of light, but it doesn’t reach the stairs in the night, not even when it’s a fully moonlit night.
Lightning can light up the entire level, but only for one turn.
Did you have a source of light on yourself while going up the stairs?

Most of the labs are only escapable by going upstairs and wrecking the walls/teleporting away.

Is it somehow possible to disassemble wheels?

Balls, since when have the mansions been haunted?!?
Won’t sure as hell be sleeping in one!
Ever heard of House of The Dead?
Which is why I won’t be sleepin in one!

I have a couple of questions:
First off, how do the jumper cable mechanics work exactly? I know how to use them, put them on cars ect, but say for instance, when i got a car hooked up to my RV, does the cable actively charge my RV or does it have to be on in order to use the fridge or kitchen unit?

Second, is it possible to install some kind of light inside of a RV that will run off the battery so i can have a light on at night?

Lastly, when im attacked by zombies, how come when i have a riot helmet on my head that is also padded with leather, the only damage i take is to the head. For instance the rest of my body’s health is still green and mostly full, but my head is in the yellow and damaged?

 1. It will equalize charge between two vehicles over time. You can use a solar farm with a ton of batteries to charge an electric car for instance. You can’t top up your RV by hooking up to random cars since those are likely to have less charge and will drain yours instead.

 2. Vehicle controls now come with dome lights which will give enough light to work by in a couple of tiles. Alternatively, install a floodlight.

 3. Check your coverage. Your face is probably unprotected and they’re hitting you in the mouth / eyes.

 3. Im wearing a riot helmet that has covers 95% of my head, theres a plastic screen that also protects my face thats attached to the helmet, im also wearing sunglasses and a mouthpiece on top of that, i still dont really understand.

I got a minor radiation mutation. Is there any way i can get rid of it or do i just have to add iodine tablets to my diet (because in that case i would die within a week)

It’s not deadly. Most of the time it should only result in small stat penalty and occasional vomiting. Stay away from all other sources of radiation, though - the mutation overpowers the regular radiation regeneration and your only natural way to drop radiation is through the radiation-induced vomiting (and mutations by radiation, if you’ve got that on).

Jumper cables transfer power when it’s produced or consumed. If your car tries to consume power when it has none, it will try to get it from the cable. Same if it has full storage (or no storage) and it produces power.

Could be just bad luck. You’re never safe until you’ve got 100% coverage armor on all bodyparts.

Does having this radiation thing mean that i can’t sleep anymore? Because since i have had it i haven’t been tired in 4 days…

I don’t think the two are directly related, but if you are a walking pile of radiation, chances are you are getting many mutations rather quickly. You may want to regularly check your mutations for changes. I think you have probably developed some mutations that reduce your need to sleep.

I’ve read all of the traits and i’m pretty sure i don’t have any that do.

Drunk any atomic coffee/used caffeine pills recently? Minor radioactivity shouldn’t affect your sleeping powers.

Is there anything one can do to stop from getting paralized by brute/zombie eletric shock?

Wear an ANBC suit. I think there are some other types of armour that help against electricity, too. Generally I’d recommend getting behind cover and luring a shocker to where you’re at, then shotgun it to the face.
