Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Deconstructing things will get you up to 1 rank in Construction; I recommend it because it’ll also get you a lot of materials. For something to spam to go from 1 to 2, fence tiles take 5 minutes to make and use 5 two-bys and 12 nails (you’ll only get some of the materials back when smashing a fence tile, so have plenty).

Hey Allison, I have my construction skill now at 1 but I cannont buld a fence and I don’t know why, I have all the materials and I am outside, but still it is not available to me??

Oh yeah, I forgot they take a tiny bit of prep. Apparently you have to make fence posts before you can put fencing proper on a tile. They don’t require any skill and only consume two pointy sticks, though. Also you’ll need a digging tool; a stone shovel will do if you don’t have anything better.

My personal preference for grinding construction is as follows, it is not the quickest way, but it allows you to gather loads of resources in the meantime, and doesn’t use up any nails which is quite important for my shelter starts:

0-1 Dig pits, till soil, board up broken windows in my base. In the meantime raise survival skill to 3, so that you can craft stone axe.
1-2 Chop lots of trees and turn trunks into logs.
2-3 Chop any remaining trunks into planks.

Once level three is reached, I rarely bother raising construction any longer, but when I do - log walls are nice nail-less construction to grind.

Raising construction from 3 to 10 can now be achieved by making gigatons of charcoal in the constructed kiln. Though that requires getting a backpackful of rocks and 3 construction first.

That sounds weird. How can making a lot of charcoal make you into a skilled builder?

The same way making lot of socks makes you into a skilled tailor.

Not true. Socks can only bring your tailoring till 1.

IRL it can’t, but neither can chopping trees down and then making them into planks.
Charcoal making just picks up the role as possible source of grinding construction, because IRL it’s a process that requires quite a bit of skill to do properly.

Construction is one of those skills that have no good way of grinding it without books and has kinda useless higher levels. Adding a way to level it without explicitly grinding (as in, repeating the same action purely for the purpose of leveling) could make the underused skill less underused.

Moving it to cooking could make more sense, but then there would be no positive side effect of people training construction without hunting for books.

But then you can reinforce them and that doesn’t have that limitation. By repeatedly reinforcing and dismantling foot rags you can grind it up to 10.

Hello again, I have a question about the police bots. Where do they come from and how can I stop them from appearing. I just started a game and already had to kill 3 in a row at my hide out place: the one where survivors build themselves a shelter with a fireplace buth all turned to zombies. How can I deal with them effectivly. My gun is running out of ammo.

thanks!

Kill the eyebots, they’re summoning the police and riot bots.

Thank you very much for the answer. I have suspected those pesky buggers.

Do rivers block the spread of the fungus?

Yes and no.
Fungaloids can walk under water, but I don’t think spores can take root in water.

How do you guys go about breaching military bunkers? I tried several things but in the end the most efficient seemed to just wear a power armor and melee those turrets (other methods: tunneling downstairs from outside, shooting turrets with explosive weapons without getting LOS).

Same as what you do. Punching the turrets seems to be the most cost/time efficient option.

I used a Mosin-Nagant. It was a snap.

How do I activate mutations?

With the [ key.

I think you mean the military outpost where turrets are on the outside. In the bunker they are in niches inside the building and you can’t get LOS on four of them without getting very close (close enough to die in one volley wearing survivor gear).
