Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Did you find a rain coat? Those things are life savers.

But not for acid rain.

I lost my first semi-successful character that way (Finally, a vehicle! Let’s get out of this hellhole of a town! Wow, driving is kind of hard and fun, but I’m finally out exploring! Oh! A muffler laying here out in the woods! I REALLY need that! It’s raining acid, but I think I’ll go out to grab it with this super-protective rain coat! Well, that wasn’t that hard! Now I only have to get back into the car, I’m just one tile away after al-- GAME OVER)

EDIT: Also, about cars and roofs, you’ll need to keep also the roof next to the driver’s seat to protect you from rain. Roof or door or board, whatever, but they need to be “supported” by another structure.

I meant for the normal rain you mentioned. You said that, along with acid rain, that it was endlessly trolling you.

I think fire only burns when you are nearby. That explains why it never went out. It is due to the way the game is implemented.

I recently found a way to see smokers. If I manage to get them to walk near a fire they are visibly through their smoke. One way to do this is to use a molotov cocktail, though at 1 molotov per smoker, it is hardly a good way to kill them en masse if you’re clearing a small area due to the volume and weight. So I’ve recently made a flame thrower to rectify this problem. Not too sure on how practical it is though as I don’t know how much fuel I need to carry for a good numher of smokers.

I can say however that infrared is a godsend, but arrows don’t seem to penetrate thick smoke all that well though.

What do you guys do when dealing with smokers?

I handle smokers by…

Playing an older version.

Just nailed a Fungal Spire for the first time last night. 02Feb.

Things I’d have wanted to know:

  1. Throw the Molotov first. Throwing 5 does not let them go over the fungaloids.

  2. The Flamethrower is functionally a short-ranged incendiary rocket launcher. Do not use it at point-blank range.

  3. The Fungal Spire is immune to fire damage. Its Walls are not. Go ahead and light the bloom to clear the walls, the terrain, and the mooks.

Took some notes on the Marloss too. Short version: rather rare, and though potentially the best morale source in the game…but if you get Marloss Carrier, eat them someplace you don’t care about.

Just found out that smokers exploding don’t actually hurt me directly. I must have mistaken the molotov exploding on the smoker as the explosion the smoker makes since it died in the exact same turn.

Yeah I was thrown off by that at first too. Freaked out and wondered how bad I got maimed, then realized that “explode” isn’t the best word (unless they’re meant to actually explode and hurt you, then it is the right word and just not coded fully as of yet).

Now I tend to imagine more of a “the smoker exploded puffed out of existence like a cartoon genie in a kids movie!”

I think the explosion might still be a loud sound and attract zombies to you though, so I’m not sure if puffed out wouldbe the best description.

I recall there were hypothesis about a few suicide bombers in Iraq where someone was able to go tbrough high security check points without alerting them to a bomb. The intended target was a senior official. However, though the bomb did go off quite close to the official, he was relatively unharmed. The guess was that the suicide bomber had the explosives inside of himself, but while this allowed him to slip past security, the blast wasn’t all that powerful due to the soft and squishy material surrounding it.

Also, I just found a motor cycle and began to make small modifications. Why can’t I put a steel plate in front of the front wheel?

you can only attach things connected to frames. Think like a tree. you need at least a steel frame to the side of the wheel in order to attach something in front ( assuming diagonal paths work)

Can I put the fram on the wheel itself?

Or can I take off the front wheel and out it on the back? Will it cause stability issues?

Edit 1:Just found out what all those bullet construction things are for, now I can extend my ammo stocks by taking apart all the bullets I don’t use.

Edit 2: Found out driving in a circle gives massive amounts of experience. A great way to level.

Don’t believe wheels can have frames. Just steel plating etc. you can check it on the build screen when you highlight over the wheel. Also you have to have 2 wheels for a vehicle. Sorry no unicycle motorbikes. Make sure you repair things in the yellow. Don’t want your engine to explode as well as wheels. The first upgrade you should do is add plating to wheels for more support.

Nice bullet tip. I didn’t know that

Now my question: How can i increase the “game window” (the screen with the @ character as well as the Z) not the stats or dialogue. Increasing the view ports in settings in the option menu just messes up the text and doesn’t help at all.

Hello. Is there a way to make screenshot of entire map?

Step 1: Open map
Step 2: Press PrtScrn button
Step 3: Open Paint
Step 4: Paste
Step 5:???
Step 6: Save image

And thats how you get screenshots for pretty much anything that doesn’t have a built in screenshot function

I am wondering what are bones used for? I got a load of them from butchering animals and have no idea what I can do (if anything) with them.

Bone needles. You can also nom 'em.

Aren’t bone needles just a way to train your survival? Sewing kits aren’t exactly rare.

Stone hammers (surv0) and digging sticks (surv1) seem to fill that role instead. That and butchering animals, as always.

Bone needles actually require 3 survival. So, if anything, they are the goal, not the means to train your survival skill. Although you’re right about sewing kits being quite common. Not to mention indispensable if you want to adjust your clothes (bone needles can’t be used for this purpose).

Also, you can eat bones. The same with fluid sacks (the vegetable equivalent). While not too nutritious they aren’t perishable. So, an excellent option when no other food is available.

I’m pretty sure you can use bone needles to adjust clothing, actually. My current character only has a bone needle, and has made stuff fitted. Plus, both sewing kits and bone needles use the same on-use function in the code (iuse::sew).

That information was based in TDW’s notes either for the changelog or his commit when he added this feature, but I haven’t tried personally to verify this. I might have misread that or this restriction was removed later (or mentioned but not implemented).
