Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

I suspect that TDW implicitly meant “sewing kits and other relevant things” (since bone needles act as sewing kits in all ways that I know of).
Stone hammers (surv0) and digging sticks (surv1) seem to fill that role instead. That and butchering animals, as always.

Bone needles actually require 3 survival. So, if anything, they are the goal, not the means to train your survival skill. Although you’re right about sewing kits being quite common. Not to mention indispensable if you want to adjust your clothes (bone needles can’t be used for this purpose).

Also, you can eat bones. The same with fluid sacks (the vegetable equivalent). While not too nutritious they aren’t perishable. So, an excellent option when no other food is available.
The thing is, Stone hammers need strings to be made, so training in this way consumes your resources. I usually start with 1 point spent in survival, and getting to surv 3 isn’t difficult, and when I get to 3 my learning rate of survival skyrockets because of all the animal bones I can make into bone needles. And I really don’t need more than one.

Note that butchering zombie corpses trains your survival as well. I also think that sewing kits are heavier than bone needle.

Stone hammers can also use sinews or plant fibres instead of string. But to start getting them you need some survival skill. So, yes, that leaves just butchering to get to 1 to avoid this catch 22.

Yes, I shouldn’t have limited butchering to animals. And nope, both weight the same (0), although the sewing kit is bulkier (vol 2). So you’re better off with just using bone needles by now. That will eventually change, though, as it was mentioned that all these makeshift items are planned to perform worse in a(n undetermined) future release.

Sorry, I meant volume and not weight. I never have problems with weight, but volume is trickier to manage, which is nice. I like not being able to fight well, and feel warm and carry stuff at the same time. Nice detail.

If you play with specials on, always butcher special corpses. Trains survival.
And stops Necros rezzing brutes and hulks.

Butchering shockers seem to be well worth while, I got a freaking TELEPORTATION UNIT butchering one I have never seen them anywhere before let alone used one, not installing it yet only 57% chance for me atm that sort of percentage is the game setting you up for a massive troll.

On the subject of shockers, are burnt out bionics of any use?

No

Dude, if you’re going to post shit, then at least post shit that’s more than a single line and a giant image.

If I write some code that expands the stuff you can make via archery, would there be a chance that it gets in?

Edit: I’ve also found out the reason that I sometimes find myself in a great amount of pain and heavily hurt is that clusters of tiles that are on fire can hurt you if you stand too close, but nit directly on top of them. Good thing though is that small fires seem exempt from this, only normal fires and raging fires have this issue.

What do you guys burn or do so that your fire stays on for long periods of time? I’ve been using wooden arrows recently due to their abundance and ease of crafting. I haven’t noticed the burn time being all that different and it seems more economical in terms of wood. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case for lighters. I’ve almost used up an entire lighter already and in my current world they don’t seem to be as abundant as my other games

Random tip I just found out that I’ve never seen anyone talk about:

(E)xamine chain link fences to climb over them.

Mind=blown.

I mentioned it in the release notes of the version I added chainlink fences in.

Ok boys, I’ve got an interesting situation

I’ve got a military outpost setup as my full base. it has two buildings within it, attached together.

One of the buildings has a door, but the other one doesn’t!
The walls are concrete. how do I get into the other house? I’d like to turn it into an oven room for rainy days.

I have a sledgehammer, but that doesn’t seem to be able to smash it down.

I’ve also got some dynamite, but I don’t know how I’d use it without blowing the whole place up.

Any thoughts on how to make a door?

Without explosives, then you need to find a jackhammer get some gasoline for it and you can 'a’pply it to a piece of wall to get trough.

If you’re really determined, you could make a vehicle capable of smashing through the walls, too. It would be quite an extreme solution to the problem, and if you only want to take out on tile of wall, you’re gonna have to make a very precise battering ram, but I bet it’s doable with relatively little engineering skill!

Is there any way to keep meat from rotting? I have tons of it after killing a cougar, but when I got home the cooked meat in the fridge was rotted.

Sadly not. But if you’re getting that much meat from a cougar, you’re probably fine to get more. Just walk outside, make a big noise if necessary, and kill the first animal to come your way (if you can’t be bothered to wait, throwing a rock at a rabbit is a good way to get meat quick).

Just killed and butchered a rabbit for the first time. Now how do I cook its meat? I have a bunch of cheap lighters and there are some houses nearby with ovens (but I don’t want to go back there until nighttime).

Get some heavy sticks or other burnables, apply the lighter to the burnables and the craft.

First off ovens don’t work. There is no power so they are just there for decoration.

If you light a fire (a)pply a lighter/matches to a piece of wood (break a bench) you’ll also need something to cook your dinner with. Frying pan/Pot/Wooden spear all work for cooking meat.

Press & (crafting menu) and move over to “Food” and it’ll tell you everything you need.

They function as fire places. I’ve lit fires on them and they seem to be able to contain them.
