Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Any tips for someone who wants a less hardcore way of saving the game? do i just copy the save folder thats in the cataclsm one?

What do you mean?

hey again Dal. What ya mean man?

press S, you get an option to save the game and quit. it saves the game, so when you load game next time it’s there.

what i mean is i’d like to be able to have a permanant save instead of when you die thats it game over.

you just move the save somewhere.

How do i open locked crates? And those pesky reinforced glass doors. my computer skill is 2 so i cant hack em open. maybe bash or shoot my way through? i do have a 40mm greande launcher with concusive ammo…

You can bash crates open but that can break its contents. Use a crowbar to pry it open.

As for the glass… Well, a mininuke should just about do it. Alternatively try driving a car or semi through.

Hey, guys. Can anyone tell how the Z spawn depends on noise I make?

AFAIK the more the noise the shorter the timers between spawn waves get.

As I understand it, small noises simply attract zeds within a given area (e.g smashing windows, smashing doors, small-calibre gunshots.) IIRC a smashed window could be heard up to 20-50 tiles away (so, about 1-2 map tiles? not too sure.)

Large noises shorten the spawn timer. (SMG full auto, unsilenced rifles, Shotguns, big engines, crashes, explosions and fires etc.) Shotguns in particular are so loud they seem to pop some zeds instantly but don’t quote me on that, I’m still new to this myself.

Not sure why we have shriekers AND boomers right now… unless shrieker screaming travels further than boomer explosions, because at this point boomers are still worse-- there’s no way to stop them exploding, while you can kill a shrieker at range before it opens its big yap.

looks like they will be reducing Zed LOS in the next version, not sure about hearing. I think it would be nice to see a zed or two milling about infront of a store, then you throw a radio (on) somewhere and they lurch off to follow it.

thx! And, will they despawn if I live town or something? Or they will wait there forever after spawn once?

Radios work that way already. You can use it to lure them to traps, or whatever you can think of. But I’m not sure if they work with mobs you have already aggroed.

It does if you break line of sight, and are far enough for them to ignore the smell trail and head for the radio, but this doesn’t happen often.

Also dear lord but I just burnt down a house with a horde. Clearing entire towns at once is pretty damn fun.

Now as I took hp ignorant I hope my torso isn’t too badly hurt :S

Does anyone have some general survival tips when you managed to survive the first day and got out of town?

I found a bubble car who is terribly slow but luckily runs on plutonium so doesn’t need much gas… And so it hardly makes any noise at all, too bad it looks absolutely funky and with 4 seats needs some serious overhauling to be useful.

I also found a farmstead with a river quite close next to it. Are rivers safe sources of water do drink from, or do I need to purify/heat that too? It’s a real chore having to clean water without having any carboys for mass storage.

Another thing, is it possible to start fires without needing lighters? Any Bear Gryllian way of starting cheap fires?

Another final thing, is it possible to mass move items lying on the ground? I chopped down some trees and those logs are all nice and dandy, but my guy isn’t named The Hulk and I can’t put them all in his backpack. Can I mass move those logs somewhere else or am I forced to carry one at a time?

I really want to start a self sustaining outpost where I got fresh water and food and not a care in the world, and try to keep away from the cities save for a few loot runs.

Water that hasnt been purifyed has a change of giving you food poisoning. Unfortantly boiling it and putting in cayboys or jerrycans is the best way of doing it. You can also fill bottles with it but obviously it doesnt hold nearly as much as a jerrycan.

You need a lighter to start fires.

Nope, the only way you can move more is by getting more clothing to increase your volume. When moving things, your weight limit doesn’t really matter. If you go over it then you will just move slower so it all comes down to what you are wearing.

Archery. Archery is a fantastic skill for surviving out in the wild. Once you get a bow you have effectly unlimited ammo for it since you can carve wood into 10 arrows. With high enough archery you will have a silent weapon that can take out all kinds of zombies (skeletons are immune to arrows it seems. Brutes and Hulks will pose problems untill you get decently high archery) Another thing you can do once you get stronger is make a lot of beef jerky after you raid a lab and get a bunch of salt water. Jerky is easy to make and a good fall back food if you are stuck in your home due to rain and your cooked meat is spoiled.

I recommend making another trip into town at night and trying to get a lighter and some jerrycans/carboys. If you get carboys with another liquid already in them (bleach or amonnia) you can dump it on the ground. I suggest you hit up some sport goods stores (wood axe, wood saw, hammer, lighter, pot/frying pan, bow), clothing store (backpacks, trench coat, cargo pants, army pants, messenger bag, purse, military rucksack), gas station (jerry cans), and a library (all the books you can carry). Once you get all of that you can effectively stay out in the wild and level up your skills as long as you want.

Another way you can get an unlimited ranged weapon is by just making wooden spears and leveling your throwing. You can level your throwing by just tossing spears at a wall and while out getting delicious squrrel meat.

Lastly, if you don’t like skill rust you can turn it off in the options menu (press ?). Some people might consider this cheating in a sense but I don’t like playing with skill rust.

Hello, since this is my first post here, I’d like to thank the developers for creating such a great and addictive game. Just stumbled upon it and played my first succesful character during the weekend.

I would like to know where exaclty a hatchet can be found. It can be used for almost every simple crafting because it cuts AND can be used as a hammer and on top of that you can also chop trees/wood with it. Therefore I’d like getting my hands on one again… I miss the one of my old character.

Whoa dat text.

Regardless, you can usually find hatchets in hardware stores, but also rarely in sporting goods stores. They can’t chop down trees though, you’ll still need a wood axe or chainsaw for that.

Thank you. Should it be possible to chop down trees with it? It would take a long time but it isn’t impossible, I think. Would make the hatchet pretty over powered maybe.
