Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Bah had to be NPC’s didn’t it :p, much appreciated

Heres a hint, they tell you if they know one when you meet them.

Is the robust genetics trait even working properly?
Whenever I chuck a mutagen, I get ‘bad’ mutations 3 out of 4 times.

Also, you can still wear (leather) gloves with tentacle arms.

I recently got to level 9 cooking and don’t think I have gained a new recipe since level 6 or 7. I read on the wiki that you can cook mutagen at level 8 but don’t have the option to do it. Is there any more recipes Im going to unlock or do I have everything I can make with cooking so far?

Yeah, I’ve got a book titled “How To Stay Alive In The Woods” IRL that has drawings and walkthroughs for making shelters. (Sticks and evergreen branches, mostly, though there’s snow-building guidance. Can make a tent from skins, and it’s not like the wolves & bears are in short supply, either. Want me to dig it out?) One should be able to build a roof over one’s head w/o needing nails.

Unless they fixed NPCs and their inability to have fine location data* in one of the new versions, if you want martial arts you may as well spot yourself the three points and take Martial Arts Training. Taekwondo seems to work OK but I’ve ground it up to 6 and never swept anyone. (Sweeps theoretically become available at level 5, according to the previous wiki.)

*DEBUG: Static NPC with no fine location data! Teleporting it off to goodness knows where!

I’m still using the 02 Feb version and (after a mad Cooking spree: 5 Royal Jellies, 2 Cracks, 2 Fruit Pies, 4 Teas, a Bread, some Cooked Meat and about 10 Clean Waters) ground up to 8 Cooking from 7. Dunno what happened to Siferous but Mutagen lit right up–though it’s apparently high enough level that failures actually happen. (IME, recipes below 3-4 virtually never fail; 5-6 failed rarely, and 8 seemed to fail more often than it succeeded. All references are at their corresponding skill level or one point above.) Hoping someone didn’t disable Mutagen-making as that & Purifier are the biggest reason to take high-level Cooking. (All the food, & royal jelly, come through at 5-6. Anything higher is drugs.)

I think my problem is that my first aid isn’t even level 1 yet. What is your first aid at KA101? Also, is first aid just leveled through healing yourself or can you level it by crafting bandages?

This is a stupid question but, how can I craft a long bow?

Well normal tents wouldn’t be that hard to craft, but these are acid proof tents. So it would probably take more exotic materials than just animal pelts even if you could make them.

@Camd1: To make a Longbow you have to have Survival skill and Archery skill. I think both need to be lvl 2 but not entirely sure >.<

Animal pelts? How about mutant animal pelts? :stuck_out_tongue:

That said guys I’ve got a newb question here: Static spawn on or off.
I seem to get zerged either way, although I’ve found a promising settlement this generation.

If I have it off can I clear out a town and keep it clear, or will they just keep coming? I just don’t want to have to deal with brutes and such when I have nothing but my trusty crowbar with me.

Actually I just found a motorbike. Will I get horribly mangled if I attempt to run zeds over with it?
Edit – and on the mention of vehicles, how do I go about adding mods to it-- and some parts of the bike itself are in different colours-- namely the back wheel is green, the front is pink. does that signify damage, or?

@Iosyn:

  • I can’t comment too much on static spawns, as I’m not using it until special spawns are tweaked. But AFAIK once you clear a section of town it’ll remain (mostly) cleared

  • At speeds over 30 you might damage normal zombies a bit, but probably won’t kill them. Against more robust ones you’ll do barely anything. I think the game takes the weight of your vehicle and its current speed to calculate the damage done. Just have in mind that every time you get close to a zombi they get a chance of hitting you. If I were you I’d use it just to either escape or quickly map a town or area you haven’t explored yet during daytime, while avoiding zombies.

  • Colors do indeed mean damage. Dark green is undamaged. Green, lightly damaged, light green damaged, etc. Red is heavily damaged and grey means that part needs to be replaced. You can repair each part with a loaded welder, a wrench and some mechanics skill. The skill needed depends on the part you want to repair (just 3 for frames but 6(?) for wheels and engines).

My First Aid is 3 & change; the Big Book of First Aid (Milsurplus, Sporting Goods, & Libraries) goes 0 through 3. Haven’t tried crafting bandages as they’re extremely common in vivisection labs. (The ones with the 7s in them. Check the counters.) Hadn’t realized First Aid was a secondary for Mutagen, but it makes sense. IIRC you only need one point in the secondary to get the recipe to show; crafting it is another story, though.

how can i get rags, besides finding them. Can i “disassemble clothes?”

You can cut clothes and other object made of fabric with either scissors or some kind of knife, which will give you rags (although I think scissors give the best result -more rags-).

Yeah, you can also use scissors on rope and string, which is kinda useful for crafting if you’re short on supplies (mm, those steel spears and pipe-bombs.)

Okay guys, where in the name of all that’s unholy can I find:
A) Springs
B) Rubber hose.

I know I can get springs from lawnmowers but is there anything else? I usually only find two lawnmowers in a hardware store if I’m lucky and as for a rubber hose I’m completely lost. Maybe cutting up rubber gloves?

Rubber hose: in hardware stores and metal wreckages (crashed helicopter… at least that is what I think it is, look for a big patch of metal in the open). Maybe also in sporting goods stores?
You can also find springs in the wreckage as well as in the crater areas ( ’ O ’ on the map).

Rubber hoses are fairly rare though. You could try the safe room in banks; there’s all kinds of crap from sneakers to minireactors in there (either hack the console or use a jackhammer/high explosives/vehicle to get through the wall).

Can’t you get a rubber hose also by decomposing a crossbow?

*Imagines driving his newfound quadbike into a bank vault door.
Somehow I don’t think that’s gonna work lol. I found a semi-truck trailer (without the truck part, unfortunately) so maybe there’s a truck nearby.

Thanks, I best look harder then lol. Shouldn’t be too hard to fabricate an electrohack and there are some corpses nearby with C4 I think but god knows I won’t find a jackhammer until they implement construction sites.

…Also from a crossbow huh? I’ll have to try, god knows there are plenty of crossbow traps around.

Jack(jaques)hammers: hardware stores as well. Again, needs a bit of luck - but you’ll ever only need one.
And the semi-truck you’ve mentioned is well capable of driving into a few walls and survive. Armor it with a bit of plating and you’re good to go to run over a couple of buildings. BUT FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT, KIDS!
And as kenoxite mentioned it, the crafting recipe for crossbows includes rubber hoses - so, yeah, you could get some from disassembling crossbows.

Yeah, I’ve already been thrown off a quadbike by plowing into a wall. Flew about 6 tiles going 20-30mph.
Then I remember quadbikes have no seatbelts  thankfully the quad was reasonably intact.

Also sorry, should have mentioned-- it’s the trailer part, not the truck itself. If I can find a semi and some way to attach it BING mobile base. I’ve found a flatbed truck before, but no semis yet.

Makes me wonder if fuel trucks are in yet. open fuel valve, turn the radio on, drive into town and run for it. drop lighter into gasoline trail, BOOM. Would make static spawns fun as hell.

Also lets hope I can disassemble some of these crossbow trap crossbows, I need a water purifier soon. All this sewage and toilet water can’t be good for my health.
