Isn’t AKM the “modernized” version with the folding stock?
Nah, AKM is the one everyone thinks of when they say AK-47, differences include a better muzzle brake and lighter parts.

The description for Hooves could do with an update.
Gives a kick attack, provides natural armor and removes the need to wear shoes.
“Oh, well I guess I don’t need to worry about shoes anymore. Wait, why does this give me 4 starting points again?”

They look close enough to me, so not particularly stoked either way.

Hi, winter temps here. Want these warm wool socks and a fitted pair of combat boots?
oh, no, wait, you can’t wear them over your hooves.
Yeah, and that turns the description into even more of a misnomer.
I’m talking gameplay perspective here. It’s confusing for no good reason.
The AKM/AK-47 thing is mostly a nitpick really. I’d prefer it using AKM, mostly because it’s the same level of detail as the difference between an M4/M4A1 and because it’s one of my pet peeves to see erroneously named guns.
Basically one of them’s outdated and kinda bad, and the other one’s less outdated and deserves the reputation.
Also, about hooves: I’m reasonably sure that you’d need to get horseshoes and/or boots to deal with running on pavement and other hard surfaces, hooves just aren’t meant for that sort of thing.
Yea, sorry to burst your bubble about this, but if you show anyone in the US (and especially in New England, where this game is set), an AKM, they will tell you it’s an AK-47. that is it’s common name.
as we are playing survivors, who would be (mostly) ignorant of this fact, and many people who are playing this game are ignorant of this fact (as even I was, until i read that reply), using the commonly known name makes more sense than the technically accurate one.
anyone who reads “AK-47” in the game will know what is being referred to, even you. if you call it an AKM, most people would wonder if it’s something different.
It would be more appropriate for the game to name the gun based on your history. If you are playing a class that would know the distinction, such as a soldier, the game should call it what it actually is, with maybe a note explaining it for the ignorant players out there (like me) to avoid player confusion. probably this is a lot of work to set up, so my vote is to keep it recognizable by the masses.
In Poland, you would get weird looks for calling it AKM too. Everyone and his grandma know the AK-47.
Most games call it an AKM, even DayZ of all things. When you go out of your way to name things like HK416A5 instead of just the HK416, then it would be only logical you would name it the AKM. Just because a lot of people make the mistake of calling it the AK-47 doesn’t make it any less of a mistake.
Yeah, there’s a touch of detail disparity, M4A1’s but no M4s, I doubt the average person would know it’s an A1. I mean the general difference is a different fire mode and a slightly thicker handguard. Never even mind that there are two Mosin variants, one of which is literally just the base rifle but a bit shorter. I doubt people would be able to tell the difference, doesn’t mean it should be called Mosin-Nagant carbine ingame.
here in Greece too, even though most just call it Kalashnikov, whether its an AK-74, AKM, AK-47 or most of the other variations…
No need to add the other variations, but i’d prefer it to stay AK-47
Winter. Suddenly rain!
That shouldn’t happen.

I live in a more northern latitude than New England and it can happen.
I’m also in favour of changing the name to AKM. When I find a gun I’ve never heard of in cataclysm, I read the description of it. I don’t find it at all confusing and I’m the type of person who’d go through the apocalypse calling my guns “the rifle” and “the bigger rifle but sort of shorter in the front”. If everything else is named correctly, the AK should be as well, even if it goes beyond “AKM” to the point of naming it by whatever American company makes AK’s for sale in New England. (A quick google search tells me ‘Century Arms NPAP’, but I’m sure there’s people with more expertise who’d know what the most common model would be)
wouldn’t it be awesome if there was some ignorance effect on things?
If you played an ignorant character, the guns would be called things like “Pistol” and “rifle”, and you would not have the benefit of knowing what they are and what they do. no informative flavor text. There could be penalties for trying to use weapons you were unfamiliar with.
for instance, someone picks up a shiny desert eagle and hits themselves in the face the first time they fire it because they have no clue that the recoil on that sucker packs a punch.
^^^^ should be based on skill rather than a trait.
Not bad idea.

On a warm day, sure, but I’ve seen it hit at -10 °C. Doesn’t seem right at all.

The game is hard enough with every information available about the items you get, and we already have some obfuscation in artifacts. But i agree with bad effects and even good effects(i’m REALLY enjoying sword drawing against zombies now :D) depending of your skill, representing how much you know about USING that thing, wharever it is.
Cathedrals need church bells too, so I can ring them and attract zombies to siege my incredibly fortified cathedral.
