Inventory hotkeys like in old DDA?

I know there was a ‘Auto Inventory Letters’ Option in Option > Interfaces. I tried set it to ‘Enabled’ instead of ‘Favourite’ and restarted game, but there is still no letter assigned to my item.
What I am is expecting to see is like in more primitive versions of DDA, when I press (i)nventory, I can select item by pressing the key autoassigned to the item, instead of having to use directional keys to scroll.

It only assignes letter to wielded items (this also applies if set to Favorites; it will only assign a letter once the favorited item is wielded).

To my knowledge, there’s currently no way to automatically adding letters to any item that you pick up directly into your inventory.
You can still add them manually, but that’s a lot of work.
