How do I use rope on a long drop?

I tried activating the long rope from the top. I tried dropping it. I tried jumping. I tried everything. What the heck do I do?

If you have grappling hook, you’ll use it automatically as you descend.

I am assuming you have to craft this or does activating the hook give the option of attaching a rope to it?

You craft a grappling hook from a long rope and some scrap metal. You need a hammer and a survival textbook with the recipe.
