How come cockroaches ignore zombies? aren't they carrion creatures?

I do not recall that cockroaches reproduce in the literal sense of the word. pregnant cockroaches create an extra pair of nymphs after death, and they do not grow, eggs do not hatch and they do not lay. monsters that can really be killed for food all the time are triphids-the flesh is nutritious, non-toxic.

This is, at least for the current experimental & 0.F candidate (and quite a few versions back - including 0.E stable), incorrect. They grow up after 7 days, as the file and testing shows.
After 7 additional days, they also turn into pregnant giant cockroaches.

That’s also incorrect. They hatch once the egg item has “rotten away” (similar to (fertilized) bird eggs) based on the file (and I could verify that they spawn from eggs via testing).

And the third wrong statement…
Both the giant cockroaches and pregnant giant cockroaches “lay” (spawn in) eggs every 7 days, 1 single egg from the giant cockroach and 3 from the pregnant ones.

Thank you very much for your explanation

judging by the above figures, the cockroaches in the cataclysm not only increased in size, but also degraded.
cockroaches do not lay eggs in a straight line, the female creates an ootheca-a special container inside which all the offspring are located before hatching, it is also worth noting that the gestation of the entire osprey of 30-40 eggs lasts several weeks, and not 1 week, the cockroaches have become less fertile but grow faster.

Maybe whoever introduced the cockroaches into the game didn’t have a detailed knowledge about them? It’s also possible that the knowledge was there, but the behavior was chosen deliberately for a desired game play effect.

Introducing an egg package and get cockroaches to use it would probably require coding, while changing clutch size and egg laying frequency may be possible with only JSON file changes. Changing the egg maturation period might require a re-coding of how eggs hatch (as mentioned, they hatch when they become rotten, rather than going through a dedicated maturation process), unless it’s possible to specify how long it takes for eggs to rot on a per species basis.
The above should be possible to provide in a Pull Request (PR) for evaluation and possible discussion before being accepted into the project (or rejected, if deemed unsuitable). However, don’t expect anything to happen until 0.F has been released as a stable release, and possibly for a fair while after that (there’s stuff that’s been put on hold because of the pre release freeze that presumably needs to finally be processed, so there’s a backlog).

Even if the lowered fertility of cockroaches or bugs in general wasn’t intended it still makes sence. The bugs are a lot bigger and thus require more food, both to stay alive and to grow. Even if they don’t require as much food as mammal do to being cold blooded it still makes sence for their reproduction to be slowed down do to food resources. Think what would happen if the cockroaches reproduced at the rate they normally do. They would have eaten every scrap of food and plant matter in a town as well as all of the zombies after a year.

You can use the eggs to make powdered eggs…in case you are really desperate for protein. lol
