What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

Some odd things be happening. One of my long time NPC companions died. Cause of death, somehow there was a corrosive zombie who got down to the lab portion of the underground base. Only found out he died since I got that error message about NPC missions - and just when I freaking finished finding 100 normal zombies, too.

That’s not the odd thing. I passed by the original lab entrance (the underground base has an entrance my survivor made), and noticed that there’s a dissector room filled with fresh tainted meat. It’s an ice lab, but that room is on ground level, so the temperature is not cold at all. It’s autumn and the meat is still fresh, I found it during the summer.

Hm. Survivor wetsuit has enough acid protection to the legs, and combined with the wetsuit boots can completely negate acid damage from corrosives. Less defense than survivor trenchcoat and the double layer of survivor cargo pants. Could be a nice change, in any case.

Upon testing it, two layers of turnout pants and a pair of boots, completely negates acid damage. Butchered a corrosive zombie on the spot where it died; kept getting interruptions that my survivor was getting hurt, but I kept butchering the body and when it was finished there was no damage or pain.

That said, I’m using the less encumbering survivor wetsuit and survivor wetsuit boots, which offer far less encumberance, though not as much protection as a standard survivor suit, or a survivor cargo pants + survivor trenchcoat.

Day 1, spring. This is for my gods of the cataclysm speedrun. Chose a scoundrel, even with somewhat below 10 stats he’s able to kill the starting NPC for some handy gear thanks to the switchblade. On the other hand, he’s no psycho, so he’s moping about for the first day.

Before the night ends a somewhat daring raid on the town has net him a shopping cart, several canned food, drinks, tons of books - including the modern swordsman and a walking cane to start off his path to fencing. Cooking tools as well, some acetylene torches but no Under the Hood yet.

Day 2 now and he’s off to transport his raid goods to a sewage treatment plant which will be his base of operations for now.

Huh. With the new repair system, I no longer need to find Under the Hood as I can blunder my way into destroying useless items by “repairing” them with the soldering iron to get mechanics up quickly.

Well…looks like I’m gonna need to prepare a bit better before I can take on the dracolich.

Luck continues. Found security van with guns and ammo. Tempted to drive it as it’s got a lot of fuel and battery, not to mention being in near-perfect condition, but it’s in the middle of town so I can’t. Need to find welding goggles in order to use the torches to get a cargo carrier wheelbarrow going, and maybe a truck as I need to hurry.

I want to clear the challenges and milestones for gods of the cataclysm before day 40, at the very least. If I can do it in less time the better.

Well, I recruited the NPC and she has a submachinegun.

Should I sic her on the dracolich?

EDIT: Oh, wait. Staaaaiiirs. And I don’t have z-levels on. Fuck.

I have mostly cleared out 4 floors of coldlab. its beeny summer project.

I have over a dozen skitterbot corpses and a few dozen manhacks. I stopped opening most crates and theres a bug where tryimg to acetylene my way through an underground door affects the surface tile instead. which means that I can torch surface doors and bars, bur not subsurface ones. annoyed.

Ive got scales now, but not really closer to ascention yet. Some killer bionics I guess, for labs. faraday, tgermal dissipation, all the furnaces and ways to power them, weather, time, etc. Even magnets and flamethrower
nothing military grade, oc, but plenty of them. A distinct lack of mutagen though. Ive got some cattle juice and purifier left, and so much chems I dont think Ill ever get throughthem all.

I have noticed the lab tapers off the deeper you go, creating a rough inverted cone.

Im getting so encumbered Ive stopped bringing my melee weapons and started brimg a grappling hook and sling and handgun

Is that’s what’s happening when I try to burn through those bunker doors? I was thinking it was just uncuttable this whole time. Can you produce a save where this can reproduced easily (ie: standing outside a bunker door, acetelyne torch in hand) so we can post an issue on github and possibly have someone FIX this bug? The great thing about cataclysm is we don’t have to live with this stuff if we report it properly.

The first season since the cusp of the apocalypse has nearly ended. Yona Iche, once a meager janitor, has now staked out a means to her survival, by book and fist. She has met with a few survivors scratching by since then, a few unpleasant ones who believe only one thing “It’s kill or be killed.” Others, however, have been more pleasant, have hopes for a world like used to exist before ours were shattered. Many of them have fallen to the horrors that command the earth today, and the ones who are alive do not trust her very well, but she has something that they don’t: Food, an uncanny sense of tactics, and a truly uncanny grasp of skill. She also isn’t the kind to lie, but straight truth-telling isn’t what makes someone untrustworthy in times like these.

I kind of like to imagine that the bone helmet looks something sorta like this:

Day 4 of my speedrun challenge. Found welding goggles! Found a total of three acetylene torches on previous raids. Chopped off a cargo carrier from a pickup truck, and now it’s time to train mechanics up to four so I can repair wheels. After that, it’ll probably be a nomadic lifestyle as I get the stuff I need to do five challenges and two milestones.

Decided to jump onto one of the newest experimentals. Been a long time since I’ve played, too. Decided to roll up a medieval peasant character and try roughing it out in the wilds with hordes on. Going really well so far, though the “hordes” are a little lackluster. Unless I’m just unusually lucky that they’ve been just dribbling in. I’ve set up shelter in the entrance of a cave getting a little camp set up with a charcoal kiln, a smoking rack, and just recently a stone fireplace. Got a pickaxe that was just lying around in the middle of a field(wow that luck) and a few other assorted items from hostile NPCs early on. I even snagged a tokarev TT-30 off a random zed, but my stone javelins and knife spear are doing amazingly(OP) that it wont be necessary for home defense.

Struggling to find a way to get my mechanics up to install some wooden wheels to my cart that I’ve been dragging around like a lunk. I’m pretty sure but does the inside of the cave mouth, not going down the ‘stairs’, count as indoors? Already built some wattle-and-daub walls at the entrance getting a doorway situated. I’m a doing a little bit of city scavenging, but there should be a wattle-and-daub door frame for those who completely stick to the sticks and don’t have access to nails.

19 days in on 91 day seasons. Food has been a little bit of an issue, but living next to a river and surrounded by forests and swamps have kept me from starving.

Fastest way to increase mechanics now if find lots of batteries, and a soldering iron, to do some repairs on random junk. The new repair system makes it relatively quick to increase mechanics skills even if you’re damaging stuff all the time.

Got mechanics up to 4 now, and it’s time to leave the evac shelter with all the goods I’ve grabbed since a decent amount of zombies are lurking quite near the area.

First things first, managed to run across some security vans which held a handgun and plenty of ammo. It also had silver bars and diamonds, goods I intend to trade away to NPCs who spawned in the evac shelter’s basement. I’m getting their stuff, and getting two free skill level ups in the process.

Ooh. NPCs got skills. May have to stink up the basement for a while in order to learn as much as I can from them. It’ll take a while, but learning some key skills for my survivor.

After that… I’ll let them join me in my travels. The evac shelter will be surrounded by zombies, so it would be wise if I let them become meat shields while my survivor legs it with his loot to who knows where.

This is odd, NPCs keep popping up in the basement, and I already lowered it by half when the second survivor showed up.

First one died because a firefighter zombie appeared. Lucky, that. He was the flamethrower wielding one I had ordered him not to use weapons at all. Now’s I got a flamethrower of my own. The new survivor is wielding a katana; might have him get an “unfortunate accident with a horde” when I leave this shelter for good.

cant you give them guns, order them to use those guns, then trade for their melee?

Not sure. Debug tested and gave an NPC a Saiga, and the NPC just dropped it.

After restarting the game, I took the NPCs mission; kill zombie mom. Went into the house, and joy of joys, a toolbox and a freaking go bag.

So I need to learn skills from NPC 2 and 3. NPC 1 died from a zombie who spawned in the basement and left their simple flamethrower. My survivor’s got all the tools for survival, in any case, and it’s just day 7. Need to speed up learning as I want to start doing the gods of the cataclysm challenge before day 15.

Day 6, spring.

The day earlier, I wandered along the road which stretched from the warehouse west. As I expected, I reached the northern part of the town. Without having to go past the cathedral  I looted a house (food and Under the Hood), went south, spotted a liquor store. I was going to just walk past it, but the moonlight revealed the batteries on a shelf just inside the window. I went in, picked up all the stuff, went sweet! upon seeing ALL the foods in the fridges to the side, and then spotted a shopping cart.

Cue putting all the perishables into the cart and then walking out. I tracked a path which may or may not be the shortest safe path from there to the southern part of the town. Went back to the shelter to sleep. Woke up, nommed the perishables, read the book, sorted out loot. Now it’s night again, time to go back!

Day 10 of spring. While reading up on some books, a small horde fell into the basement. NPC 2 had a nail bat and NPC 3 held a katana, so I left them to deal with the worse ones while I stayed far from the chaos and killed the weak ones. NPC 3 took a bad beating, but he’s alive… and he dropped his katana. Score! He’s bleeding and I don’t expect him to last the night… but he had already imparted me his cutting skills, so it’s all good.

I also wisely placed the wheelbarrow in the stair tiles, so the items placed there are safe even when the roof collapsed.

About three to four more days and my survivor would have learned everything he needs from NPC 2.

Both NPC 3’s legs are broken, due to fighting several acidic zombies.
